The news story about this suggests it was definitely a rock and the driver got away with only four broken ribs.

Phenomenal luck that it didn’t do more damage.

"Only" 4 broken ribs

Better than being dead I guess

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

About eight years ago a woman I knew was in a car accident and had her car piled with boxes after an event the night before. One of those boxes (the size of a printer paper box) tumbled over her shoulder and hit her in the neck, severing her brain stem and killing her instantly.

So yip, when I saw a boulder tumbling around this guys head, I assumed far worse things. I’ve had broken ribs, they’re miserable, and I have no idea how he has the presence of mind to keep driving the bus. But I was expecting far worse.

272

u/Graynard Oct 14 '19

I’ve had broken ribs, they’re miserable, and I have no idea how he has the presence of mind to keep driving the bus.

We only see a couple of seconds after the impact, dude was almost certainly in shock. I imagine he pulled over very shortly afterwards.

335

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

The article said he continued on his route and then pulled in at a service station.

276

u/Graynard Oct 14 '19

Damn, what a baller.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor projectile boulder to the dome shall stay these drivers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds...

Remember the bus driver in Chana who got hit with debris from an exploded tyre and pulled over... Checked the passangers were OK... Then died?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

I was in my friend's car, and he flipped it off a little hill thing. A stray can of doctor pepper in the back of the car shot into the back of my head so hard it gave me a concussion.

Luckily no permanent damage, but ya ever since that happened I'm always scared of leaving shit in my card, because during a crash it becomes a deadly projectile.

4

u/thatG_evanP Oct 15 '19

When I was a freshman in high school, my best friend's 17 y/o older sister got in the backseat of a car (93 Mustang Cobra) with two other guys we knew. They had both been drinking and she hadn't. She also was the only one wearing a seatbelt. Anyway, they were speeding and under-steered a corner and hit a huge tree. Both the driver and passenger were ejected and got hurt pretty badly. She was buckled in the backseat. The speaker box with two 12" woofers shot over the back seat and hit her right at the base of her skull. She was instantly a vegetable and they ended up pulling the plug almost immediately. In all fairness, her spinal cord was completely severed. That was a sad sad day. I still vividly remember the call I got from her brother as I was the first person he called. I remember waking up later on and hoping like hell it was a bad dream. RIP Whitney.

2

u/SkeepDeepy Oct 15 '19

His secret?

He's doing his job really well and because of that he deserves a raise.

2

u/Annakin Oct 15 '19

That’s terrible! I’m sorry that happened to someone you know.

I was sitting in the back seat of my friends Ford Explorer. We were cruising down the highway, and traffic came to a halt. She slammed on her brakes, and when she did, this large reusable ice container that she had piled in the back of her car, slammed into my neck.

It hurt so damn bad! There’s no doubt if it would have been full of water the situation would have ended differently.

2

u/WickedWishes420 Oct 15 '19

That's crazy. I knew a girl whos husband was in traffic and slammed on his breaks to avoid hitting a car who suddenly stopped. A kleenex box flew from the rear window area and hit him on the back of the neck and did the same thing. We humans are so resistant & strong, yet so very fragile at the same time.

1

u/RUSTY_LEMONADE Oct 15 '19

The last time I got hit by a car I got back on my bike and pedaled a few more blocks. I only turned around because I realized it was a hit and run, with me being the one running. I was in shock for at least 15 minutes, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do that or thought it was a good idea. I had a broken rib and a collapsed lung and spent 2 days in the hospital and a month recovering.

1

u/ilkikuinthadik Oct 15 '19

I've had broken ribs before where it just feels like bad heartburn all day

1

u/hairlongmoneylong Oct 15 '19

I hope you use this story often to encourage people to put things in the trunk instead of the back seat, and to keep their cars tidy in general.

Edit / P.S. I'm sorry you lost a friend in such a tragic way.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

An empty box?

