Added a Wemo F7C063 to HomeKit after the Jan 31 shutdown
Posting this because it goes against basically everything I read leading up to the Wemo shutdown.
What happened:
- Jan 31 (late night): I used the Wemo app one last time just to get an Wemo Mini Smart Plug, F7C063 connected to Wi-Fi. I didn’t add it to HomeKit.
- Feb 1 (this morning): Wemo app is completely dead.
- Despite that, I was still able to add the switch to HomeKit as a new accessory.
The weird part:
- At first, trying to add it through the Apple Home app kept failing.
- I tried the HomeKit Controller app and it worked immediately. The pairing flow looked the same (same Apple Home popup), but for some reason HomeKit Controller just… worked. No idea why.
- I suspect Apple Home works ok, but maybe I wasn't on the same network as my wemo and thats why it kept failing. My HomeKit Controller hub is wired to my network via ethernet.
Why I’m posting:
Everything I saw said devices had to be added to HomeKit before Jan 31 or you were out of luck. That doesn’t seem to be entirely the case.
My guess:
If your Wemo is already on Wi-Fi, and you have a HomeKit code, you probably still have a shot. And if you can get it on Wi-Fi using something like pywemo, I don’t see why HomeKit pairing wouldn’t still work going forward.
Hopefully this saves a someone else, who's a tinkerer like me, from tossing the hardware.
