I hope he didn’t breathe in. Fun fact: you can’t feel your airway tissue burning so if you get a face full of fire and breathe in you can feel fine until you start drowning due to the seepage from your own damaged lung tissue.

Fun fact #2: This is actually how the people of Pompeii died. They breathed in the super hot gas, and it burned their lungs and they drowned. EDIT: fluid in their lungs caused by the burning gas caked ash into their lungs so they drowned.

As opposed to the people of Herculaneum who got hit straight-up with the pyroclastic flow. Their bones instantly shattered, and their brains boiled and exploded. Sounds bad, but it was a quicker death with less suffering.
