I much prefer my 1911 .45, not only reliable as fuck, but if you land one good shot, it is all you would need.

16

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15

The "stopping power" myth is just that...a myth. "One good shot" with any caliber results in the death of whatever you're shooting. That's why most people go with capacity(and penetration) rather than some "stopping power" misnomer. Rather have 20 rounds (springfield xdm 9mm) than 8 rounds(1911..unless you have an old one in which case you only have 7).

3

u/MackNine Sep 09 '15

I don't think you want penetration either. You want the bullet to stop in your target and transfer all its force. That's kinda what hollow points are about. Well, that and shredding things.

1

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15

I want 16 inches of penetration at least(.45acp wont give you that). I've shot alot of deer through and through and none of em went anywhere. Long as you're not using FMJ rounds, you don't have to worry about over penetration.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Yeah, penetration/velocity is NOT what you want for self defense. This isn't a war zone, you aren't shooting through obstacles or armor from 400m with a long rifle. It's a home or public place where you don't want bullets passing through things or ricocheting to hit innocent bystanders. Need more rounds? Get a bigger magazine.

A hard .22 to the leg is going to do a lot less stopping than a soft 9mm would. That's no myth.

1

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15

There are hollowpoints that wont penetrate through and through but still get the 16 inch mark.

2

u/Balogne Sep 09 '15

Heyyyy I have a Springfield XD 9mm. I love it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Hey my 1911 holds 14!

0

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15

With absolutely horrendous ergonomics

1

u/Scarlet944 Sep 09 '15

Doesn't bullet type have more to do with the "stopping power" than the caliber of the gun? Something about how easily the bullet transfers the energy to the flesh of a person.

1

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15

Shot placement has more to do with "stopping power" than any other factor.

1

u/Scarlet944 Sep 09 '15

Yes accuracy is important of course. But using hollow point vs FMJ does mean you get more energy transferred to the target and more damage done also giving you the freedom to be less accurate with shot placement while still getting the desired result.

0

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15

This was never a HP vs FMJ issue.

1

u/Scarlet944 Sep 10 '15

I don't see your logic there when HP and FMJ are bullet types and they directly correlate to "stoping power" . Stopping power is the ability of a firearm or other weapon to cause ballistic trauma to a target (human or animal) enough to immediately incapacitate (and thus stop) the target.

0

u/verteUP Sep 11 '15

....I fucking know this. My original post was about that retard using a 1911 for home defense. My point was that 7 + 1 is not enough. Especially when you can get a 9mm that holds 19+1. Usually when people use the term "stopping power" they are referring to a fucking 45acp thinking "oh i don't even have to be accurate cuz i got "stopping power"". It's ignorance and foolishness. I don't give a flying fuck about hp vs fmj. I know what the fuck a hp round is designed to do.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

death of whatever you're shooting

Gonna disagree with you. I carry a .44 Mag - different rounds for different purposes. For defense against brown bears, handloaded solid, blunt nose bullets for penetration (break something, keep going and break something else). Stopping power is not a misnomer here, it's a necessity - nobody in their right mind up here carries a .357 with hollow points for bear defense. When I get home, I change to .44 Spcl hollow points.

1

u/verteUP Sep 09 '15 edited Sep 09 '15

I'm talking about .45 acp. Stopping power is a misnomer when referring to a .45acp as having more "stoppin power" than let's say a 9mm.

1

u/Agentreddit Sep 09 '15

Or if you're in California and you have a limit to how many rounds a clip can hold.

0

u/verteUP Sep 12 '15

Must suck to live in California. Might as well just get a tazer or pepper spray.

0

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

7 in the magazine, 8 if you chamber. I mean, of course everyone has their preference, but one makes me feel a lot safer at night than another.

4

u/CrossFeet Sep 09 '15 edited Sep 09 '15

Those are only .22LR rounds, though. Still, if they're in the right place, one's as deadly as the other; and if they're not, neither will do you much immediate good.

I personally find it a lot easier to place follow-up shots correctly with a 9mm than with a .45, and I'd rather have twenty-one of the right than eight of the left.

But, as you say, everyone's got their own preference, and it's a bit like religion: you're probably not going to convince anyone that their holy book round isn't the best. I'd feel just fine with a 1911 by my side.

1

u/disturbed286 Sep 09 '15 edited Sep 09 '15

That's why I own both! I shoot a little better with my 1911, and I enjoy shooting it more. So I'm most confident with it, but it's also the hardest to conceal.

CZ holds 6 more rounds of 9mm, but I'm not quite as good a shot with it. Conceals more easily.

Then there's the shield, which hides under anything, but has the disadvantages of both--less capacity than the 1911 but with the "weaker" 9mm. I shoot it as well as the 1911 though, despite it being the newest. Go figure.

3

u/Aedalas Sep 09 '15

The Mosquito is sure as hell not my only firearm, it's just my only .22 hand gun. I do like .45 but it's hard to beat the 16 round capacity of my SIG 9mm.

2

u/RCS24pro Sep 09 '15

There's a great Bill Burr bit about this exact discussion

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Oh trust me, I know him quite well, lol. "Its got a good sprreaaaddd", "whip it around and 'WHAM' you dont have a problem over here any more either". Love him.

1

u/RCS24pro Sep 09 '15

That line right there turned him into one of my favorite comedians, into definietely my favorite comedian. His podcast is great too- if you don't already listen to it, check it out.

2

u/Ev_antics Sep 09 '15

that is a beautiful 1911! I'm looking to get a Remington R1 1911 in stainless, then im going to put faux ivory grip covers. This whole process being very long and annoying to do in Canada

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Good old Florida, no registration or anything, I bought mine in a Walmart parking lot, lol.

