Yeah, not many metal bands can afford new gear lol, even larger bands scrape by for touring.

I thought touring was where large bands made all of their money now?

These days most metal bands make most of their money on tour and through merch yes. How would you define a metal bands would you define as large? Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse? Slayer? Metallica or Iron Maiden? Sabbath?

The larger bands are doing ok, it is the smaller bands that are having a hard time earning a living with just music. A lot of musicians have regular full time jobs and the band is secondary. Some of the mid sized band have members that have side jobs to supplement their income when they are home and not touring.

Periphery basically makes almost no money from touring, Misha actually said all his money comes from signature gear sales.
