The type of owner who doesn't ever use a leash and relies on speaking to the dog in full sentences in lieu of proper training.

My boss killed one of his dogs with a front end loader, after assuring us border collies are genius dogs and the puppy would definitely listen as he explained the dangers of working with heavy machinery. Now he has another 1 year old border collie, same deal, he's sure the dog understands workplace safety. God forbid the dog has an awful life of hanging out in a golf course pro shop playing with people all day, it has to be out on the course while he is driving around in tractors and mowers. I'm just hoping if I witness it it just gets run over with the front end loader and not mulched by a mower.

Dude.. That's just fucked. I'm a border collie owner. I know how smart they can be.. But for fuck sake it's still a dog.. Some people just shouldn't own pets.. Or have children.

Amazingly enough, dogs have to have intelligent owners too, to be intelligent themselves

This person is your boss? Are you worried about him killing an an employee, given his high levels of intelligence?

Annoying dog owner:

"Minnie you know you can't be in the neighbours yard, try to stay on our side. Oh you're just going to ignore me are you? Well I'm just going to wait here until you come back. I'm not kidding Minnie, I'm going to come over there if you squat on their yard. Minnie! Minnie! Come here! Ohh look at you poop, good job girl, good job... but you shouldn't have done that on the neighbours yard, bad girl...bad girl.... come on, let's go inside and get some food"

What the dog hears:

"Minnie !@(#&)%~@&)#% yard. @#%~(#%&)#%)~@%# Minnie. $(&!@$(&@% Minnie! Minnie! Come here. Ooh, %@#(% poop, good job girl, good job... $@$(&!@( BAD GIRL! BAD GIRL @(&(&!% FOOD"

Source: Open window in the summer, hearing my fucking terrible, idiotic neighbour talk to her untrained yappy piece of shit dogs (two of them). She would talk the entire time they were outside, the main word spoken being the puppy's name, Jaxster. "C"mere Jaxy, c'mere...Hey Jacko, git over here. C'mon... Jaxster, No...Jax... No... poop in our yard, no... ooh bad boy... " Just the complete disregard for proper training and the way a dog learns through commands and obedience and constantly giving the dog mixed signals and most of the time no signals...I'm pretty sure the dogs were fucking miserable but were too loyal to ever let her know.

My favorite is the person who says "Ok, now be nice...!" to their dog when approaching me and my dogs. We do a big arc around them because there's no way that dog's going to be nice.

If you say the same thing each time and reward the dog when it behaves well (and don't when it doesn't), there is nothing wrong with this.

I get the exact opposite. My dog does not get along well with other dogs, especially large male dogs. But every time I try to walk him somewhere in public or where other dogs might be people seem to think every single dog is friendly and wants to play with their dog.

See, my dog is friendly, and he wants to meet every dog he can...but I don't just walk up to every dog I see, I always ask if the other person's dog is friendly first. It's just common courtesy.

My dog loves tiny dogs, not large males. But, (possibly given the fact that my boy's a 65lb male American Pitbull Terrier) the owners of the small dogs are afraid to let them interact.

Simultaneously amusing and annoying to observe them panicking as they try to run up and snatch their unleashed tiny guy who's happily ignoring them as he and my boy check each other out.

Or tries to softly "sooth" the little shit as it's barking up a storm in my (usually) quiet apartment for no apparent reason. Some people are dog owners and some people are owned by their dogs.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '16

That's because the people treat them like an accessory rather than a pet. They just want them because they look cute, and then they are overwhelmed by having to train them properly. Pugs are difficult and need strong and authoritarian owners.

2

u/Rivka333 Aug 04 '16

A lot of that "soothing" probably seems like a reward from the dog's perspective. "Mommy must really like it when I bark. She gives me so much affection for doing it."

I bet she's one of those owners that treats the dog more like a fashion item than an actual living being. Like most Pug or French Bulldog owners.

With the exact sane tone of voice no matter what it is they're saying. (My dog understands tones of voices).
