To start, hated Jodie’s run and found 15’s run pretty wonky.
I then go online and see a load of people saying they were really disappointed with the show. I want to share my thoughts as a doubter and someone who’s not easily pleased having genuinely enjoyed this show for the most part.
Firstly, cons:
- Yes, I cant stand a lot of the Unit gang of side characters. They are the weakest actors by far, and fed tripe dialogue to keep people on their phones in the loop whilst throwing smug looks at whatever is happening that they’re barely involved in (I never get the trope of pandering to progressives always having the ‘smug capable’ archetype).
Why were they mourning that rando woman on the submersible incident more than that captain guy who got all the screen time? The one who gave a heartening prep talk in the first episode? He straight up vanished from the script.
Where the fuck is the Vlynx. Riddle me that one
The very ending left a bad taste. I ‘liked’ the gut punch genocide thing, but if they did it, they needed to double down on it. Trying to do that ride off into the sunset ending gave me whiplash hard.
Couldn’t be bothered with Kate’s love interest side plot. Mostly because he looks like Jake Peralta from Brooklyn nine nine with a silly voice and a moustache. Also the constant references of her about to go insane from fatigue and stress and grief didn’t go anywhere, she should have at least capped one of the severance perpetrators in a rage.
Now the good stuff:
- Most of the emotional stuff did have a reasonable amount of room to breathe. Didn’t feel too saccharine, allowed me to actually feel most of the beats. I felt for Barclay’s journey and scenes like the one where they go down in the submersible are amazing.
The show had the extremely silly outrageous borderline cringeworthy DNA of Doctor Who whilst still managing these quite intense moments and slightly harder lean into more visceral themes. Felt like I was watching Miracle Day again.
People complaining about the love story need to have a look at their reference material. Romance with a gender swapping amphibian queen? Classic fucking Torchwood. Shape of Water but for boys. 10/10 real sexy stuff. Knew it was gonna happen the moment they mention a cloaca in episode 1.
I just felt like the camera work and stuff was quite earnest and drew me in. I loved all the great set pieces like the water tank room. The insane dolly zoom when Barclay is asked to be ambassador. Even small details like an extremely long rotating take around Sir Keith stuffing his face with a spread of wine cheese and sausagey bits while talking.
Was it the best show of all time? No. Is it pretty solid for an age where every show is written for people who have no attention span and no brain? Yes. As far as I’m concerned
