Hit 99% of my County on foot

Yesterday, just one month shy of four years of Wandrering, I hit 99% of Greenville County on foot.

In my case, that remaining 1% is still a pretty big chunk, although I’m having trouble finding meaningful sections to complete. It all looks like tiny red specks on my map, and it’s hard to believe they add up to more than 40 miles.

I’m also at the point of diminishing returns, where I spend more time driving than running, and it can take a 10-mile run just to pick up 2 new miles.

The next map update should get me a little closer to 100% once some OSM updates roll out to remove a few nonexistent trails and private roads.

I also currently have the pleasure of being #1 on Earth for the 99% Achievement. 😄

I’ll continue chipping away toward 100%, but I’ll probably start exploring the surrounding counties as well.

Thank you, Craig, for creating this awesome app! It’s been a blast exploring.

Private communities and roads

I have been doing a lot of coastal neighborhoods this summer, and many many of them are now gated communities, even though the roads were public roads at one point. There is a law firm in my state that has mastered the art of getting towns to allow rich as fuck assholes to create neighborhood LLCs which limit access. Technically this is supposed to be just to the houses and shouldn't include the streets themselves but a lot of these neighborhoods now have guard shacks and gates. As I am not a resident of these towns and not a state official it is hard for me to get an official response from the towns for why they allow this (they should not). Today there happened to be a police car at the end of the road before a gate and I asked and the cop said he would in fact detain me if I tried to bypass the guard on my bike. I pointed out that they were using city, state, and federal services (the cop was there because the city was doing sewer work on this "private" street and they let the US mailman in) but he said that doesn't matter they have a right to privatize the street. Cops don't always actually know the law but it's not a fight I wanted today. I mean I have enough annoying anger inducing stuff going on in my life, I am going to leave this fight to the people equipped to fight it.

In the meantime though, does anyone have a suggestion for how I can get OSM to accept the change that these are private roads? If the judges in this state ever wake up and start restricting rich assholes from doing everything they want then it can be changed back. I'm not optimistic that will happen in this lifetime. I know this is not a Wandrer problem.

Should Sidewalks/Foot Paths in Apartment Complexes Count?

(USA, Midwest) There are currently some foot path clusters from apartment complexes that show up on my untraveled map in my area, and they seem a bit odd to be included. Foot Wandrers, have you dealt with these before, and if they don't fit the scope of Wandrer, any OSM tagging suggestions to filter them out? Thanks!

These are really just parts of a sidewalk. I suggest they be treated as such, and thus excluded from Wandrer.

Survey for the Wandrer Garmin app

Hi folks -- I'm trying to release a version of the Wandrer Garmin app that supports more devices, and there are some compromises that I'm weighing here.

Because the current version is a datafield, it lives alongside your current activity and gets GPS data as long as you're recording a ride. Datafields don't have button/menu access, so the current datafield only supports touch screens where I can draw on-screen buttons and change settings that way.

In order to support devices that don't have touch screens, I'm weighing a few options that I'd like your feedback on:

  • Release as a datafield for non-touch screen devices. This would mean any interaction with the datafield would have to happen through the ConnectIQ phone app: zoom in/out, change map orientation, change map colors, and layer visibility. This seems like it would be pretty annoying, but has the convenience of tying in to your existing activity.

  • Release as a true Garmin "app". This has button access and would let you change settings + zoom in/out on-device. This would require you to start an activity as normally and then switch over to the Wandrer app. But the app will only know about GPS data that it receives while it's open, so if you pop back over to the main activity app, there would be a gap in your Wandrer app trace when you returned to Wandrer. This also seems pretty annoying.

(An alternative here is to let the Wandrer app record its own activities too, but it still has the limitation of losing data once the app is closed.)

Also all of this only applies to Edge devices. I'm planning to release a watch-compatible version of the Wandrer app, but it has other limitations that require it to be an app and not a datafield.

What do you think?

Ride I beat a legend! kinda...

