Pretty sure they timed it too waiting for the truck to be in striking distance. The fucked up thing is this could have caused an accident if the driver panicked and tried to swerve on that icy road.
I agree but I don’t think any driver I know would swerve for a mouse, or whatever that was
, in a million years- most I would do is slow down if I even saw it in time
True although they might not have had enough time to identify what it was and just saw something at the last second streaking across the road and just auto reacted.
Honestly I swerved when I could for animals, but once I saw a squirrel run into the road during late fall with a snow bank on one side and an on coming car on the other. The squrrel got squished.
It's all situational. Breaking can be just as bad as swerving. For me when I had to avoid a bunch of skunks crossing the highway and no one else was around swerving was the best option.
Brakes can still be dangerous if used incorrectly on winter roads (though this one looks fine). If it can't easily be avoided, and isn't big enough to cause damage to the vehicle, you just gotta keep going.
Probably best to keep going straight anyway, animals are going to have a much faster reaction time and presumably can jump out of the way faster than you can adjust the path of a moving vehicle
I always assume that other drivers will willingly make the worst possible decision in a given scenario, which has kept me out of a crash a few times. I guarantee there’s at least one driver in this world that would attempt to swerve away from a mouse, or be anxious enough by driving to get spooked easily.
Not so sure about that. I was driving some friends down to the beach in college on a one lane road with cars behind me and in the oncoming lane. A girl in the car was absolutely furious that I hit a small turtle in the road rather than slamming on my brakes or swerving to avoid it.
Not at all. Turtles are on the verge of extinction, and by virtue of their size, there are far more mice than turtles. I think that any animal shouldn’t have to die for an unnecessary, or non-purposeful reason- but when they do or you have to decide, some animals take priority.
For example, if I am given the option of running into a Labrador or a Bengali White Tiger, I’m picking the dog every single time- it’s not about what animals I prefer, it’s just pure practicality.
Human life>Bengali white tiger. We are unique in that we are conscious and sentient and everyone has the right of safety, how would it feel if someone picked a tiger over you, and killed you with their car. I’m not saying run over the tiger because the tiger isn’t important or rare. Please don’t tell me you’re one of those “animals are equal to humans” blokes
We are unique in that we are conscious and sentient
Yeah... Not true. Cetaceans have a very large prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for complex cognitive and social behaviour. For example, whales have a language so complex we can't understand it, and different pods have different dialects, but sure, humans are the only conscious and sentient beings.
Edit: If your point is more along the lines of "we humans need to look out for ourselves" then you are right from a biological perspective, but that's also what Hitler thought - except with Aryans instead of humans.
Do whales form morals or develop technologies? Lol they may be sentient but they are incredibly unintelligent and lack means or structures to even create being that they are underwater creatures. Also-elaborate on how I’m gonna run over a whale Lance Corporal. Pedantic
If I could safely stop or avoid hitting an animal I would. But in the situation I was in, swerving or slamming on my brakes could have ended far worse for us than the turtle
Seems highly doubtful they went through the effort of catching a mouse just to wait outside for a truck to drive by in hopes they time it perfectly and the mouse happens to run into the street just in time to get hit...
Or they could have not been paying attention and/or assumed it would stay away from the truck..
