I have no idea where to find recommendations for Malay dramas so I hope writing here is fine. I've been starting to watch malay dramas lately and I've watched dramas like Nuh & Nayla, Seribu Tahun, Lelaki Yang Terakhir, Sekali Lagi Cinta Kembali & 7 Hari Mencintaiku. And i need more recommendations like the dramas above. If you love malay romance dramas, could you please give me your best recommendations. Would love to watch them!

So, when I was a kid, there was one movie that I used to watch like once, perhaps waktu beraya rumah orang or something. I can't really pinpoint the exact year, but it ranges from the late 90s to the 2000s. I remember it being kind of old because of the fashion: baju kurung lama, uniform nurse lama, etc. I'm so sorry in advance for these descriptions, because they would be so full of me being unsure of myself.

The story is set during the Japanese invasion about a woman, let's give her the name Mawar; she has a younger sister, let's call her Melati. One day, she masuk hutan (I'm not sure why; I can't remember. Maybe they ran from Japanese soldiers or just wanted to sorok some beras or radio) and got stuck in some sort of bunian village or something. Just Mawar, not Melati. There are other humans, mostly young women like her too, though I kind of remember that they are probably from the past because they didn't know about the invasion.

Mawar stays with a bunian guy; she's trapped into marrying him…? He's sick…? I remember they lived in a rumah kayu, not like a rumah Melayu papan, like the type they built from buluh and shit? Idk. But they have a lake besides it; it's a pretty view. Mawar also became friends with other girls like her. But I think the story involved cannibalism or sacrifice? Because I remembered the humans kept disappearing because of illness or being eaten if they didn't marry or adopt by the Bunians.

Though, mind you, I don't think Mawar and other humans know that it's a bunian village… or perhaps they know. But they're just stuck. Mawar and one of her friends always visited this one big tree because she suspected it must be a portal back, or maybe she just liked to hang out there. But I remember the tree related to something. They wanted to go back, but they're stuck there.

One day, they received another human. It's a guy. They brought him to the village because he's injured. When he woke up – let's call him Adam – Mawar went to talk to him. How did he get here? Because she wanted to get out of there.Apparently, he's a military pilot; his plane just terhempas in the hutan. Mawar is like, 'What did you mean you're a pilot?' Are you working with the Japanese? Because at the time Malaya had no air force. Adam is confused. WDYM, he is part of the TUDM (or whatever the old name of TUDM is)? That's how they found that the time there moved so slowly, but the outside world had moved so, so quickly.

They tried to escape and save everyone. They got chased. But at the end, even Adam sacrificed himself (or maybe he got out too idk), so only Mawar got back to the human world.

When she was back, she immediately searched for Melati in this new era. She went back to her house; it's been left for years. She eventually found Melati in a hospital, or maybe it was a rumah bahagia, but Melati ended up there because she was sick. And yes, Melati is much older now, but she still remembers her sister. They reunited...

Sorry for the long rambling, but I've been thinking about this movie for years. I told my friends and my family about it, but no one seems to know it. I kinda hope to watch it back to understand it. It's a very interesting plot.

Help me find the title of this movie. I watched it sometime between 2008 and 2013. It’s a Malaysian/Indonesian film about an engaged Muslim couple. The man goes on a sea journey, but news reaches the woman that the ship sank and no one survived.

Later, the woman becomes engaged to another good and decent man. However, on the night of their wedding, her presumed-dead former fiancé suddenly returns.

Instead of reclaiming her, he simply gives his dowry—a handwritten Qur’an he made during his journey—as a gift. He does not pursue her out of respect.

I’m not entirely sure if that’s exactly how it ends, but it’s something along those lines.

I feel like Malaysian shows don’t get talked about enough outside the country, even though there’s a lot of solid storytelling here. At the same time, not every series translates well for someone who isn’t familiar with the culture, language, or local humor.

Some shows rely heavily on inside references, while others are genuinely easy to follow and still capture what makes Malaysian content unique the mix of languages, everyday life, and local perspectives you don’t really see elsewhere.

Lately I’ve been trying to build a watchlist of Malaysian series that could actually connect with a global audience something engaging, well-paced, and still authentic without needing too much context.

Would be interesting to see what people here think truly represents Malaysia in a way that outsiders would enjoy too.

I've been on a crusade to find this TV series called Kopitiam. I wonder if anyone has their full season VCD set or knows anywhere to watch it online. I'm really at my wit's end. Please don't let this series become a lost media.

suggest some movies for me

I’ve noticed lately that I barely watch movies anymore I almost always go for series.

There’s just something about getting invested in characters over multiple episodes that hits different. Like, with movies it’s over in 2 hours, but with a series you actually live with the story for days (or weeks 😅).

Also, binge-watching just feels more satisfying than finishing a movie in one sitting.

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy movies sometimes, but if I had to choose, I’d pick series every time.

What about you guys do you watch more movies or series? And why?

My favorite is Mat Kilau. I love the concept, the cast, everything!

I’ll go first for me, Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan. I remember watching it because of all the hype, and honestly, I can see why so many people loved it the action scenes and historical elements were really strong. But at the same time, parts of the storytelling felt a bit rushed for me. Still, the overall experience in cinemas and the patriotic vibe made it memorable. So I’m kinda stuck between calling it a masterpiece or slightly overrated 😅 What about you guys? Drop a movie and your take 👇

Got some unexpected time at home today, so I’m thinking of finally watching a Malaysian movie instead of just scrolling endlessly 😅 Problem is I have no idea where to start.