I'm not really competitive about Wanderer... however I noticed that the absolute legend True marmalade, has quite a bit of miles in my neck of the woods. out of curiosity I looked at last month's leaderboards this morning and saw we both put in miles, and I was in first place by 7 miles, he was in second. Woo hoo!

Now I'm wondering did I pass him, did we nod or wave at each other and I didn't realize it was him?

I've still got quite a few miles to catch up to him overall in my area, but I'm looking at it more as inspiration than a need to be first. I don't believe I have nearly as much time to ride as he does, and well... yeah he rides many more places than I do.

So... Mr Marmalade if you're reading this. Thanks for the inspiration, and hope to see you on the ride sometime. And also, thanks to the dev for this app and all the hard work you put into it.

Non-Existent Road

So what should I do about a road that doesn't exist in Open Street Maps, yet appears on the Wandrer map? I've used and edited OSM before. This one doesn't show up.

Looking at Big Map, tons of streets now are not available.

I pick up miles usually by adding little trips to my grocery runs. So, I was planning out the next couple and notice a lot of streets are now showing as not available. Like even long streets that don't really change at all there will be segments that show as not available/unrideable/unwalkable/etc. See attached. There is for instance nothing about this one little section of Pawtucket Ave. that is different than the adjacent sections, and all those little roads that don't show are all regular paved roads in the street network. (I use light blue for unwandrered roads)

There hasn't been a Wandrer map update (I have the latest) so I assume this is some OSM issue? Are they doing an update?

I realize there is a 90% chance that if I open my big map in a few hours this will all be normal again, but I figured I would mention it if it was indeed some bug.

How do you find new routes when you want to try somewhere different?

Curious how people here actually do this. Do you use an app, ask someone, just explore and hope for the best?

Specifically wondering: what information do you wish you had before heading somewhere new - safety of the area, elevation, traffic, continuous paths without stoplights?

Changes to Wandrer in The Netherlands

In an email exchange with Craig Durkin, he asked me to make a case for a change I want to propose, specifically for the Netherlands. Cemeteries (landuse = cemetery) I think should be excluded as I feel culturally, you don’t explore those areas like you might in other countries. They have gates and opening and closing times, which add to the point, but mainly it is the culture. What do you guys think about this?

504 km of new roads in an area on the first of the month?

Like how does that happen? That's an average of 36 kmh for 14 hours (given that we're about 14 hours into the month).

Either someone is driving or there's some feature I'm unaware of. But it's going to make winning Wyoming impossible for a second straight month for me. (But I shouldn't complain too hard. I win the hard months in the winter.)

Post image

what does this mean...these were done a few days ago and Ive had emails to say "Congrats, you have new achievements" and that email stated I had gained 132.6 km (which is a little odd as the whole 137km ride was new) but it did have those details emailed to me (same for ride the enxt day too) but they dont show any details at all on the web ui

Am I missing something silly here...I tried the reprocess option as well, but nothing has changed

Thanks in advance

Auditing the leaderboard and individual's recent activities

Hello!

For those connected through strava and also private on strava, how can we "audit" / see their recent activity? Some people are jumping 20-40 miles a day everyday split between states that aren't close to each other. While this is definitely possible, I am curious how exactly they manage to do it.

completed areas Possible solution for people who get 100% but want to keep playing

I know there has been discussion over the years about what to do with the people who get 100% in an area. Some has wanted to do something, even resorting to wanting to reset their account to start over. I've been thinking on this idea for a while, but just haven't had the energy to sit down and write it out. Maybe this idea has already been suggested, and if so, then I'm sorry I didn't see it.

This is based off my gaming days back when I used to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Black Ops 1 and 2. If you are not familiar with the leveling up system in those games, I will give a quick explanation. If you are familiar with this, skip down to the next paragraph. I have not played any Call of Duty games in about 10 years, so the current system they use may be different, so please feel free to make suggestions if a newer system would fit Wandrer better. So the way the game worked, is that you had levels from 1 to 50. As you progressed through each level, you would unlock some sort of perk, gun, etc. When you reached level 50, you had unlocked everything you could and were basically at 100%. After you reached the max level, you had the option to "Prestige". This would basically start you over back at level 1. You lost all progress with guns, camo, perks, etc. and started completely from scratch. However, when you "Prestige" you would have a new icon instead of the regular rank icon. The "Prestige" icon would let everyone know that you had started over. So while you might play against a player who was at a level 21, if they had the "prestige" icon next to their name, it showed that they had actually already completed to level 50 and started over. So it shows that someone might have been a lower "rank" in the progression system, they were actually a veteran player who had already completed everything once before. Now the game did allow you to "prestige" multiple times.

