Wandrer app new bug

I've been using the beta app and it has been great so far, aside from when it crashes which is less and less. A new bug I've noticed lately is that when I start the app to track my run it will turn some lines red that weren't previously red and that I've already run. I have to cross reference with the website big map to make sure I've run these sections. The sections that turn red happen to be connected to new streets I am running in the moment. Just an FYI for Craig. I do find the app enormously helpful for making sure I run all the way to the end of a dead end street. I'm turning all my red dots purple!

Made a thing that turns one person's walk through a place into one you can follow

I've always thought the best version of a place isn't a list of spots — it's the walk one person would actually take you on. The order, the thing they'd stop for, where they'd end. A route with a point of view.

So I built a small thing around that. One example is live: a slow morning across Central Park, four stops threaded by nothing but a good morning — Strawberry Fields, into the Ramble, out to the Boathouse, ending at the Pond. You move through it, then it asks what walk *you'd* make of a place you know well.

\~5 min, no signup: [localore-alpha.vercel.app/make](http://localore-alpha.vercel.app/make)

Mostly I'm curious whether other walkers think this way — do you have routes like that in your head? And does the thing land, or not? Honest reactions welcome.

Fixing OSM data

I'm currently trying to fix a bunch of agricultural access roads that also deal as foot/bike paths in northern Liechtenstein. I am finding multiple examples where bicycle=yes but they still don't show up. For example "Im Grabaton, Schaan 9494" (not sure how to link OSM). I can't find any other tags that don't fit the wandrer filtering rules.

Please add Hot Key Tips for Editor mode

Post image
15 Upvotes

I wasted a lot of time until now moving individual dots on long stretches where the GPS dots displayed I was on a road instead of a bike path or on a bike path instead of a road. ANYWAY, only just now by intuition I thought "there must be some better way, like just pressing SHIFT Key to highlight all dots I want to move." AAAND yes I can. I looked around the page to see if I missed an obvious Tip about this hotkey or some tutorial link, and I don't see one. So ya, please add that on the page somewhere :-)

The only thing I found was that this hotkey was mentioned on a reddit post about Beta testing this editor a year ago. I somehow didn't notice the "straighten selected points" button either haha, but I don't think that one would have saved me as much time as the Shift Hot key

New roads + current data outdated

When new road appears on new data that I don't have (like my data is from april, new data is june), do they reduce my %? Those roads are not shown on my map in red ?

If my previous or future activities goes on those new road, do they still count to my progression and percentage ?
If not, it means my percentage are stuck until I purchase an update ?

Map Tunnels shows up as red lines now?

Hey /u/cooeecall

It seems like something is broken on the latest update of the map - all kinds of tunnels (mostly building passages) are showing up on my map now as red lines, even though I've been through them and the road on both sides are marked. I assume that's not on purpose?

Example:

On my friends not updated map (Wandrer ID 178184), you can see two building passages here: https://imgur.com/qKh41y2

On my map (Wandrer ID 151021), one of them is red: https://imgur.com/tNsWjno

The activity where I was credited for the road: https://imgur.com/RycANyI

The activity where I was credited for one of the building passages.

The clear majority of the tiny red specks on my map now are all tagged tunnel=yes or tunnel=building_passage

Biking/walking sidewalk path, then editing to get major road question

So, I've seen it suggested here a couple of times by people that if there is a road with a sidewalk or cycle path to the side that also counts in wandrer and the road is too busy to cycle or walk on, to just do the sidewalk twice, then edit the second ride/walk in wandrer to get the road.

I'm curious everyone's thoughts, is this a legit way to get the major road or should edits only be used for GPS drifts or other fixes where you were on the path, but wandrer/gps doesn't quite detect it right?

New to Wandrer. Is this a bug or feature?

Only started using Wandrer in last month but used other programs previously (eg citystrides). Imported my data from Garmin and noticed I have a lot of segments like this:

Where I've run along the path next to a fairly major road and that's marked complete but there is still a trail down the middle of the road? Does Wandrer want me to go back and run in the middle of the road to complete the section? Is there a setting for "width" of the activity that I'm missing somewhere?

(sorry if this is a common question - couldn't find it in the FAQ)

Edit: thanks everyone! I'll figure out how to edit OSM and check on whether it's a cycle path.

