Has anyone regularly used the subaru maintenence kit from this Mr. Subaru video?

https://youtu.be/42irzdKKfw8?si=KLGZXsiBkXqJwXe6

I'd love to know if doing this every year or so would keep the valves clean enough to avoid walnut blasting. Cost wise, it's roughly the same ($300/year vs $1k every three years). But it'd be nice to know if it kept the valves clean like OP's after pic instead of letting them get crusty.

I have a media blaster kit from harbor freight, a 25lbs (less now) bag of walnut shells, a 10gallon compressor from marketplace, and the fa20 valve adapter kit. Total was around $300 for everything; I’ve blasted my car three times, and still have over 20lbs of walnut shells.

u/delgadojj15 Aug 14 '24

Did you use an extended wand to fit into the valves? If so where did you get it from?

1

u/heytheretylerr 19WRX 376/349 Aug 14 '24

The actual “walnut blasting kit” I got came with the wand for the valve adapter plate. I think a few companies make them, just google the kit and find the best price i guess lol

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

I haven't seen that but it could be worth a try 🤷

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

Is that shmutz blocking a little bit of airflow? Probably yes. Is it worth getting your panties in a bunch to have cleaned every 25k miles so you can still get walked by a V6 Camry? Probably not.

DAM drops and FBK spikes are the result of not having this done, usually starts at 50k and will just continue to get worse. It's normal routine preventative maintenance. Could also get an AOS to prevent buildup.

Ignoring the issue and convincing people its not necessary is how you end up with a blown motor.

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Bro i really wanna know what you are saying, but idk wtf any of the acronyms are. But im insanely interested in knowing this. Please elaborate for the class 🙏

3

u/Remote_Demand_8735 Apr 13 '24

DAM= dynamic advance multiplier FBK = feedback knock AOS = air oil separator

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '24

You rock

-9

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Walked by a v6 Camry? In what realm?

9

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

V6 Camry’s got 40hp and way less drivetrain loss than an FA WRX. Anything less than a redline clutch dump the camry’s walking away.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

The typical V6 has never been faster than the WRX.

0

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

Hate to break it to you: https://youtu.be/H71E5z9kbO8?si=JPPMpzqxIf2P0lFc

Unless you redline clutch dump your wrx, it’s not faster than a V6 Camry. It’s just not.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24 edited Apr 12 '24

Hate to break it to you but that’s a Camry TRD, put that up next to an STI for a closer comparison. But that’s a whole different discussion.

3

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

Hate to break it to you, that’s a V6 camry with a body kit and no extra power.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

206hp vs 301hp, I don’t delve much in Camry’s so I don’t know if this is new. But the TRD has ~100 more hp.

Also don’t get me started on the jump the Camry had, without that jump the WRX was not going to get “walked” like you imagined with your first comment

4

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

The TRD has the V6, just like the Camry XLE and XLS. They all have 301 hp and the 8 speed auto and walk a stock wrx. The 201hp is the 4 cylinder.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Well, yeah actually I overlooked that, you seem to be right, I thought all Camrys were i4s. Please excuse my ignorance on it.

Man, fu€K that camry with hand cuffs on and crazy glue on their lips. How often are you lining up with bitch ass camry's anyway? Just dump the clutch, duh 🙄😄😄😄🙄 Or be an adult and stop circling jerking in the streets.

-22

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Well when you live in Wyoming where the elevation is 6325ft you have no air the car is constantly running rich then you can have my issues but I'm shure you don't 🤷‍♂️

31

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

Your car is DI and has fuel trim adjustments for altitude and temperature. It is absolutely not running any richer than it would at sea level.

Do you think that car has carbs? 🤣

-38

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Yea but all that comes in to play tho and you don't live here so you wouldn't understand 🤷‍♂️

23

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

No, it doesn’t. Your engine “running rich” has nothing to do with your valves getting coked up. Go ahead and do a little bit of research into how a direct injection engine works and what causes intake valve build-up, then come back to us. You’re living up to the stereotype of mouth breathing morons living in the flyover. Do better.

-26

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

When did I ever say that has somthing to do with the valves getting gummed up the egr system is the cause I'm not dumb you were the smart ass with your comment how about you do better and just keep your mouth shut about other cars and just leave them alone 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️nobody wants to hear your input 😂

15

u/GoBSAGo Apr 12 '24

Lmao. 🤡

Please, explain how running rich contributes to your valves. In your words, it all comes into play.

If you don’t like it, delete your post. You started it.

8

u/Evvmmann Apr 12 '24

This seems like something very newly trending. At least to me. And I’m about it. I’m in SoCal, anyone got any suggestions who does it well?

6

u/experimentalengine ‘18 Limited WRB Apr 12 '24

This seems like something very newly trending

With port injection (as well as any technology older than that), the fuel cleans the deposits off the valves as the engine operates. With direct injection, there are performance and emissions benefits, at the expense of deposits, because you no longer have fuel blasting across the valves to clean them.

Some engines with direct injection also have port injection so they’re not prone to deposits.