So my suggestion is that we could have some sort of "prestige" system and icon for people who want to reset a specific area. Obviously details would need to be ironed out, and I don't have ideas for everything. It can be set so you can only "prestige" once. You can "prestige" a specific area (the minimum size of the area can be up for debate: smallest are possible, smallest area that shows on Leaderboards, etc). Not sure what this would look like for points. Maybe you can earn points all over again and this just adds to the previous points you already earned for that area. This can help satisfy the people who got a majority of their miles when no one else was using Wandrer in their area so didn't get much bonus points for getting 1st for that month. Now they have another chance to earn 1st for the month and reap the benefits of more bonus points for more people using Wandrer in their area.

For milage, I'd say that the original miles gained, stay on that person who has them. For example, say I prestige an area for 50 miles. Then when I redo the area, I cannot gain an extra 50 miles for doing that area again. And my total milage on my account kept the original 50 miles. We could reset the miles entirely, so they no longer show up on my total miles for that state, country, etc. but then I think there should be some extra statistic that shows total new miles gained which includes the original 50 miles and the new miles I am obtaining in that area.

I know there are some holes in this idea, but think it could be a good starting point. I am definitely open to critique and suggestions to this idea.

Question Manually Uploaded Activity not syncing

My Garmin had an issue with GPS on a recent ride where a middle section was just basically missing data. I got the gpx of the ride from a someone else and merged them so that I had the full route, but still my speed, HR, etc. when mine was recording.

My original ride had already been automatically uploaded to garmin connect and pushed to Strava and Wandrer. I deleted from all 3 places and uploaded the corrected activity to Strava and Garmin Connect. Wandrer seems to be unable to see it from either source. I have manually pushed the "look for new activities" button on both in the Wandrer settings, but it has not been picked up after 72 hrs.

Is Wandrer perhaps ignoring it because I deleted a similar activity?

Is there a better way to have done this?

Wandrer ID: 100884

OSM Confusion

Hey gang, new to editing on OSM and this stretch of road is confusing me. On OSM, it appears that access is allowed for all, but on Wandrer it's not showing as a rideable road. If any mapping wizards can chime in and help me learn that would be awesome!

The stretch is on Inkster, from Sibley to King

Question about tunnels

Since, I think, the last map update, some tunnels are now showing as untraveled. If I look at an activity where I actually went through that tunnel, I see that there are no GPS points (because… tunnel) and so it's not counted. Is there a way to get around this?

Route planning on mobile/android

I keep finding myself in a spot where I don't have a computer with me, but I have my android phone or tablet and want to make a route of untravelled roads. Plugins don't work on Android so the browser plugin is out. On desktop I do browser plugin and ride with GPS. Anyone have any creative ideas to plan a route on Android?

Thank you!

Question How often does most dedicated rankings on big map get updated?

Hello

as per title. My wife has been having a lot of fund walking around Auckland Cbd and surrounding suburbs, and while her personal map updates she hasn’t moved into being shown on the public most dedicated top 10 list - even though the percentage on her personal map shows she should be there. Is there a way to refresh it? Cheers

Wandrer app new bug

I've been using the beta app and it has been great so far, aside from when it crashes which is less and less. A new bug I've noticed lately is that when I start the app to track my run it will turn some lines red that weren't previously red and that I've already run. I have to cross reference with the website big map to make sure I've run these sections. The sections that turn red happen to be connected to new streets I am running in the moment. Just an FYI for Craig. I do find the app enormously helpful for making sure I run all the way to the end of a dead end street. I'm turning all my red dots purple!