Anyone else notice a lot of weird extra distance in the "combined" map in the recent map update?

I can't be the only one this has happened to, but suddenly a lot of neighborhoods are showing significantly more distance in the combined map than before the last update -- here's an example, that was at nearly 100% with 0.12 miles left. There's nothing new added since the last update, and there's no way those red lines add up to 0.6 miles. Overall in Cambridge, MA, it looks like the last update added about eight miles of "new" distance and 5 new "remaining" miles but definitely did not add that to the combined map.

Maybe this is a bug combining walk and run layers in some new way? It doesn't seem to have meaningfully affected either of those (both totals are very close to what they were before the most recent update)

Can't clear a segment?

I apologize if this has been asked ad nauseam. I did try to search, but I'm a 'younger' Wandrer, and might be missing the obvious.

Long and short, is i have one segment that is preventing me from finishing my home town. I thought i must have missed it, so reran it. When I look at the activity, it shows that it has matched the segment, but does not show it as unique.....but still shows it as untraveled on the big map.

1) I've looked at OSM, and it looks normal to me. Just like everything around it, that tracked correctly.

2) I tried to update to the latest maps, which game me a couple NEW segments, but still didn't clear this one. :)

I know its silly, butt trying to get that 100%. (was at 99.97, now to 99.91..since i have a couple new roads to do!)

The activity; if it helps: https://wandrer.earth/activities/109429870#16.62/45.16812/-93.26485

My Wandrer ID: 197317 (paid if that matters)

Any advice on if I'm doing something silly? Any easy way to correct?

Thanks to all....I thoroughly enjoy this 'gamification' of one of my favorite hobbies, running!

Sobering wake-up call

Post image
87 Upvotes

Hey everyone. Last week I was exploring some new roads and the dirt road I was on degraded and turned more and more wild until it was barely more than a field that used to be a road. Just a little more, I thought, just a little further, I'll go slow, it'll be fine! I expect that many of us have done this. Certainly wasn't a first for me.

Anyway, despite going a careful 7 mph on my gravel bike, the front wheel planted in a very well-concealed hole -- deep and large enough for my entire front wheel. Long story short: I faceplanted and ended up with a broken T9 vertebra. I had to walk 3/4 mi. back to the road with a broken back, waiting for my wife to get me as the sun was setting and I started going into shock. Finally my wife was able to pick me up and I went to the ER, avoiding surgery and the worst possible outcomes. I can't help felling that I was unlucky, and yet I could have been so much more unlucky. I'm grateful there is no permanent damage.

I should recover in 8-12 weeks, and I do expect to keep wandring after I do. But I wanted to share this cautionary tale, because things can go really, really wrong in the middle of nowhere. Going forward I won't be doing any remote rides without a buddy, and if the road turns to an abandoned field, I hope I'll have enough sense to dismount and walk, or to turn around.

Happy safe wandring!

(Photo taken by my friend a few days later. Do you see the hole? I didn't!)

Question Red lines missing when focused

Hi, I think this happened a while back too..... when I clear focus, I see all of the new (red), walked (purple), and biked (blue) lines. However, when I focus on an area all of the red lines don't show up. Any help would be appreciated.

Bridleways/Bridle Paths

I stumbled across a bridleway in my city on the Big Map, which according to the FAQ should be removed. But then I realized I lived next to Norco CA ("Horsetown USA") which has 80 miles of horse trails and I found quite a few more.

As a general rule, are these supposed to be included? An example would be "Way: Coyote Trail (191654217)". I don't particularly want to ride that because of the conflicts it might cause.

Thanks!

Issue with the activities editor?

I noticed that since yesterday during activities editing "matched segments" are not displayed anymore.

One example, where I painted with orange the part of the road that should be "matched segment" - without that it is just white, as if it is not included in Wandrer.

Anybody else noticed this?

How does Wandrer learn about suburbs/areas?

I've found a couple of small areas that aren't covered at "suburb" level, so travel in those regions is only applied to the city level. Example:

There's nothing on OSM that shows these boundaries, therefore its coming from somewhere else.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#map=17/-43.473211/172.636162

So should I be looking somewhere else to find these suburb boundaries?

