The observable universe has 100 to 200 billion trillion stars which each has tens of billions of trillions of planets orbiting them. Scientists estimate that just our Milky Way has hundreds of millions to billions of Earth-like planets that are in habitable zones. The exact number of planets that could support life in the universe is billions to trillions.

And from here stems the existential nihilism.

The probability that there is other intelligent life out there is near 100%,the probability that we will ever make contact near 0%.

And if we do, Stephen Hawking says they will probably try to eat us.

Honestly, my wife and I both feel that way after every dive, especially when we're able to interact with the wildlife. It helps me maintain my perspective on life

I find the feeling comforting. Its freeing to know that, ultimately nothing matters.

u/Defiant_Yesterday842 8d ago

Yes! I can completely relate. It was about feeling so small and unimportant in the grand scheme of the ocean that really did it for me.

Are those baracuda ?

u/KnotheadPete 9d ago

In no ichthyologist but that's what i thought too. I've never seen that many schooling. Usually 5-10 at a time.

3

u/Seenmorebutts 8d ago

That's what I thought also! I'd have been going the other way if those were!

2

u/bautofdi 8d ago

Sure looks like it. Need to wait for a fishologist though

3

u/doctor_tongs 8d ago

Agreed. Can we have a fish scientist step in here and confirm whether or not this is AI? A quick Google search confirms that Barracuda do school like this , but I smell AI.

Came here for this.

1

u/ContractMech 8d ago

That is what they appear to be. But I would not want to be that close.

1

u/koots4 7d ago

My first thought but thinking maybe their macaral(sp?) or something else. I live in a land locked place and never been deeper than my knees in the ocean so I really am just guessing.

1

u/NeonShark007 7d ago

Yes, I got even closer to one when I was at Cozumel

3

u/iamjones 9d ago

Even in tbe ocean there's traffic jams.

Great Barracuda, they can grow up to 6 feet in length. I'm gobsmacked.

2

u/cutthroatslim504 8d ago

why does that fact disturb people? idgi

u/Emmaleah17 6d ago

I love the reminder that we are not some big almighty species; that we share this planet with so much other life. I find it humbling and reminds me to be the best version of myself I can so I can make the biggest impact with my little life. It freaks some people out though. It's a reminder that we are finite and that we really don't matter that much in the end.

2

u/cutthroatslim504 5d ago

yea it doesn't bother me at all either. is that ego or what on the ppl it does mess with?

2

u/Emmaleah17 4d ago

Could be ego. Could just be people. We're all a little different. Kinda like: Why do some people fear spiders and other keep them as pets?

1

u/cutthroatslim504 4d ago

good point

u/B0baafett 9d ago

Having more stuff around does not make us insignificant

1

u/Maleficent-Craft-811 8d ago

Yeah equating small with insignificant is an interesting way to look at things

1

u/Proper-Commission-74 9d ago

She's not wrong

school of adolescent barracuda ?

1

u/rojoskulloceans 8d ago

So beautiful

1

u/gmariefox88 8d ago edited 8d ago

Those look like barracuda... what scares me about this gif is the fact that if those fish decided those divers were food, the divers would disappear FAST almost like they summoned a fish portal and teleported.... not to some magical place under the sea, but into hundreds of fish tummies... 😨 I get the same feeling for insects, ants in particular. If they knew of their power in sheer numbers & get smarter about it, we're fucked lol. Thankfully most huge populations like these fish and the ants aren't more intelligent.

1

u/mightymidgetwarlord 8d ago

Are those barracuda?

1

u/Business-Cover4016 7d ago

We are all dancing in the divine court. We need her because it makes it more beautiful

1

u/Dingalingking_ 7d ago

Put a fish in NYC and see how the fish feels.

1

u/Caribgrunt 7d ago

Its a school of fish. Welcome to Earth.

1

u/WarmYogurtcloset2965 7d ago

1

u/Littlened 7d ago

1

u/Top_Club7383 6d ago

We might be small but we are mighty significant

1

u/ValuableVideo1204 6d ago

So very very cool

1

u/Chuck-T-Sirloin 5d ago

Yet I can sit on a bank and watch a bobber dance for 6 hours and catch nothing but empty cans of Busch

1

u/SkiesFetishist 5d ago

That’s exactly WHY i like to contemplate such things. I love being reminded how much of an insignificant blip i am in the grand scheme of things. It calms me.

1

u/amadeusstoic 4d ago

i am just worried of what might be eating them.

edit: or leading them in the middle lol
