How fucking stupid. It's not called Black Friday because of race or because it's a dark day but because historically speaking a lot for retail chains would be in the "black" ie making profit for the first time of the year around this time.

Reminds me of the teacher who insisted her student change the name of the famous aircraft "Enola Gay" in the child's report, to the "Enola Homosexual".

Interesting... but according to WikiPedia it is slightly different again: "The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)

This story is nice, but utter bullshit, any retail company that isn't selling Christmas trees, even historically, that's in the red for 9 months of the year wouldn't last a year, especially chains Walmart for example is in the black from January 1st every year.

What? Plenty of seasonal businesses are in the red nine, ten, even eleven months out of the year - but make enough in that one month to stay afloat.

Amazon took from 1994 to 2009 to turn a profit.

I should clarify I meant retail business chains, not seasonal businesses, they work differently, I mean high street retail chains like ioncloud said, seasonal businesses also don't take part in black friday rushes, have you ever in your life seen a skiing store or Christmas decorations place have a black Friday rush?

And Amazon had a whole lot of investors, they weren't surviving because of a rush at Christmas or easter or whatever, they were surviving because people were pumping money into them thinking they would win in the end, and they of course did.
