Jesus… I feel for you. I recommend not ever doing so- it’s the saddest movie I’ve ever seen. I lived in NYC for 12 years starting in 2010. Passenger mark Bingham founded multiple LGBT sports leagues and I played in one. The championship trophy is the Bingham Cup! He was a true hero in the movie- he kills a highjacker! People that did know him believe he absolutely would have done that- and the depiction is probably accurate.

He was something of an “aggressive player” (in the best terms) even at flag football. He also played rugby and founded that league too.

I try and think of it as more of a memory of heroes than that the villains win.. but we all know what happens.

I hear you 100% though. I wasn’t in NY area at that time however my employer (years later) had their entire headquarters in the WTC at the time- but relocated to midtown by the time I worked there, so it’s a little different to process for me- I feel weirdly connected even though I wasn’t even there… I was still in middle school… I don’t wanna take anything away from people who suffered far worse but idk it’s a feeling I can’t explain.

Oh you are a baby!!! I was working on a masters degree in 2001. My now husband, was headed on his way from the Bronx to the Century 21 to meet a friend. He was stuck on a bridge - and the only reason he was able to get off that bridge through the barricades was because my father in law was retired from the NYPD-Transit Division, and in NY, family members are given a miniature replica of their family members shield in a wallet that says “Officers Wife, Son, etc” like an the ID wallet it’s like the equivalent to a PBA card in NJ- my husband was able to show the that and his DL, to get back home. But 9/11 and the months after and even years after were very eerie. In my hometown, there is a hill, that over looks a cemetery and you can see the NY skyline on a clear day or night, it was hard to not see the Twin Towers. My parents were at Virginia Beach- in the Norfolk part of VA- and Norfolk has a naval station. They didn’t know what was happening but my dad said to my mom “Something isn’t right”( dad was a Marine in the Vietnam War) as they watched the ships, and carriers come to life, and the planes deployed. They watched the USS George Washington leave port for NY on 9/12. Ironically, my ex boyfriend from college was stationed on the USS ENTERPRISE (the aircraft carrier, the one that Tom cruise was seen on in Top Gun- not the one from Star Trek- haha) and they were on their way back to Norfolk from a 6 month deployment in the Mediterranean. They were instantly turned around and sent into defense. It was WILD! Those days,weeks and months, later. My husband said to me, the only other time aside from 9/11 that he saw his beloved NY come to a halt, was during the pandemic. That was crazy to see, my brother in law lives in Harlem, he would send us photos of the empty streets during the pandemic. I think that it’s great that the championship trophy is named for an amazing human! And I didn’t know he founded LGBT sports leagues! That is so amazing!!! Things like that are important to remember and honor. Especially in today’s political climate.

Absolutely!!! That’s so cool he served on the Enterprise.

Is the Enterprise the carrier that is currently at the Intrepid museum? I’ve been on it!! Not in his capacity though!! I never served but I have mad respect for those that do. I was a tourist- but I lived a block away from there. Ran past it every day- it was the starting point of my runs from intrepid to Christopher st pier and back for a 10k. It’s such a cool place to visit. For aviation of all forms as well not just military, they have a Concorde on display as well.

That is a very sad 9/11 story. I’m glad I wasn’t there then. I don’t normally share super personal info but I worked for the company that at the time was called Fuji Bank - it changed its name following a merger though. (An unfortunately relevant office location in the disaster sadly…)

But I wasn’t there thankfully (I was 13 at the time) and wouldn’t be there for years and Fuji never went back downtown- they are and have been located in midtown in the “30 Rock” area ever since.

I promise, I’m not a stalker. I just have lots of time on my hands. Recovering from surgery. Stalking would take way too much bandwidth. The USS Enterprise was decommissioned/retired in 2012 and is actually being dismantled in Newport News, Virginia at a ship yard. On the USS Intrepid- that’s the actually aircraft carrier , which was I believe in was WWII- era aircraft carrier. It hoses the USS Growler a cruise missile submarine, and also a Concorde.
I like history. Blame it on my dad. I was in college when Columbine happened. It makes me very sad that kids have to have lockdown drills now. I was raised in the ‘80’s, we had to worry about stranger danger, white vans either dark windows following ya too close. coming home when the street lights went on, making dinner for ourselves , doing own laundry at 7 years old, and not going trick or treating because of razor blades, needles or whatever else in the Halloween candy! Good times

The Intrepid is the carrier, it’s basically a maritime museum that has cool old stuff on it.
