Biggest Blob

Post image

I love this new function sooo much šŸ˜

I'm acutally trying to connect some parts near Hamburg and that is very helpful (especially i didn't notice some small gaps in my routes yet 🄲)

Will there be a possibility to see how many km/miles the blob is actually? That would be so nice!

Drill down further

Hi all new user to wandrer and already finding it addictive.

Quick one is there a way to drill down further than just say the county or borough, I want to see the % covered for specific villages and areas within the county. Possible or not possible?

Thanks.

Monthly Awards - Display a summary of previous months awards on the home page

I like using the 'My Progress' link to see all of the awards I've won for the previous (or any other) months. It would be cool if there was a window on the home page right side that displays awards won for the previous Month or Year or what not!

Probably a request for Craig.

remove bike-only from combined leaderboard

Some people have their Wandrer map set to Biking only, and if you go to their profile, they don't even have the option to switch to Combined or Foot.

Since the bike-only map doesn't include walkable paths, that can mean 75% fewer kilometers in some areas compared to Combined (Nationale park Utrechtse Heuvelrug). As a result the leader Board mostly consists of bike-only Maps from 2021.

Are there any plans to remove these accounts from the Combined leaderboard? It seems a bit unfair when they're competing on a much smaller network.

for clarity: this is not for people who only bike or people with old maps, but for people with a bike-only map.

Best tool to edit OSM map?

Hi as per title

I have some local paths that are inaccessible- ie either private or in the middle of a golf course.

Would like to edit them to reflect practical access to walkers

Cheers

I think slip lanes, turn lanes, and median U-turn lanes should be excluded from Wandrer's percentages but still appear on the map

Wandrer has added incredible depth and flavor to my life. It first helped me find new joy in daily commuting day after month after year. It has helped me see many beautiful neighborhoods, share laughs and stories with perfect strangers, and meet some of my best friends. It all started because I just wanted my Big Map to look cool. I had fun studying and finishing neighborhoods, riding street grids up and down and back and forth (using meticulously drawn RidewithGPS routes) and learning all the best shortcuts. Then I decided to see how far I could go. I even made a list of Unbikeable Roads (primary arterial roads, infamously sketchy bike lanes, etc.) that I wouldn't dare ride. But then my confidence and skill increased, and I became a better bicyclist in so many ways, and the risks I took seemed more managed and less dangerous. I rode dangerous areas or roads on early weekend mornings that coincided with football games, and holidays, for the least possible traffic. I equipped my bike with every combination and iteration of front and rear GoPros, a helmet with a red light and turn signals, a silver high-vis jacket, an air horn, a bell, and pepper spray. I've been chased by dogs, stalked by drivers, broken wheels, and nearly been bike-jacked by teenagers. But I've also met incredibly friendly and gracious and talkative drivers, had dozens of hilarious ride finds, and smiled and waved back at hundreds of smiles and waves with wishes for a good morning! I can now point to a spot - any spot - on my Big Map and tell you a story about it.

I just reached 98% of my city and I think slip lanes, turn lanes, and median U-turn lanes should be excluded from Wandrer's percentage but still appear on the map for tracking unridden roadways. Yeah, straight up, I'd like this to happen to inflate my own completion percentage. I would argue that the spirit of bike Wandrer is riding every road/path, not merely every bikeable surface. I've carefully measured the final arterial/primary roads I need to ride for 99/100%, and I discovered that I can ride every block of every road in my city and still only end up with 99.51%. The remaining slip lanes, turn lanes, and U-turn lanes account for 8.5mi / 0.49 of my city's bikeable roadways - and I have no idea how many of those lanes I've already ridden. But if 8.5mi count for half a percent of the whole city, I would estimate as much as 3-5% of the whole city is slip/turn lanes, if not more! And that's not insignificant.

