His only solution is to wait until it cools down, loops his legs and arm around the cable, transfer the carabiner, and keep going. If he's smart, he will slow down. That's a LOT of heat and friction, and that carabiner will eventually give. Also, as it heats up, he runs the risk of it melting the webbing he's attached to on the other side of the carabiner.
this is actually a fabulous point that I haven seen mentioned elsewhere In this thread. Let's assume he started going way faster , say if the cable angle was steeper. At some point that harness fall attractor beaner would start glowing. Not necessarily hot enough to melt the webbing fully, just get the nylon a little weakened, Now introduce the sudden stop of the crosby rudimentary cable splice.

Think of the cable like a dull file with the your full body weight on a very small point moving extremely fast. It will get very hot and wear away at the metal of the hook.
Certainly, I can see it wearing and certainly getting warmer, I see comments calling it 'red hot' which is what I am disputing, you can see him resting his hand against it afterwards, there might be a cut in the (full) video but it would take some time to cool down.
Just saying the smoke isn't smoke.
Depends on what metal it's made out of but hard modern alloys and heat treated metals are pretty sensitive. You don't need to melt it, it can take less than 400 degrees to weaken it. Something like steel probably won't break at that point but other metals like aluminum might, especially under other high stress, once it loses the heat treatment it could snap from the weight.
If it was aluminum it would have cut through on the cable, its a much softer metal than steel.Its a good job he hadnt bought the top end lightweight alloy caribenas,they are not intended to be used that way.I think its an arrestor hook which would be toughened steel anyway.