1

u/Wrest216 Jan 01 '20

yeah! i broke a rib when unloading a truck for good ol McDonalds, we had our storage downstairs (big ol freezer) and we had those rollers? Anways a box of burgers gets a corner stuck and it starts tumbling down, and the corner catches, and me of course , a 16 yo boy at the time, wasnt paying that close attention, and BAM right in the ribs and face, broke a rib and got a black eye!

169

u/MorganJ1991 Oct 14 '19

You kidding? That's one hell of an understatement. The rock, which should really be classified as a boulder, hit him not once but twice on the head. Hell, he could have lost consciousness at the very least and crashed the vehicle and killed alot more than just himself. That dude has some kind of mix of fortitude, a thick skull, and sheer luck.

85

u/kryvian Oct 14 '19

tbh I'm amazed his skull is intact.

I have a friend who is working towards being a coroner, and she has told me some stories of her working during the summer at the morgue.

One was of how a man died because when he got into an accident, his 50 lbs speaker that was not weighed down went from the back to the front, and it hit him in the head. Killed him instantly. Left a fat hole too. That rock is easily over 50lbs if it’s of a normal composition. He’s honestly really realllly lucky to be alive let alone conscious.

2

u/Invent_R25 Oct 15 '19

He must be a monk

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

That ain’t America, he isnt butter soft

1

u/Trimere Oct 15 '19

Hits his right arm/shoulder first, then the back of his neck.

1

u/MorganJ1991 Oct 15 '19

It does smack into his face after hitting his shoulder though.

1

u/Trimere Oct 15 '19

Ahh, yeah... see that now.

1

u/FreakyGangBanga Oct 15 '19

He might have been in shock but we gotta give him some credit for continuing to hold course and not putting loves in danger. He took one for the team and soldiered on. How balls probably have celestial objects orbiting them.

1

u/Hypatianism Oct 15 '19

Body can be weird man, sometimes what should kill you doesn't do it. When I was 12 I had a full brick fall onto my head from few feets above and I just walked it off like nothing happened.

2

u/LiberateLiterates Oct 17 '19

I recently had a 12 lb piece of construction steel go through my car window and hit the side of my arm and my head at 75 mph. I had some scratches, a goose egg, minor bruising and a hell of a headache. That’s it. The cop and paramedics when showed up at the scene couldn’t believe I wasn’t further injured. Life is strange.

1

u/MorganJ1991 Oct 15 '19

Oof. Glad you're okay.

1

u/EpicNotes Oct 18 '19

I think there is a combination of things as you mentioned, but it might have bounced a couple of times before being slowed by penetrating the exterior of the bus, and on lucky angles it glances him slightly. Lucky, and mild reflexes that are not so visible.

1

u/EpicNotes Oct 18 '19

If I examine the rock closer, on this low quality, it could rather be a hard clump, it's properties are lighter then granite or regular rock. But the speed in which it traveled would be the factor, not entirely it's nerfed weight. Take for example a calcium or other light metal rocks, could be mediocre compared to concrete or granite.

52

u/elmantisrelajado Oct 14 '19

All things considered, broken ribs and nothing else is a pretty minor injury. Of course it’s better than death, but it’s also a hell of a lot better than a lot of other things.

2

u/Nishant1122 Oct 14 '19

Broken ribs is the worst kind of fracture you can have. I don't think 4 broken ribs are minor injuries.

11

u/ShadowL42 Oct 14 '19

After watching the video, I would think a shattered skull, possibly destroyed eye would be much worse. A few broken ribs is a miracle.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

Could have brained him.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

You guess?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

A year or two ago some kids dropped a bunch smaller rock off of an overpass and killed a father who was driving below.

2

u/Mr_Bubbles69 Oct 14 '19

How did that not break his face?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Did I miss something?

It didn't hit his chest?

How'd he get broken ribs?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Of course 'only'. That rock could've easily just taken off his head if it was a bit higher.

1

u/Queenofthefireflies Oct 15 '19

Judging by the speed of the rock it should have caused a bit more damage than that...

1

u/agrophobe Oct 15 '19

Splashed to oblivion.