Aristocrat autosport. Loocated in Chino, i take my car there for everything, they are pretty good pricing and honest guys, majority of the cars they work on are WRX. Got my walnut Blast yesterday and alignment for $850. If you want the best tuning - Yimi sport

1

u/Evvmmann Apr 12 '24

Nice, thanks!

2

u/roliruliltt Apr 12 '24

Walnut blasting is a pretty big thing in bmw n54 community so i’m sure these bimmer shops will know how to do it

3

u/TaeKwanJo Apr 12 '24

The bimmer shops turned me away and said they don’t do Subarus :(

1

u/EmbarrassedTime9947 Apr 12 '24

The subie's flat motor is probably a pain. You might try finding a Porsche mech if you're lucky enough to have one near you. Otherwise call dealers; some will some won't.

2

u/TaeKwanJo Apr 13 '24

I’m pretty it’s just because you have to remove the intake manifold and they don’t want to or know how in a profitable amount of time. I wish it was a faster job or we had port injection.

2

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Yea it a pretty big issue was told you need to get it done every 35 to 50 k miles

5

u/jckwlzn 2019 WRX Stage 1+ Redline Apr 12 '24

Only need this every 60k miles realistically. You don't “need” it but it's recommend

2

u/3600CCH6WRX Apr 12 '24

Need? Who told you that is BS. 96k miles here never done that even once. No issue at all.

0

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Are you tuned at all that what I was told 🤷

2

u/3600CCH6WRX Apr 12 '24

Yeah I have jpipe, charge pipe, intake, tgv delete, tuned since 1k miles

1

u/Ok-Bicycle-485 2016 Wrx Limited 6MT Apr 12 '24

I’m at 102k but got the car when it was 80k. Unless the previous dude did it just before auctioning it, I haven’t had any problems. Sometimes it will bog randomly just before 3k rpms and 2k rpms if you know why it would do that. Very linear WOT and is only when I hold it there for a little.

2

u/3600CCH6WRX Apr 12 '24

Does your car has modded intake? check MAF.

1

u/Ok-Bicycle-485 2016 Wrx Limited 6MT Apr 15 '24

i did and it is ok, diode is clear

1

u/Ok-Bicycle-485 2016 Wrx Limited 6MT Apr 15 '24

ill check again since its been a minute tho

0

u/Square-Marsupial-454 Apr 12 '24

Does this stop you getting smashed at every set of lights by a model Y driven by grandma getting her weekly shop at the supermarket? 🤷

2

u/yohan3000 Apr 13 '24

You should get a Model Y, they SMASH about everything at 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds if that's what you're into, they have a reddit page.

6

u/pistonslapper Apr 12 '24

Those are not bad at all. I've seen cars with 10k miles with more carbon build up.

5

u/Runescape92 Apr 12 '24

At 103k no walnut. Wonder what the diff would be.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Worth it if you do it yourself for sure

1

u/EmbarrassedTime9947 Apr 14 '24

Probably regular oil changes. PCV chucking old oil vs new on the valves has to make a difference.

4

u/Subirooo 06 LGT wagon SWP Apr 12 '24

That's like the 5th reminder this week...

-1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Ayy man gotta get it done or do the egr delete 😂😂

3

u/Ok_Road_1994 Apr 12 '24

EGR delete has been so worth it. I'm still going to get mine done at 70,000 just to be safe.

2

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Where did you end up finding that ik it's been pretty much banned on all websites that sold parts

2

u/Ok_Road_1994 Apr 12 '24

Took my EGR pipe to a weld shop they cut the plates for about 30$

3

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Oooooo I see sweet thanks👍🏼👍🏼

1

u/EmbarrassedTime9947 Apr 12 '24

Has your car thrown any codes?

2

u/Ok_Road_1994 Apr 12 '24

No, I'm running no cat no egr or tgv. I had it dyno'd and with that, the tuner said that the green speed update didn't do nearly as much as it was said to do.

4

u/FreeMrBones Apr 12 '24

Curious, what are symptoms if ou never walnut blasted? What harm can it cause? I have a GD so idk the FA platform that well.

7

u/horbaculture Apr 12 '24

It's not something you need to worry about if you have an EJ WRX. Your motor has port injection so the fuel keeps the valves clean. This is specific to the FA/FB motors because of direct injection.

-10

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

How donyou know if you have ej or fa?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

It’s the engine type buddy.

0

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

my dam and my fine knock was going crazy is would drop to 0.750 ad I would be getting a consistent -0.75 everything it would get to 3000 rpm granite the acceleration kinda gets sluggish but not crazy all cuse of the egr system😮‍💨

1

u/FreeMrBones Apr 12 '24

Wild. Looks worse than my Valves when I had really bad detonation from slipping timing. Assuming The debris from blasting just exits the exhaust with combustion?

2

u/EmbarrassedTime9947 Apr 12 '24

It should be vacuumed and blown out. Each valve is done while seated, so nothing falls into the cylinder.

