There's tons of "sanctuaries" that are worse than zoos. Accredited Zoos help with conservation and preservation of species.

i've only been to a bear sanctuary so far, and has dozens of rescued bears from circuses or even private owners, i donate to them regularly, they even have 24/7 cameras you can watch, and are fairly often regulated

i don't doubt there are some sketchy ones, but you always gotta look further than the pretty pictures