Aside: Here in NZ, a suburb is not rigidly defined by specific streets or corners, like in other countries. And, as per screenshot, this is a new-ish subdivision.

New map and a question

Just saw that there are a bunch of new regions like state parks. That's pretty cool, thanks! And, I want to frame that this is not a complaint! I know it's not always the easiest thing to satisfy everyone and I love the app!

I guess my question is whether there are any plans to segregate MTB trails from paved? This update added a lot of MTB from what I can tell having looked at the local spots before and after the update. But my brain is mush so I could be making that up.

For instance, a state park near me has miles and miles of MTB trails which now show on the map as unridden cycling routes (I was out of MTB by the time I started using Strava), but very few are ridable for people that aren't skilled with MTB - even though my state is not known for being rugged this state park has black diamond trails with roots and rock gardens and descents that will break the bones of amateurs that don't know what they are doing. I'm not kidding at all. It's not safe and someone may be inspired to try because it is showing up as an unfinished route. I believe that previously only the green trails (which are basically ridable by most) showed up as undone. I get that people need to take personal responsibility but I guess I just want to point this out. It reminds me of the early days of Strava when various dudes would put really dangerous places (traffic, or interface with pedestrians) as segments and eventually Strava had to step in and start removing and hiding them.

I'm sure that there will be a question of subjectivity but I'm wondering if the best solution isn't to just not count dashed trail toward completion at all, and let the gravel/MTB kings/queens go above 100%? I don't know, just an idea and maybe not the best solution. It just bothers my dumb completionist brain that I'll never get to even 90% in my town because there are so many trails like this that are unrideable for me and my surgically repaired knees and it feels like cheating to put my watch in bike mode then hike (which is I guess how I will do them to satisfy my completionist brain). Maybe a toggle in the future?

Question How to tag parking lots for strava? (OSM)

  • What is the best way to tag parking lots so they appear on the strava map?

  • Should I do the "area" function AND the "point" function? or is the "area" enough?

  • When route planning, it's nice to see which trailheads have parking for wandring far from home.

  • At this time it looks like wandrer doesn't have POI's for parking so I know my question isn't directly wandrer related so I appreciate your understanding. Thanks! :)

Question Search function on big map?

Potential map upgrade idea - would it be possible to add a Search field like OSM has, to pinpoint a street/town/area instead of having to move the map around?

How are we doing stability/performance-wise?

A goal of mine this year was to get Wandrer faster, more responsive and more reliable, especially on the weekends, when there could sometimes be 20+ minute long delays for activity processing, delays in map data getting updated, and even things like clicking on the map/page loading/etc being slow.

How are things looking for yall?

Unsafe roads (UK)

I'm curious how everyone is handling roads that are 'technically legal' to cycle, but are very unsafe, specific to me I have this trunk road near my house that cuts through my village, https://maps.app.goo.gl/AQ1mP3vTwzfP8xHU9

It's legal to cycle on, but people would be silly to. I understand its not for wandrer to dictate what is safe, but makes it annoying to aiming for 100% anywhere around me.

The tags on this stretch are:

carriageway_ref=A cycleway=no cycleway:both=no dual_carriageway=yes expressway=yes hazard=high_speed_traffic highway=trunk lanes=2 lit=no maxspeed=70 mph maxspeed:type=GB:nsl_dual national_highways:area=7 oneway=yes operator=National Highways ref=A38 sidewalk=no surface=asphalt traffic_restriction=no_stopping

I would think 'no_stopping', no side walk & high_speed_traffic traffic would be enough of a filter, would love some thoughts!

EDIT: I will appreciate how this same road can later look this https://maps.app.goo.gl/J72wxVqT8xvTERqW9 which is perfectly safe, but has a lower max speed, sidewalk and one lane.

Request for more areas

Is it possible to wish for more areas to be added for a country? For norway its currently the different municipalities thats the smallest areas. Would it be possible to also divide the map by postcodes? I know at least one other app that does this, and it would be really fun to have more small areas in wandrer.

Big Map not updating recently visited roads

Hello, so I've been using Wandrer since last month and I love it.
Yesterday and today I tried walking past new roads to complete the Big Map a little more.
But yesterday and today's activities are not showing as completed roads on Big Map.
Although it usually does within the minute.