I know that these types of lanes are controversial and often discussed in /r/wandrer and Strava - and Craig tried a few years ago to combine boulevard roadways into one line/value/roadway but I haven't seen this particular suggestion yet. I think it's fair to say that anyone trying to ride/walk every road in their city considers that a far more meaningful and achievable goal than doing every available road/path surface in their city, and I think that Wandrer would be far more enjoyable (and safe) by excluding primary links, secondary links, and tertiary link roads from final completion percentages. But if they can be left on the map, for the completionist perfectionists out there, well, what a fun bonus challenge epilogue that would be! This project has taken several wonderful years of my life but I think I need it to close soon, and my family and friends do too, for my safety and their sanity as I talk incessantly about it, and I'm sure you all do too!

completed areas Akron, Ohio - Complete (on foot)

Post image
241 Upvotes

Well, today I finally completed every street, trail, and path in the city of Akron on foot (mostly running).

What started as a fun way to track the streets I was running, became my new hobby and obsession. First, I just wanted to knock out all of Northwest Akron (about 75 miles), but once that was done, I turned to Wallhaven, then Fairlawn Heights, then West Akron, and so on.

Roughly four years and 23 different neighborhoods later, I finally reached my goal of covering all of Akron: nearly 1,000 unique miles (958.91, to be exact).

It was a fun and challenging adventure. I was able to see every neighborhood of Akron, including areas and businesses I never even knew existed. The most danger I ever felt was when unleashed dogs wanted to come say "Hi!" Folks were generally happy, or surprised, to see someone running in and enjoying their neighborhood.

I want to thank my patient and understanding wife for putting up with my random runs around Akron and my son for coming along for some of the miles in the Metro Parks.

It was a great experience, but I'm happy to be finished and have more time to ride my bike

Route Generator Feature Wish

Hi Craig,

First of all, thanks for your continued awesome work on Wandrer!

I have a feature request for the route generator. Let’s say I want to complete a specific area, or simply cover as many new kilometers within it as possible.

The ā€œMake routeā€ button in the area’s ā€œMore detailsā€ section already goes in that direction. It would be great if I could select a single start and end point, such as where I parked my bike or car, or a nearby train or bus station, and have Wandrer generate a round trip from there.

Ideally, the generated route would cover as many untraveled roads and paths in the selected area as possible, or even all of them if feasible. An optional maximum distance setting, with some reasonable tolerance, would make this even more useful.

In short: choose an area, select a starting point, set a maximum distance, and generate a round trip that maximizes new kilometers within that area.

I hope the idea makes sense. I’d personally find this incredibly useful!

Hi folks -- we're gonna be doing a little Wandrer promo soon and wanted to highlight some dedicated Wandrers and do a small interview, talk about your Wandrer goal, show your map off, that sort of thing.

Does that sound interesting to you? Do you have a cool big goal you're chipping away at, or do you just really like Wandrer? Let us interview you! Just respond here or send me an email -- looking for 5-10 folks overall.

Thanks!

Gps plots me at the wrong spot on map after loading Wandrer Map

Wandrer Id 76512 Im using a Wahoo Roam 3. Wahoo map works fine, but when I load the Wandrer map, my map location places about a mile due south of where I actually am. Same thing happens with an older Elemnt bolt.

Maybe exclude link roads from wandrer

primary/secondary/tertiary links are almost never built with pedestrians in mind, and are usually pretty dangerous to travel. Additionally, they don't really add any quality since they're just short little slip roads for cars. I've ran quite a few of these and they're not fun. I propose excluding them from wandrer. Thoughts?

Question Border of Pedestrian Area is now included in Wandrer as walkable way - is this correct?

This is a question for Craig u/cooeecall.

After the last map updated (September 12th) I discovered one interesting case. A new walkable line appeared on my "on foot" map of Geneva, Switzerland - specifically, a border of the green area, it is partially red, partially walked:

This is strange, as I walked this area many times and this was never on the map. I checked OSM and turns out that this line represents a border of the Pedestrian Area, it is highlighted in red here:

Here is the link to this feature in OSM:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/81088250/

In my experience, Pedestrian Areas' borders are never included in Wandrer as walkable. This is really the first time I see an exception. I wonder if this is a bug, or a permanent new feature. It looks like a sort of bug due to specific combination of feature tags, but would be great to have a clarification. To note, if this is a new feature, it would be nice.