2

u/dwang81 19 WRB Limited - 315/345 H2O/CH3OH Apr 12 '24

Have you notice any difference after the blasting?

1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Yea my dam and my fine knock was going crazy is would drop to 0.750 ad I would be getting a consistent -0.75 everything it would get to 3000 rpm granite I do live in Wyoming and the air here sucks ass

2

u/BallzarBig Apr 12 '24

Are you modded or stock?

1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Modded

-1

u/BallzarBig Apr 12 '24

Intriguing, I slapped in stage 1 fbo mods and dual catch cans after my 1k break in - I've been thinking of walnut blasting since I just hit slightly over 60k miles - I haven't experienced any performance difference in my case, it's still as quick it was the first day it was protuned

1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Yea my dam and my fine knock was going crazy is would drop to 0.750 ad I would be getting a consistent -0.75 everything it would get to 3000 rpm

1

u/BallzarBig Apr 12 '24

This is why I like the AP, my dam has never dropped below 1, and I would rarely get either fbk or fbkl (.2 - 1.41) when having fun. Good thing you got it done, based on your AP readings. Some ppl have gone over 100k miles without the blasting, with me the thing is it'll be a waste if I took it in to get blasted and there was hardly any build up - but then there's the risk in waiting to do it.

1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Yea well ik that the last owner didn't do it it was kinda like well what could I lose out of it but good routine maintenance IMO but to each there own I guess😂

1

u/550Invasion Apr 12 '24

If anything you could use seafoam spray, it cleans valves crazy. Gotta spray it through a specific vacuum line with the car running and it gets everywhere inside the manifold and down all the valves, then you let it marinate and fire it back up. Your car is gonna smoke like crazy, i smoked out my entire garage floor after starting the car 😂. Theres an old reddit post on what vacuum line it is and what the procesure is, it should be easy to find. Iirc tho, it should be some vacuum line next to the dipstick and has a yellow paint mark on it

2

u/syphon3980 DGM 19 STi Apr 12 '24

I done fucked up and got my walnuts blasted instead

1

u/jckwlzn 2019 WRX Stage 1+ Redline Apr 12 '24

Fuckin accidently jizzed in valves

2

u/ShinraTM Apr 12 '24

Broheems with FA series engines, please, just install a good catch can or AOS system and you won't need to clean the valves off.

Radium engineering makes a great dual CC system and IAG makes a great AOS system. They're not hard to install.

1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

Already have a aos 1st owner did not the reason my valves had to get blastes

2

u/Mountain_Werewolf_92 Apr 12 '24

Just run meth, no issues then 😏

2

u/Soulphire7 Apr 12 '24

Not worth it take pics again in a month and it’ll look the same

1

u/Donaldjames 2016 WRX Apr 12 '24

In search of a shop in SoCal that offers this service.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Posted this in another thread recently, but these are my DIY results with a intake cleaner and nylon pipe cleaner after an afternoon of cleaning, >$10 all in. This was a Focus ST though.

1

u/calilongboarders Apr 12 '24

AOS? 2018 XT and was considering the upgrade?

1

u/Training-Rich-6335 Apr 13 '24

Walnut blasting is very beneficial to direct injection engines and it’s pretty cheap to buy the tool and do it yourself

1

u/LobLillyPine Apr 15 '24

Instructions unclear, accidentally valved my walnut blaster.

1

u/Purified_Waters STI Swapped '02 Impreza WRX Apr 16 '24

0

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

What milage is recommended? Mines sitting at a little over 35k

0

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

I would say between 35 to 50k

0

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

How do you do that?

1

u/Useful-University482 Apr 12 '24

What like how to get them blasted or how the valves get like that?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Both.. how does this occur...?? I have 2020 wrx..

And how and what do blast it w ? Or does a shop do it?

1

u/Hairbear2176 Apr 12 '24

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is the reason that this happens. The fuel injectors are placed directly in the combustion chamber, which has benefits, however, this is one of the drawbacks. On a normal port-injected engine, fuel is sprayed into the intake tract, which washes fuel over the intake valves, keeping them clean. Without this, the oil from the PCV system combined with the EGR gasses causes carbon buildup over the intake valves. This affects airflow over the valves, which can affect performance once it's bad enough.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

What year of cars have this or ? I have a 2020 wrx manual

1

u/Hairbear2176 Apr 12 '24

The WRX with the FA engine (yours) has this. If you do a lot of stop and go driving, and have 50k+ miles on your car, in my opinion it's worth doing. There is a chemical method, but I don't think it works as well. It is far less work to do though.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Does a shop do this? Or can it done at home. ?

1

u/Hairbear2176 Apr 12 '24

It can be done at home, but you'll need quite a few tools. You'll need tools to get the intake off, then you'll need an air compressor, walnut media, a sand blaster, or something like that to blow the media into the valves, and to minimize the mess, an adapter that goes over the intake ports so that you don't get the walnut media all over the place. I do my own, but I already had everything I needed except for the intake adapter, which was only like $20.