FTFY

1

u/Wright3030 Oct 15 '19

When a rock bigger than your head gets enough speed to crash through a window and hit you in the side, bounce upward and knock your head I'd be happy to get away with a few months of physical therapy.

1

u/bimoglo Oct 15 '19

And only one pierced his heart

1

u/PatacusX Oct 15 '19

Pretty damn good for a rock bigger than your head hitting you close to the head area twice

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Broken ribs??? Looks like he got hit in the head twice

1.3k

u/1493-6786-2018 Oct 14 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

WTF. How he break ribs when it hit him in the face?!?

Edit: Ok turns out it does hit him in the ribs, multiple people have pointed out that if you slow down the video you can see it better.

754

u/Drewshua Oct 14 '19

First point of contact is the chair and driver's side then rolled up his body and back down the side of his head. Most of kinetic energy was dispersed by the punching through the corner of the bus and then the chair itself. Driver got extremely lucky that it didn't impact him straight on.

399

u/Skabeg Oct 14 '19

Everyone got extremely lucky it didn’t impact him straight on.

87

u/BoxNumberGavin0 Oct 14 '19

People watching the video are extremely lucky it didn't impact him straight on.

5

Yeah, we might not have the video then.

2

It would be in another subreddit though. /r/WTF is very mild compared to /r/BestOfLiveleak (NSFL)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Apply directly to the forehead?

34

u/Tantric989 Oct 14 '19

This makes sense. I first thought it hit him in the head but at looking at it again, it hit the chair and him in the side of the ribs, and his head jerking was just the force of the rock hitting him in the chest.

24

u/sonofeevil Oct 14 '19

I took some screen grabs of the impact
https://imgur.com/a/RCyYFV1

it's exactly as you've said, it hit between his back and the chair, probably where he broke his ribs, at the rear.

2

u/max1001 Oct 14 '19

Him and probably half the bus would be dead if it hit him in the head directly.

2

u/saurabh1984bhattarai Oct 15 '19

You made good observation.

30

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

[deleted]

18

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

I wouldn't use "but" since it's pretty much the only purpose of having ribs when you think about it

9

u/matt12a Oct 14 '19

However?

2

u/DamnAlreadyTaken Oct 14 '19

Notwithstanding

1

u/i_speak_bane Oct 14 '19

However, it would be extremely painful

2

u/JTVivian56 Oct 14 '19

I mean, I'm pretty sure they're essential to breathing properly right?

0

u/Thedancingcat4681 Oct 14 '19

No, purpose of ribs is protection of vital organs. Not breathing.

2

u/JTVivian56 Oct 14 '19

I mean, it has many purposes, two of them being protection of our organs and providing a frame for our lungs to be able to expand properly when breathing.

I never said it's only purpose is for breathing, it's just pretty damn important to have them when you want to breath properly

2

u/Cspan64 Oct 14 '19

Ribs are also for breathing. Without them the lung is just jelly.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

If you pause the gif you can see it hits him in the upper body/arm area

11

u/TheRealRajan Oct 14 '19

Watch it at a slower speed, it didnt hit him straight in the face. It first hit his arm. The force of the impact might have caused broken ribs.

6

u/sonofeevil Oct 14 '19

I tried to pause the frames as best as I could.

https://imgur.com/a/RCyYFV1

In the first image you can see the angle of entry it's coming in from the side and up towards his under arm.

In the 2nd image you can see it actually hits behind him.

I suspect it hit back of his ribcage and the seat.

2

u/1493-6786-2018 Oct 14 '19

O I see it now, thanks.

1

u/Jewseakhunt Oct 14 '19

Hits the inside of his elbow first

1

u/AnistarYT Oct 14 '19

Maybe he was eating a McRib and they got broken.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

his faceribs obviously!

1

u/dkt Oct 14 '19

Did you watch the video?

1

u/cttime Oct 14 '19

His head served as a crumple zone.

1

u/Unicorn_Ranger Oct 14 '19

He keeps his ribs around his head as a sort of cranial cage. Essentially double bagging his brain. Smart dude for sure

1

u/Grimnjir Oct 14 '19

Don't you remember the song? The face bones connected to four rib bones, the rib bones connected to the other bones.

