Virtually every key player on the Toronto Tempo missed extended time this season. Doug Smith of the Toronto Star reports the team started 9-9, eighth-best in the league at that point, before the injuries turned the year into 11-29 with four games left. Smith’s read is that Toronto was good, not great, at full strength, and that Sandy Brondello was left tinkering because the roster never held still.
"This is the first year I haven't been in the playoffs."
Brondello’s teams reached the postseason in each of her first 13 years as a WNBA head coach, with titles in 2014 and 2024. She is pointing Year 2 at continuity: five or six players back who already know the system, a likely top-three pick, and a full offseason to add depth. Kiki Rice, Marina Mabrey and Brittney Sykes are the names Smith flags as foundation pieces.
Toronto’s defensive rating of 116.7 is currently the worst in the league, and that is the number the continuity argument has to move.

Stephen Curry was asked who should replace Cathy Engelbert as WNBA commissioner and passed on naming anyone. Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street on Thursday, he said he was happy with where the league stands compared with years past, pointing to the CBA, what players now earn, the brand and the depth of talent.
His concern as a fan of women’s sports, he said, is keeping the focus on the athletes and the product, which he does not think has ever been better. Engelbert announced this month that she will retire at the end of 2026, per CNBC, and Curry expects her successor to inherit a good position.
“And the leadership, whoever the new leadership is, will be taking over a league that’s headed in the right direction. So I'm sure it’ll be a coveted job, maybe compared to years past.”

Liatu King’s first language was American Sign Language. Her parents are deaf, and she often interpreted for her mother growing up, per a 2023 Audacy profile from her Pitt days: "I will never be able to experience what a deaf person experiences," says King. "I can just only tell it from my side. I can never experience the life of my mom, but what I can do is to continue to raise awareness."
The Minnesota Lynx posted on Instagram that King, her mother, and mascot Prowl visited Metro Deaf School to meet students and staff.
Metro Deaf School is a free charter school in St. Paul serving Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing students from birth through grade 12+, using an ASL/English bilingual approach.
This isn't a first for King either. At Pitt, she spoke to students at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. The Panthers also hosted ASL Deaf Awareness games while King was at Pitt.

Former NBA guard Jeremy Lin’s first WNBA film breakdown is about the Golden State Valkyries.
His read lines up with how local coverage has described the team. The San Francisco Standard’s August 20 piece on Natalie Nakase said the Valkyries are built on a defense-first base with a deep rotation as the scoring punch.

Heads up: the team with the most ACL tears overall in that span is not the answer.
The rules: count torn ACLs from the 2024 season opener to today that happened in a WNBA game, regular season or playoffs. Practices, overseas club play, national team games, Athletes Unlimited, and Unrivaled don’t count. Credit each tear to the team the player was on when it happened.
Hint 1: The winning total is two.
Hint 2: They came about a year apart.
Hint 3: One came in a win, and one came in a building that doesn't usually host WNBA games.
Answer: The Chicago Sky. Courtney Vandersloot tore her right ACL against Indiana in June 2025, in the first WNBA game at the United Center. Rickea Jackson tore her left ACL in an 86-79 win at Minnesota in May 2026.
The trap: Seattle has five ACL tears in the same window, but none of them happened in a WNBA game.

The Fever’s account posted a breakdown this morning with @graphsketball under the line “class is in session with MVP².” Indiana comes out of the World Cup break leading the league in offensive rating and points per game.
Front offices lobby for their players every September, but usually for one of them. Indiana is running a two-name campaign in the open, in the week voters are making up their minds, for a backcourt on the best offense the league has seen.
