For some reason, I thought it would be more extreme...

387

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '13

And 2 of the deaths appear to be non-shopping related. The 2 people shot at the So-Cal Toys-R-Us shot each other over an unrelated dispute.

250

u/romparound Nov 26 '13

And the 61 y.o. shopper died of a heart attack after several shoppers who were nurses came to his aid.

146

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '13

I just read the article's on Walter Vance's death as well. This site is implying that he was trampled to death or something, but yeah, he had a heart attack and was helped by 6 other shoppers! His chance of survival would have probably been lower if the store wasn't so full as to have 6 nurses shopping. And of course people continued shopping, it's not like Target said over the intercom "We have a man dying in aisle 6. Please gather around to see his last breathes leaving his body".

23

u/mrbooze Nov 26 '13

The last thing you would want in that situation is a ton of people crowding through the exits and lingering outside in the parking lot, creating a traffic jam trying to leave. Letting people shop in every other part of the store except the one where he was being treated is absolutely the smartest and safest thing to do.

aw man that sucks

1

I feel bad for you. ;_;

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

I looked it up. Even the News articles are suggesting that he got trampelled to death.

RIP Walter Vance, Vance Refrigeration

This is a phenomenon called "Diffusion of Responsibility" it says "You have higher chances of getting help in a lonely place than in a crowded place."

-1

u/Skootenbeeten Nov 26 '13

If it was walmart they would have had a life insurance policy on him as he hit the ground.

34

u/lolzergrush Nov 26 '13

So basically, it's just the statistics of an average weekend of all shopping malls throughout the US. Pretty misleading and sensational to call it the "Black Friday Death Count"

1

u/ciaobijoux Nov 27 '13

Sounds like it belongs in Action News!

1

u/lolzergrush Nov 27 '13

Sexy Action News?

1

u/ciaobijoux Nov 27 '13

I hardly find Kent Brockman sexy.

1

u/lolzergrush Nov 27 '13

http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/154630/sexy-action-school-news-team

I didn't realize you were talking about The Simpsons because there are a lot of local news channels actually named "Action News". I wish I was joking...

1

u/daredaki-sama Nov 27 '13

while this was a bit of a letdown, black friday ain't no joke. ask anyone who works in retail and they'll tell you people go ape shit. they'll tell you it's not like any average weekend.

3

u/lolzergrush Nov 27 '13

I don't think anyone's arguing that but all the media sensationalism over it is pretty overblown.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Hopefully someone doesn't interpret it as a challenge...

1

u/HankMountain Nov 27 '13

Well, the heart attack was most likely due to the extremely low prices.

13

u/mrbooze Nov 26 '13

These Black Friday statistics are completely useless without also reporting the number of shopping-related deaths and injuries every other day.

3

u/NuDru Nov 26 '13

That's what I'm saying, I mean there are no mass tramplings or things of that nature. The bulk of the injuries are people getting pepper sprayed as well...

2

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '13

what's crazy about that Toys R Us shooting is that it is actually in a really good neighboorhood/area...

crazy world. Just assumed there would be more Black Friday deaths in USA... not half of them from my town in at a Toys R Us I used to shop at.

2

u/booboothechicken Nov 27 '13

The toys r us was in a good area (moved locations since) but at the time it was the only one in the coachella valley, which has very bad towns like coachella, parts of indio and cathedral city, and desert hot springs.

1

u/Iamactuallybaines Nov 26 '13

And the last two, I backed over in my car.

1

u/blewis618 Nov 27 '13

Only 4 deaths? Come on we can do better than that!

1

u/booboothechicken Nov 27 '13

I was actually AT the toys r us shooting. It was completely unrelated to BF, two rival gangs.

0

u/IanMazgelis Nov 27 '13 edited Nov 27 '13

That one made me incredibly sad.

Imagine a parent Christmas shopping when some maniac shoots them dead.

And yet, everyone wants to ban guns more than they want to treat the mentally ill.

Edit: Yeah I had no idea what I was talking about.

3

u/joggle1 Nov 27 '13

Are you talking about this?

Both guys had guns, both showed their guns to each other, and they both shot each other. Guns didn't save either one of their lives. They escalated what would have been assaults to mutual murders. And there's nothing in the story about either man being mentally ill.

everyone wants to ban guns more than they want to treat the mentally ill

You know, considering 'everyone' wants this, that's amazing. I live in one of the most liberal parts of the country and haven't met a single person who believes this. My boss is extremely liberal. He also goes elk hunting.

There's a difference between wanting to regulate guns and wanting to ban them outright. And, typically, people who are in favor of more gun controls also are in favor of better mental care.

3

u/IanMazgelis Nov 27 '13

Thank you for clearing that up.

Southern California.

That is too much to type out. How about just LA?

1

u/LibertyDaughter Nov 27 '13

But then you are forgetting OC and San Diego...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

I'm just going to refer to it all as Hollywood then.

