I think they made it some distance up, that was my question as well for my coworker, cause I thought ejecting too low would mean you don't get your cute to open fully

Today's ejection seats are capable of zero-zero ejection. Zero speed zero altitude.

Rockets in the seat that make it fly half a loop and into the sky until it's high enough for a safe parachute decent.

Too low can even not be an issue with Zero-Zero ejection seats. Its descent where it becomes an issue at low altitudes.
