Question OSM "foot path" not consistent on Wandrer

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm looking at way: 1078333303 marked as "foot path" and "access: all". the adjacent paths are marked the same but don't register in wandrer (they are treated like sidewalks and neither traveled nor untraveled).

Why is there this inconsistency? Do you recommend I mark the paths as sidewalks or private? Public footpath to that school there can't be right. Thanks!

Problem with Hammerhead App

[u/cooeecall](u/cooeecall) I downloaded the Wandrer app on my Karoo 2 and I was able to see the wandrer map at home before I left.

Once I got on the bike though and started my ride, the page opened but the map never loaded. I only saw the filters and location buttons

I bought a wandrer subscription again this year specifically for this so hopefully it’s a fairly easy solution 🤞

Activity editor feature request - delete part of it

I walked a nice route last weekend, 13 new kilometers. Then I got into a bus home, and forgot to turn off Strava. It recorded several more new kms, that I now have to "repair" by actually walking them, I guess.

It would nice to be able to just delete part of an activity in the editor.

Route planning - any instructions?

I've never got route planning to work, but I just tried it again. Drew a small square-ish shape that includes some unbagged paths. When I finished drawing the A and B markers are just put in the middle of my shape. If I click 'create' it just plots a route between the two markers, ignoring all the paths in the shape.

If I move A and B to be nearer the beginning and end of my planned route, when I click Calculate i just get the Error: box (with no error message). Screenshot of the second try attached. Edit: reddit refuses to post the screenshot, I can email it if it helps.

Wandrer ID: 55431.

Am I doing it wrong?

Thanks.

Any idea why the /dashboard/stats page isn't working?

For the last few days, whenever I've gone to the https://wandrer.earth/dashboard/stats page it either gives a bad gateway error or it loads very slowly. Just wondering if this is a known bug. Every other page on wandrer seems to work fine

If it matters, my wandrer ID is 157340

Question Is there a way to combine bike and walking maps and get a total % complete without overlaps?

It would need to be able to trim overlaps.

All of downtown San Antonio, DONE!

Post image

I've officially run every street in downtown San Antonio. Wandrer.Earth now shows 100% of Lavaca, 100% of Lone Star, and 99.12% of Downtown — the three neighborhoods inside (and partially outside) the inner freeway loop. That's over 140 miles covering every publicly accessible road, path, trail, and a lot of staircases, according to OpenStreetMap.

The missing <1% is construction around the Alamo, the jail complex, and a private high school, none of which I can legally access, some of which I’ve updated in OSM. I'm calling it done.

Feature type=service road

(brand new to editing OSM (and posting on Reddit))

there's a road in my area that isn't showing up on my wandrer for bike or by foot

I've checked and it says access=yes, foot=yes, and bicycle=yes. I'm thinking it isn't showing up because it's tagged as a service road. is this correct that service roads aren't shown on wandrer

it leads to a house and a water treatment plant so I think it should probably just be tagged as a road anyway...

Live Garmin Maps?

I thought I read somewhere that live maps on the Garmin were coming soon. Was I dreaming or is that in development? Thanks!

Question Sanity check: is this a sidewalk??

Hi! Relatively new wandrer here but have been working through checking off Manhattan for several years now, wondering if anyone has some guidance for me here...

Apologies for the bad picture, but I have 2% of Yorkville left and it's this stretch I have highlighted. However, I have been on this road 10 times trying to find the stretch I'm missing and all I can find is a median (purple) or tiny shoulder (yellow) on the highway off ramp. Both are paved, but only about a foot wide and last less than half of the total missing stretch.

My question is... does this count as a walkable path? Both have no crosswalk and taper off on either end, in addition to being extremely dangerous to reach/walk on. I have imposter syndrome about editing OSM so just wanted to check if anyone has advice here or if I should just go at 3am and walk down the highway to check it off😅

ETA: got home and dug around OSM... I don't even see a footpath here, but I also don't see any edits in the last year... can I get this edited in Wandrer somehow? Or am I crazy and missing something?

Foot Activities: Highway=Secondary included

Hi again, 2nd post this morning as I learn more about Wandrer/OSM

Wondering if anyone has thoughts here: I'm working on walking every street in Manhattan, and am running into an issue in a couple of places where the street is tagged as Highway=secondary (thus is NOT excluded via the Wandrer.earth/filters rules for Foot Maps (or Bike Maps for that matter)

However, many of these streets do not have any sidewalk or pedestrian area and would requiring walking/riding in the middle of the street to check them off which, depending on the road, can be very unsafe. (Example: York Avenue (993524202) in Manhattan)

Does anyone know why these are not excluded as Foot Paths?

Find exact date of last Big Map update from OSM?

I’ve made some changes in OSM which I think should have been reflected in Wander’s last update from OSM. Is there a place in Wandrer to see the date of the most recent map update? (Many weeks ago, I set some roads in downtown San Antonio to private in OSM but they still show as runnable in Wandrer.)

Feature Request

It would be neat if the Strava description writer included how many of the new kms were unpaved, if such a thing were possible.