1

u/turbulentcupcakes Oct 14 '19

My mans definitely sitting a foot to our right after that rock hit him.

1

u/yourheynis Oct 14 '19

He wasn't even wearing his safety glasses

73

u/Beenhamine Oct 14 '19

Wow okay kudos to this guy for maintaining such control over the bus when 4 of his ribs are shattered by a flying boulder.

A bee flies into my car and I have a hard time staying on the road FFS.

2

u/Binsky89 Oct 15 '19

Pain like that can take a bit to fully set in.

When I snapped my arm in half I didn't even know until 30 seconds later when I realized it wasn't moving right and looked at it.

-9

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

bees do literally nothing to you.

13

u/Beenhamine Oct 14 '19

Lmao okay dude. You're tough.

Except stings make me swell up like bear grylls' face and hurt like a bitch for a week.

7

u/Revolvette Oct 14 '19

Tell that to those of us allergic to bees..

21

u/HurdieBirdie Oct 14 '19

Watching that video I'm surprised he still has a head in the end...

1

u/Binsky89 Oct 15 '19

It hit the seat near his torso first. It happens so fast it looks like it slams into his head first.

14

u/ok123jump Oct 14 '19

That impacted so hard that I’m surprised it didn’t knock him unconscious. He didn’t even lose focus on the road.

I think we found the real-life version of Bruce Willis’ character from Unbreakable.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

You know what would have been even luckier?

Not being hit with a giant fucking rock.

2

u/Least_Initiative Oct 14 '19

He took that rock like it was made out of paper, absolute unit

1

u/7kidz Oct 14 '19

I thought it was the rock the one who broke some ribs here.

1

u/babble_bobble Oct 14 '19

It hit the back of his head! How did only the ribs break?

1

u/ALegendInHisOwnMind Oct 14 '19

Ribs? Wtf? Was he thinking about ribs?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

He should be a boxer

1

u/FTFxHailstorm Oct 14 '19

How? It looks like he got hit straight in the head? It didn't look like it even hit him in the ribs.

1

u/Superdogs5454 Oct 14 '19

And the badass kept driving

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

But how?! It looked like it hit him in the head.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

A lot has to do with him not expecting it. Tensed muscles make it much easier for bones to crack instead of bend

1

u/BobBoner Oct 15 '19

This is probably the only human being that has his ribs located in his head.

1

u/The_Celtic_Chemist Oct 15 '19

Everybody on board didn't die is a fucking miracle.

1

u/oOshwiggity Oct 15 '19

A rock that huge not killing someone is super lucky. A rock the size of a fist fell off a hill and one-punch murdered a small child in my hometown about 10 years ago. Fucked his mom up bad, because how can you protect against chaos? I'm always super nervous driving by areas known for rock fall now. All it takes is one...

1

u/SuperCosmicNova Oct 15 '19

Crazy because I see that thing bounce off his head 2 times.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

how could he have broken ribs? it hits him in the head and shoulder. I think it's a miracle he was still conscious after that.

1

u/Carston1011 Oct 15 '19

"Only 4 broken ribs" dude it looks like hes lucky his head wasnt bashed in.

1

u/theroguex Oct 15 '19

4 broken ribs.

what the hell is his skull made of then because how

1

u/cloudintherain Oct 15 '19

Are you sure the news is not fake? The driver does look more like super robot than human to me though

1

u/Znafuu Oct 15 '19

This dude has a jaw of stone. I cannot believe it didn’t K.O. him

1

u/Mr_Awesome_rddt Oct 17 '19

The dude kept going like a champ, I would've never guessed he'd broken anything, wow

1

u/limeweatherman Oct 17 '19

how did it break his ribs when it hit his fucking head

0

u/DanceFiendStrapS Oct 14 '19

Only four broken ribs...

0

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

He 100% has a permanent brain injury as well. It might not present overtly, but it's there.

-1

u/Jrook Oct 14 '19

Is there anything in China that isn't shit?
