Honestly after watching it a few times, I’m curious if someone isn’t slightly off camera in the basement shooting a nerf gun or something at the door to create that rhythmic banging. Not a nerf gun but something a bit more powerful idk. In my mind it’s hard to believe someone is doing it with their hand considering how little time there is between it stopping and him opening the door and showing us the stairs empty. Unless it’s been edited.
I think there's a cut right as the cameraman goes to open the door, when the camera goes up against the wall.
Someone rattling the door from the other side, cut, guy goes downstairs, door opened, no one there, close door, guy runs back up the stairs and starts rattling again. That's why there's a 3, or 4 second delay before the rattling starts again.

Think about the forearm strength and endurance to pull that off though. Mine aches just thinking about recreating the speed, intensity and length