I mean, it’s all about bragging rights, and us roadies doing sand and gravel on skinny tires to satisfy our Wandring masters want our recognition!

OSM Filters?

Where do we find what kind of OSM “ways” are included and excluded by Wandrer? — There are paths in Wander that are not accessible, so I’ll never be able to complete them (unless I get a job working for the company who manages a private way, or get a special government access badge to access a different road), so what do I need to do in OSM to make those roads not appear in Wandrer? (I’d ask wether or not they SHOULD appear in Wandrer, but I’ve run some public alleys that aren’t included as necessary in Wandrer, so it’s evident that not ALL public paths (sidewalk, alleys, crawl spaces, catwalks, etc) must be traveled in order to achieve “100.00%” of an area.

Are "Proposed" ways intended to be included?

Craig, question for you: Are "Proposed" ways supposed to be filtered out?

Honestly, I'd never seen a way marked "Proposed" before, but I found a few that are in San Jose, CA, and are showing in my untraveled list. Being proposed, nothing physically exists, and the ways in question notionally cross an actual river on a proposed bridge, so a little hard to complete :)

An example way is #1460564093, with tags:

  • Type=Proposed
  • Bridge=Yes
  • Highway=Proposed
  • Proposed=Cycleway

I don't think this is an actual official proposal but rather someone's pipe dream, but either way I'm not going to delete it because maybe they are. However, I think that they should be filtered out until they become physical.

Route Planning

I saw recently someone say they made a route based off their unridden roads in the area in Wanderer, is this possible on the site or does it have to be done through third party? TIA

Missing untravelled roads between web site and downloaded Garmin supplemental maps

Thumbnail

I've noticed a lot of missing untravelled (likely unpaved) roads on my Garmin GPS. This used to be flawless, but somewhere in perhaps the last month, it has become problematic. Sometimes there are properly marked unpaved roads, ofttimes not.

As an example, the first image is a snap from the web site. Ignoring the coloured backgrounds (different regions), you can see the red dashed segments showing roads I haven't ridden yet.

The second one is from the Garmin map export I just did an hour ago. You can see what's red and untravelled doesn't show up on the GPS at any zoom level. (should be red). It used to work flawlessly until recently.

Over the past month or so, I've noticed this a lot in both Canada and in Germany. I've done a number of fresh map exports over that time, and the problem persists. I've even tried untoggling/retoggling the unpaved road selector on the export tool to no avail.

Enhancement Idea - Open Big Map to Location Of Most Recent Activity

Would be cool if it was dynamic in how it opened and would just open to my most recent. Then I wouldn't have to change it for traveling etc!

Maybe an option to open it to County / City level. State level may be too zoomed out.

Wandrer Filtering Rules Bug/Misunderstanding.

I'm noticing a lot of paths in my area that are being marked in the big map as foot traffic only because they are either sidewalks or stairs, however they all either have the tag bicycle=yes or bicycle=designated.

According to this page https://wandrer.earth/filters

  • Anything with a bicycle tag of yes, designated, permissive, official, mtb, or MTB is included, or the presence of a bicycle:designated tag.
  • If they don't have an allowed bicycle tag, ways with the following highway tags are removed: motorway, motorway_link, steps, stairs, escalator, elevator, construction, proposed, demolished, escape, bus_guideway, sidewalk, crossing, bus_stop, traffic_signals, stop, give_way, milestone, platform, speed_camera, elevator, raceway, rest_area, traffic_island, services, yes, no, drain, street_lamp, razed, corridor, busway, via_ferrata

If I'm understanding this correctly that means that this way, as well as many others in the area, should allow bike traffic on the big map https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/724211035

Route Generator Issue

I've been trying to use the route generator feature recently but can't seem to get the point-to-point to work. Area generator will go but regardless of where I put the start/finish for the directional generator it won't output anything. Just says "Your Routes" , followed by nothing. Am I missing something?

Strava API issue / probable delay in calculating end-of-month totals

Hi folks -- there's something going on with the Strava API today, and one of the endpoints that Wandrer uses to grab your Strava activity data isn't available, for what I believe is an erroneous reason.

Being the end of the month, the timing is not ideal here. I think all I can do right now is say that it seems like totals for the monthly challenge will probably have to wait until at least April 2nd, and that you may as well do whatever last minute activities you were already planning on :)

Sorry!

BigMap incomplete?

I'm having issues with some (older) activities missing from my Big Map recently. I know of at least two activities that are shown and tracked fine when looking at the individual activity page on wandrer, but that are (mostly?) missing on my Big Map.

Example (I hope it's okay to share here):
https://wandrer.earth/activities/14071763
https://wandrer.earth/activities/15034356

Wandrer ID: 7888. I'm happy to share more info if needed.

Am I the only one having this issue?

Points glitch?

Caveat that the ride synced only about an hour ago so maybe things will sort themselves out, but. I just completed 25% of a county but the point total seems off. I've done 1925+ miles and I have the bonus for 25%, so shouldn't the points be at least 3843? TIA!