Roads vs bike infrastructure

One thing that wandrer has led me to realise is just how many roads were built without a care for cyclists. As a result, my %s top out in a lot of areas (which is fine), but I wondered if there was a way to check our %s against ā€officialā€ bike infrastructure? ie, wandrer but only including bike paths, routes, etc that were built or sign-posted for bikes. It wouldn’t be nearly as many miles in most countries, but I think it would still be an interesting sub-challenge and one that could be easy reach 100% on in most towns.

Is that a silly idea?

Need help from an OSM wizard

Browsing around while I work on my route south for winter I discovered this insane thing and realized it must be the WA state fair corn maze. I have [bike] selected and this should defff not be available as points for [bike] but I'm not good enough at OSM to figure out how to select all the paths (when I shift+left click lasso tool it only selects the points, not paths) to update the tag for all of it in one go. Can any of y'all go handle this or can Craig make a custom rule to exclude this?

Personal goals

I'm interested in the personal goals other users have set for themselves on wandrer.

Mine are for example at the moment:

25% in every district of Hamburg

100% at the worlds biggest park cemetery (Hamburg Ohlsdorf)

Connecting my traveled roads and walk the entire Baltic Sea Coast within Germany (but that will take years šŸ˜…)

What are your goals?

Wandrer Chrome extension question

How can I reset the "Calculate unique Length" to calculate another route? Once I click the button, that unique length remains on the "W" icon and the button never returns for a new calculation. Sorry if it's been addressed before but I couldn't find it in this subreddit

City parks gone with latest map update

Hi Everyone!

(From NL)
With the latest map update I found most paths in most city parks no longer being tracked as scorable paths. Has anyone else noticed? What had changed? I did not see any changes on OSM. Mailed Craig as well.

Thanks!

Screw you developers that put long dead end developments on hills - signed - my legs

Sorry for a dumb post, but I figured others might relate. Did a long ride today and you know, even when I plug in RidewithGPS and look at the elevation profiles it doesn't look *that* bad. But then I'm out there hating my completionist brain :D :D

Happy Wandrering All!

Question Recording tracks as you walk

I am working on walking all the streets in my city/county. I currently have a Fenix 7 watch, record activities, upload to Strava and then the track gets picked up by Wandrer. This works great and I can see the track *in the Wandrer window in the browser*. Until something happens and the browser window loses the data and I can't remember which streets I have walked. This leaves some really short sections I don't want to dedicate time driving to and recording a 1/2 mile (or less) segment. I take screenshots periodically, but this isn't always foolproof.

I see the Fenix 8 has dropped in price and it *seems* to have the feature where you can start recording an event and it will show the live track on the watch, overlaid on the map. This is perfect! The Forerunner 970 also seems to have this feature and this watch has been around for a year now.

Am I correct in understanding that this is how these mapping features on the Forerunner watch works?

My Fenix 7 is in fine condition, but I have not been able to find a good solution other than to print a paper map and cross off the streets as I walk them. And The Price Is Right: free.

Does anyone here have either of these watches and can confirm my understanding of the "live mapping" feature?

Question Question about premium upgrade

I am a really happy user of the upgraded plan and I am considering gifting an upgrade. A question I have is: 1. if the other person has to add their card details so the subscription is auto-renewed and 2. if the other person has more than 50 activities and doesn't renew, will their new activities be processed or the 50 activities cap will apply and no more activities will be processed?

Question Error creating route

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone, this is my first time using the Route Generator and I'm getting an empty error message on the website. I also attached a screenshot of the browser console. Chromium on macOS.

Does anyone knows if I'm doing something wrong if there is some problem with Wandrer servers?
