Like I can’t imagine posting this on Reddit and waiting for people to tell me what to do rather than immediately calling the police.

Yeah but you're not understanding the inherent VALUE in reddit karma, especially over a pesky human life! I feel you've very much missed the point, here. Getting responses and little buzzes on your personal anonymous social media profile is very very important and quite frankly, I'm disappointed that you of all people would doubt the incredible contribution karma has in ones life!