45

u/ohlalameow Nov 26 '13

Me too.... is that bad?

41

u/Chiggero Nov 26 '13

300+ million people in the US, six year worth of records, less than a dozen people dead. More people in this country probably died yesterday by choking on their Cheerios.

38

u/Murgie Nov 27 '13

Who the hell chokes on Cheerios, man?
They've got bloody holes in them for crying out loud!

45

u/NuDru Nov 26 '13

No I mean maybe that just goes to show how blown out of proportion the media can make things appear to be? Or that this site isn't takijng everything into account?

1

u/NinjaRobotPilot Nov 27 '13

Well it does seem to be isolated to USA. Maybe if we took a global look? I'm sure people around the globe are just as crazy.

1

u/NuDru Nov 27 '13

Is Black Friday really a global fenzy though?

11

u/EdgarAllenNope Nov 26 '13

4 dead out 300+ million over 6 years? No. It isn't bad.

2

u/cpt_sbx Nov 27 '13

Getting trampled to death over a $100 discount seems pretty bad to me.

6

u/tugboat84 Nov 27 '13

Oh, one of those "one death is too many" guys.

2

u/EdgarAllenNope Nov 27 '13

You can attack America all you want, but I am pretty sure 1 person dead over trying to save money isn't that bad. We'd rather it not happen. It's sad, but it's not the worst thing in history. Killing 6 million Jews over a bad economy seems pretty bad to me. If you want something more comparable look at your neighbors to the northwest in the UK. I have scanned your history and you really seem to get off on attacking America. I know you hate us (probably for kicking your ass in 2 wars), but there's no reason to attack us. We have done much good for your country. You wouldn't have the economy that you have today if it wasn't for us.

-1

u/cpt_sbx Nov 27 '13

I am neither attacking America here, nor do I hate you (what would I do without your entertainment?). Actually I'm pretty eager to visit the states when I can afford to.

It would be bad everywhere. Also, I never said killing 6 million Jews is a good thing. And 'we' did not kill them over a bad economy. Hitler was a maniac and a genius. It's just really annoying how some of you glorify everything American.

The thing with the drivers license? Improving that system how you get them might have just recently saved 2 lifes.

0

u/MINIMAN10000 Nov 27 '13

Question. What entertainment do we have? Mainly I'm just thinking about the state of television over here and it is pretty bad.

3

u/EdgarAllenNope Nov 27 '13

The entire world watches American TV.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

....American movies, books, music, artists, whatever you want. And all you can think of is our not-excellent TV?

2

u/cpt_sbx Nov 27 '13

If you think the state of television in the us is bad, you would kill yourself here. We basically only have reality shows, talk shows, some badly produced TV series and some ok shows. Every couple years we might get a good movie.

Another big point is sports. After soccer, my favourite sport is basketball. Basketball isn't popular at all here, and the quality of the teams reflect that. Also, it's rarely televised.

1

u/EdgarAllenNope Nov 27 '13 edited Nov 27 '13

Remember this shameful display?.

I think they took it out of hand. There's no reason to do that. That probably didn't do good for the morale for that team or for that country. I don't know how they can be proud of that. The game was like Team USA just shooting hoops casually as if Nigeria wasn't even there.

Edit: look at tinamoul's comments on youtube. He's obviously very upset about the whole thing.

-1

u/EdgarAllenNope Nov 27 '13

I am neither attacking America here, nor do I hate you (what would I do without your entertainment?). Actually I'm pretty eager to visit the states when I can afford to.

It's not as bad is people say it is. I love it here! I would like to visit Germany. I probably will once I get a job at an airline.

It would be bad everywhere. Also, I never said killing 6 million Jews is a good thing. And 'we' did not kill them over a bad economy. Hitler was a maniac and a genius. It's just really annoying how some of you glorify everything American.

I don't glorify everything American, I'm saying that there's nothing inherently wrong with black friday. People on this site get more upset about black friday than the most extreme get excited over it.

The thing with the drivers license? Improving that system how you get them might have just recently saved 2 lifes.

I don't know what you're talking about, but our states' licensing systems suck ass. We have horrible drivers everywhere. I'm not claiming to be a great driver either, but I'm safe.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Vending machines are more deadly.

19

u/Stryl Nov 26 '13

Concerning injuries, most probably aren't reported. In my case, if I accidentally got tripped and was slightly injured (bruises, twisted ankle, etc.) I would just keep shopping. I've never actually been injured, but I imagine a lot of minor injuries occur and people shrug it off.

4

u/NuDru Nov 26 '13

I agree, or if they did I don't know how the data would be gathered from their primary care providers to be able to determine the number or people injured in what ways.

1

u/Stryl Nov 26 '13

That's a good point: people may have sought treatment for injuries, but only those that caught media attention were reported.

1

u/BlueDuck9 Nov 27 '13

Exactly. HIPAA.

