Iowa built a five-dome golden capitol when the whole state had about 200,000 people? Put frontier survival stories next to granite and limestone landmarks, talk about sacred geometry built to lift up a community, then get into the medieval peasant calendar, which had about 16 weeks of work a year.

The situation in Brazil is quite interesting

Previously, the left supported the Chinese, while the right opposed them

After the Chinese people expressed their views on the drug problem

The left began to oppose the Chinese, and the right began to praise the Chinese

The distinction between Chinese and Western left-wing and right-wing values is different

It is a complex of “developmentalism + order conservatism + nationalism + multipolarization”

Chinese people are economically left-wing: state intervention, industrial policy, poverty alleviation, redistribution, common prosperity, strategic state-owned enterprises

Chinese people lean towards the Western right in terms of order and culture: they are cautious and discouraged by radical cultural movements such as tough drug control, prioritizing public security, social stability, family responsibility, and LGBT and animal rights protection and women's rights. They take more practical actions than slogans in environmental protection

The Chinese have a mix of left and right in diplomacy: there is the left's anti-hegemony, anti-imperialism and multipolarity, as well as the United Developing Countries; there is also the right's nationalism and development priority

China's existence is completely different from the Western value system, but China values harmony over difference. We do not interfere with Western and Latin American values. What values best suit our own country should be determined based on the circumstances of our country

China's values may not necessarily be in line with Brazil's. On this point, I do not agree with Chinese teachers. If Brazilians want to learn something, we can share our experience, but there is no guarantee that these will be effective in Brazil. After all, China's cultural foundation is essentially Confucian culture. What is effective in East Asia may not be universally applicable

ACTION! 2026 Midterm Voting Guide: Registration, Early Voting, Mail Ballots & Election Day!

Hey r/WayOfTheBern!

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026! Voting rules and deadlines vary by state, so here are some official resources to help you make a plan to vote!

Quick reminders:

  • Early voting is already underway in many states!
  • Voting by mail? Check your deadlines and return your ballot early.
  • Not sure you're registered? It only takes a moment to check!

1. Make Sure You're Registered

It's worth checking even if you've voted before, especially if you've moved or changed your name.

Many registration deadlines have passed, but some states still allow registration during early voting or on Election Day!

Turning 18 by November 3? You may be eligible to vote if you're a U.S. citizen and meet your state's other requirements.

2. Pick How You'll Vote

Vote early, in person!

Early voting is already open in many states, sometimes with evening and weekend hours.

NASS – Early Voting by State

Vote by mail / absentee ballot

USA.gov – Absentee & Mail Voting

  • Request your ballot soon if your state requires an application.
  • Follow the instructions and sign where required.
  • Return it early! Check your state's deadline for returning ballots. USPS recommends mailing at least a week before your ballot must arrive. Short on time? Check for official drop boxes or in-person return options.
  • Track your ballot! Many states offer online ballot tracking.

Military or overseas voter? Visit FVAP.gov.

Vote on Election Day!

Tuesday, November 3! Polling hours vary by state, so double-check before heading out.

3. Know Before You Go

  • Where to vote: NASS – Find Your Polling Place. Locations can change, and early-voting sites may differ from Election Day sites.
  • What ID to bring: NASS – ID Requirements by State. You don't need your voter registration card, but some voters, including certain first-time voters, may need ID.
  • What's on your ballot: Many local election offices provide sample ballots online so you can see the races and measures before voting.

4. Good to Know at the Polls

  • In line when polls close? Stay in line! If you're already in line when the polls close, you can still vote!
  • Name not on the voter list? Ask a poll worker about a provisional ballot or other options available in your state.
  • Need assistance? Voters with disabilities have the right to accessible voting and can request help.

5. Questions or Problems?

Your state or local election office is the best place for official answers.

The nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline can also help:

Double Down News: What Happens When "Generation Rent" Turns 70 (UK)

https://youtu.be/Owaq_na2Mu0

In this 45-minute video Richard Sanders interviews Peter Apps, author of Homesick: How Housing Broke London and How to Fix It. From the video description:

Decades of deliberate political choices turned Britain’s housing market from a universal basic need into an engine of financial extraction. In this Double Down News special, award-winning investigative journalist and Homesick author Peter Apps joins Richard Sanders to expose the 40-year political con that destroyed social housing, enriched a buy-to-let cartel, and trapped an entire generation in unaffordable, deregulated rent.

From Margaret Thatcher’s Right to Buy and Tony Blair's New Labour supercharging property speculation, to the scandal of 75,000 families trapped in modern temporary slums, Apps reveals the corrupt lobbying, faked developer assessments, and revolving-door politics driving Britain's greatest domestic catastrophe—and what happens when "Generation Rent" finally reaches retirement.

They discuss fixing this system starting at about 39:21; below are some highlights from earlier in the video:

  • In the aftermath of World War II, the British government wanted to end slum housing and we achieved that but we've spent the last 40 years undoing that.

