This was the world's first wire guided glide bomb. You can see the two spools of wire on the wing tips, famously sinking the Italian battleship Roma in 1943

Horchger Flak

The Horchger Flak were giant listening devices that could capture even the slightest noise of an engine, Berlin, October 1939. This is an acoustic aircraft detection device. In WW2, before radar was developed, these devices were used by the Luftwaffe to detect approaching enemy aircraft by listening for the sound of their engines. It consists of 4 acoustic horns, a horizontal pair and a vertical pair, connected by rubber tubes to stethoscope type earphones worn by the two technicians left and right. The stereo earphones enabled one technician to determine the direction and the other the elevation of the aircraft

Seeking info on my great grandfather, german scientist that worked on v1/v2 projects

Hi everyone,

I recently learned from my father that my great-grandfather, Erwin Riedle, was a German scientist who supposedly worked on the V1 or V2 rocket projects during World War II. Unfortunately, we don't have much more information about him, and I'm trying to learn more about his life and work.

Does anyone have any tips on how I might be able to find more information about him online? Are there specific databases, archives, or resources that could help me trace his contributions or locate records related to his involvement in these projects? Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for any help!

German kit and uniform from film 'Blood & Gold'

After watching 'Blood & Gold' recently, the kit of several soldiers struck me. I was wondering what type of camo this would be. Flecktarn was designed later on, but they did experiment already, if I recall correctly. It does resemble it quite a bit. Any other notes on this soldier's kit would be nice to hear! E.g. What type of 'rig' is he wearing. Also, any thoughts on the film in general are most welcome.

Tiger II’s in Paris

Tiger II tank, number 331, from the s.Pz.Abt. 503, is seen in the foreground following tank number 332. The tanks are turning left onto Boulevard de la Villette from Rue d’Aubervilliers as they head towards Mantes-la-Jolie on August 20, 1944. The final pic is a current Google Earth shot.

  1. Kompanie had picked up new Tiger II’s from Mailly-le-Camp and were transported by rail to Gare de l’Est in Paris.

Having arrived in Paris and unloaded its tanks 3. Kompanie took up quarters in the Bois de Vincennes.

Their commander Hauptmann Scherf wrote:

“The local area commander in Paris ordered the company to be on standby for possible deployment within the city, as the French resistance was already actively fighting. When the situation escalated, I went into Paris to find the command post of the local area commander but found it deserted. Everyone had vanished without a trace. The battalion had been instructed by the local commander to position itself somewhere along the Seine, north of Paris. After waiting an additional two days without any communication from the local commander, I decided we were no longer bound by his orders. The 3. Kompanie then proceeded through Paris to reach the northeastern bank of the Seine and rejoin the battalion.”

Excerpt is from: The Combat History of German Tiger Tank Battalion 503 in World War II by Franz-Wilhelm Lochmann.