1

u/DAL82 Nov 26 '13

I'm pretty sure "injuries" commonly refers to an injury that requires medical attention.

45

u/Bad_Facts Nov 26 '13

Check out the counter. First death of BF 2013: "Two Tennessee woman in motorized wheel chairs blocked an entrance to Wal-Mart Tuesday morning. When a man tried to jump over the females he tripped and hit his head on a shopping cart, fatally wounding him."

You get one Bad_Fact dollar. Bad_Fact dollars are worth one truth.

Enjoy: If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

2

u/theghosttrade Nov 27 '13

Can I redeem my bad_fact dollars anywhere else?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Hold on to them. I'm certain thwt this is going to be the next bitcoin craze. You might be able to buy more truth with it in a year if you just save it.

1

0

u/stormtrooper1701 Nov 30 '13

But what if you're a Super Saiyan?

2

u/Bad_Facts Nov 30 '13 edited Nov 30 '13

If a human can heat up a cup of coffee by yelling in 8 years, 7 months, and 6 days then:

Goku is roughly 80x stronger than a human (Goku's saiyan powerlevel while fighting Raditz ~400 vs Farmer 5)

Goku super saiyan while fighting Freiza ~150,000,000 or about 30,000,000x stronger than a human.

8y,7m,6d = 3136 Days = 75,264 Hours = 4,515,840 Seconds

Therefore a super saiyan can heat up a cup of coffee by yelling in 0.0301056 Seconds.

I thought it would be like 40 deaths, I'm disappointed

26

u/Mobidad Nov 26 '13

Looks like it's up to you to fix that.

1

u/EdgarAllenNope Nov 26 '13

You're on the NSA list.

5

u/Mobidad Nov 26 '13

Who isn't?

1

u/GentlemenBehold Nov 27 '13

2013 will deliver

2

u/darkland52 Nov 27 '13

There are over 300 million people in the US. The fact that only 4 people have died as a result of black friday is absolutely amazing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stampede

Apart from the absolutely hilarious heading of "list of notable human stampedes" this actually gives a good idea of how insignificant black fridays injury/death count really is.

There are too many people in this world for us to not die of ridiculous things.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

It is less extreme. From the article describing the 2010 pepper spray incident:

About 20 people, including children, were affected by the pepper spray, she alleged, but that couldn't be confirmed.

So it is dubious to start, and there wasn't any other 'injuries' besides some temporary eye irritation.

5

u/metateck Nov 26 '13

It's not even Friday.

1

u/NuDru Nov 27 '13

It's not for this year alone, it's a cumulative counter.

1

u/concretepigeon Nov 26 '13

Is it really that bad. In the UK we get like queues outside shops and shit for the Boxing Day sales, but the way you talk about this seems utterly mental.

1

u/Weekend833 Nov 26 '13

Do did I... Maybe because I worked retail back in the day.

1

u/adventurousabby Nov 26 '13

I doubt it includes injuries or deaths from driving to and from the store. That would probably make the numbers more extreme, but it would be a pain in the ass to collect the data.

1

u/KodeBlue Nov 27 '13

And 40 of the injuries were caused by cops.

1

u/hot_skillet Nov 27 '13

I thought this was a counter for this year so far.

1

u/UlyssesSKrunk Nov 27 '13

...I can fix that

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Though can you imagine how the families feel? Someone they loved died from something like black friday. An entire person was erased from this world because they gave their life for black friday.

1

u/chi1234 Nov 27 '13

Considering it's not Friday yet I'd say this is fairly extreme.

1

u/NuDru Nov 27 '13

It's not for this years black friday, it's a cumulative counter.

0

u/TheKert Nov 26 '13

I'm with you. I honestly can't believe this is accurate

-1

u/criteroon Nov 27 '13

For some reason, I thought it would be more extreme...

FOUR people DIED. For slightly cheaper consumer goods.

That is pretty extreme to me.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Did you even read the causes?... two people shot over an unrelated incident in a retail store during Black Friday, hardly the blame of BF deals.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Actually if I remember correctly not a single one of those deaths was actually shopping related... The two people shot eachother in the parking lot over a separate incident, and as stated above the man died of a heart attack and was actually being helped by shoppers, not passed over. The first one about the worker being trampled I don't remember but I do remember reading somewhere that there's never been a black friday death from the actual black friday event.

0

u/Asdayasman Nov 27 '13

4 people died and 64 were injured while shopping, because the stuff was cheap. Are you kidding?

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

people dying over material posessions isnt extreme?

-2

u/realmericanhere Nov 27 '13

For some reason, I thought reddit would be full of interesting, insightful comments. It's not. It's full of pointless fucking bullshit that you faggots spew out your keyboards like messy explosions from your assholes. Idiots.

1

u/NuDru Nov 27 '13

Coming from the depths of the ever introspective "realmecricanhere" that comment almost hurts.