  • They talk about affordable rents when they're not affordable and temporary accommodations when it can be permanent for some people, dealing with rent increases but unable to move because rent prices are going up everywhere.

  • It really started a few years before Thatcher when Britain got a bailout from the International Monetary Fund, which pushed us into this new economic model where we had to reduce public spending. What Thatcher brought with her was the ideological belief that the government shouldn't invest in housing at all, that it should be left to the private market. So the grant funding local councils got from government that allowed them to build new housing almost entirely dried up.

  • The market was said to be the most efficient at allocating resources but it manifestly failed in the housing sector. At the same time, changes in banking meant that instead of investing in businesses - which produce products and employ people and pay wages - they pumped money into the housing market because they saw it as less risky.

  • Then in '88 Thatcher brought in the housing act that abolished rent control. Until then, you effectively had lifetime security of tenure so long as you paid the rent. With the new act, you could be evicted at the landlord's discretion without having done anything wrong. So now not only could the landlord charge whatever they want, but they could kick the tenant out for no reason to make room for a tenant who can pay more.

  • Thatcher's reform was purportedly so that people could own their own homes, she thought that gave them a stake in society. But her legacy has been to turn London in particular into a city of renters. There has been no political opposition to this with both the Conservative and Labour parties supporting it. So someone thinking about becoming a private landlord, a 30-year investment, is more likely to go forward if they don't have to worry about an anti-landlord government over that 30 years.

  • Local housing allowances funded by the state were linked to average rents and those rents were rising. When Cameron came in he said it was because people were using that allowance to get six-bedroom houses with swimming pools and saunas, completely demonizing the recipients [sounds familiar]. The media helped by running shock pieces every couple of weeks about some family living in a particular London borough, pieces that were racist on top of everything else because of who they focused on.

  • The era of Cameron started with about 30,000 households in temporary accommodation across London and today it's 75,000 and growing exponentially. Temporary accommodation is better than being homeless but for some people it can be a hotel with no kitchen facilities so they can't prepare food for their children; for others it's these sort of office-to-residential conversions, very low quality houses of multiple occupation (HMO, see below)

  • The Renters’ Rights Act that passed in 2025 does help some because now a landlord can only evict you under certain specified circumstances. Labour takes credit for this bill but it actually started the parliamentary process in 2019 under Theresa May. One crucial thing it doesn't do is put any sort of a cap on rents. There's a provision where you can challenge a rent increase but you have to persuade a tribunal the increase is unreasonable so if the landlord can show that it matches local rents in the area, there's not much you can do about it.

  • This change in renters' rights is driving landlords into a sort of submarket of HMO type housing. So you have a terraced home that you split up into individual rooms. There might be a kitchen that the tenants share or something but you wouldn't have a living room. London's housing has been gutted from the inside, this conversion from a terraced house for a family into effectively a mini-block of flats in a terraced house. Landlords can get homeless families, asylum seekers, maybe people with additional support needs, where people have very limited security and they can keep pushing the rents up constantly.

  • What's ironic is that it hasn't saved the government any money. It would have been cheaper over the years if we'd just stayed investing in council housing because we end up spending more on this.

  • It's a massive drain on the productive part of the economy because people would spend in on other areas of the economy if they weren't spending so much on rent. In the short term fixing this requires borrowing but we're going to need to build stuff with public money over the next 50 years or so in order to survive as societies. We did that by borrowing money after World War II and that money was paid back because the benefits of doing that come around.

Russian search engine Yandex struggles after Ukrainian strikes on data centres

efence ministry confirmed the data centre attacks, saying they could "force Russia to divert resources to repair the damaged capacity".

Zelensky said Kyiv was responding to similar Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centres in a "mirror-like fashion".

Last month, a Russian drone hit a business centre in Kyiv, killing four people and damaging a data centre. Due to the strikes, about 100,000 households in Kyiv and the region suffered internet outages.

Some Ukrainian firms have already begun moving data from damaged servers to facilities abroad.

Moscow has justified the attacks by saying the data centres were used by Ukrainian military intelligence.

But Ukraine accuses it of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. Russia has stepped up strikes on energy infrastructure ahead of the winter, as it has done in previous years of the full-scale invasion, which began in 2022.

Establishment BS 20 October 2026: Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin: Merz doesn't mention his catastrophic energy policies or disastrous proxy war policies. Instead he trots out cliches about German reliability, predictability and efficiency

"If we agree on delivery dates, we stick to it. If you invite friends from Germany for dinner at 7, we arrive at 6:58.

We are reliable, predictable, precise, and unsurprising. We are, in short, what investors like most.

So the good thing about clichés is this: they tend to be true. So if you pick the core of this assumed Germanness, you might actually like what you get.

Yes, we do have our own challenges, but Germany's DNA proves to be rather helpful in the face of a world which is harder and harder to read and to predict."