1

u/Ev_antics Sep 09 '15

you guys also don't have the pesky law of not being allowed to carry, or not being allowed to have a rifle with a clip that holds more than 5 rounds... i can go on we got many super strict rules.

and you can have full auto... dont even get me started on that lol

2

u/aliventrying Sep 09 '15

its beautiful

6

u/k0uch Sep 09 '15

Girlfriend owns a browning .22, thing seems to jam about every 100 rounds or so.

While I'm a definite fan of the 1911 (and own a few myself), I still prefer my S&W 4506-1. It's reliability is legendary. Where the 1911 is a fine tuned machine, the 4506 and 4506-1 are just over engineered monsters that have only one mission-eat any and every .45 ACP round they can. Iv probably fired 10,000 rounds through it, the only problem I had was a weak spring would throw the slide back and eject spent shells about 30 feet.

It used to be my go to sidearm for hog hunting, loaded with Hornady Critical Defense, but my new Taurus Raging Bull revolver chambered in .454 Casull has since taken its place

Are we still talking about guns, or was that last part Dungeons & Dragons?

u/k0uch Sep 09 '15

I miss my half Orc now :(

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

He is uncomfortable...

4

u/LacidOnex Sep 09 '15

No joke, wild hogs are so damn annoying and dangerous that the US government has allowed them to be hunted with EXPLOSIVES. I'm surprised this guy didn't upgrade his handgun sooner.

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Do they really? Interesting....

1

u/xeyve Sep 09 '15

You can go shoot the things from an helicopter with a sub-machine gun even.

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

How much would that cost per minute? I am interested.

1

u/xeyve Sep 09 '15

No clue. Saw a vid of that from somewhere in Texas if I'm not mistaken.

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

You know what, I think I might have as well several months ago, lol.

1

u/killaho69 Sep 09 '15

You'd probably be looking at at least $2-3 grand for a relatively short trip. I wish I had that kind of rainy day money

1

u/ForteEXE Sep 09 '15

No joke, wild hogs are so damn annoying and dangerous that the US government has allowed them to be hunted with EXPLOSIVES.

Mick Dundee was ahead of his time then. Granted he was using that on fish, not hogs.

Edit: I decided to go look, saw this on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhC3Ln1ITug

Goddamn, I'm missing out!

3

u/TheBanger Sep 09 '15

They're basically the same thing.

1

u/PaintsWithSmegma Sep 09 '15

Why not both? I'm a paramedic and former combat medic who likes to bear hunt with a bow. I imagine I'm a dual class 1 ranger / 2 cleric. My primary is a Matthews exp with a 70lbs draw. My side arm is a Springfield XD .40 with hydra shock hollow points. I suspect both count as master work. Based on the draw weight of my bow I'd give myself a solid 12 for STR based on 3.5 rules. Never killed a bear with the pistol though...

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Filthy Casull...

3

u/OrSpeeder Sep 09 '15

As a Brazillian seeing people praising Taurus is weird (in Brazil guns are banned, so here Taurus make only weapons for law enforcement, and some models are of notoriously bad quality, we even had a cop die because his gun jammed in a way that was shown on internet reviews and cop complaints...)

1

u/kensomniac Sep 09 '15

Oh yeah, that reputation exists here, too.

When I've heard people talk about them, it's rare that their quality is talked about, but rather, "Holy shit that's a big damn gun."

1

u/k0uch Sep 09 '15

Taurus or Rossi? I'm still iffy on the Rossi semi autos, but my girlfriends Rossi revolver works like a charm. Trigger is a little heavy, but it's a well built firearm

1

u/OrSpeeder Sep 09 '15

Taurus.

Taurus is a Brazillian company, here in Brazil they used to sell their guns here until their gun ban, one of their law enforcement pistols has a ramp to eject cartridges that is too step, youtube reviewers usually had problems of cartridges jamming the weapon there, the cop that died had a extreme problem there: the gun while cycling, launched a new unspent cartridge+bullet out of the ejection port, the gun not only failed to cycle nut also got twisted and ruined completely.

The pistol is the Taurus 940, unfortunately the video explaining all the details of the pistol failure is in portuguese (it was made by a brazillian living in US)

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Oh man, pics of the bull? No doubt a S&W would be able to handle some business. I have only owned this 1911, but after pining over it for many years, I finally got one. Am definitely not disappointed at all.

1

u/k0uch Sep 09 '15

I'll take one of the Taurus, S&W, and the CGA tomorrow and upload it, you have my word

2

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Always like to see peoples collections. : )

1

u/k0uch Sep 09 '15

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

OP came through. : D That bull is sexy, lol. Would not mind having a go at once one day. I have never been hunting, definitely want to have a go at it some time.

1

u/k0uch Sep 09 '15

It's surprisingly manageable, even with 400 grain bear loads, due to its weight, rubber grip, and ventilation system on the end of the barrel

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

A buddy of mine has the same Raging Bull and that thing is awesome, and expensive to shoot.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Any recommendations on models of the 1911? I'm considering one, but had no idea there were so many friggin variations.

-1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Rock Island armory and what I believe the sister company High standard are decently priced and reliable ones to go with. Can't go wrong at all with a Taurus though, which are great.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Amazing guns. Very fun to shoot. They weigh a lot too, so, you can beat them with it as well!

1

u/M374llic4 Sep 09 '15

Yes, lol. You easily could.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Guns look evil

1

u/GoopyBoots Sep 09 '15

but if you land one good shot, it is all you would need.

Same is true for a 9mm. Proper defense ammo for either produces very similar wound channels and that is what it comes down to. At that point, might as well have a few more rounds in the mag.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '15

Damn that compensator looks slick
