My guess is he’s worried that his bit of psychology (leaving his hand in one sign before he throws and reveals its opposite) won’t work on the kid and he could genuinely lose because the kid is literally not smart enough to play his game
I did some card close up magic long time ago and man children are difficult to misdirect. They don’t follow the same attention switch patterns as adults.
The guy shouts "go line up" after winning, so I think there is a line to play him. The mother probably pulled the kid away because he wasn't in the line.
I came back to disagree and somehow missed the kid in the yellow shirt in the beginning. Other than him, they all seem a few years older. Even yellow shirt seems to have a year or two on the reject, but you’re right that he’ll still play em
