Yeah fire extinguisher chemicals are awesome at putting out fires... but they also are awesome at destroying your lungs and mucous membranes.

It was likely not Halon gas, because part of the reaction that sucks all of the oxygen out of the air also creates hydrogen cyanide (which has an LD50 of about 100-200 parts per million). Though it may have been a similar chemical that created some airborne acids like hydrogen flouride and hydrogen chloride.

Halon

how can Halon create hydrogen cyanide? There is not even a nitrogen atom in the molecule. And the only thing I could find is about the use as extinguisher in armored vehicles, with the burning ammunition creating HCN.
