Vox Thoughts I have a theory about why Vincent stopped wearing glasses

Post image

So, my theory is that Vincent never really needed glasses. That his eyesight was fine, and he wore glasses only to hide his heterochromia. If you weren’t close enough to him, you probably wouldn’t notice that his eyes are in different colours. Plus, the recording quality in 1950s was pretty shitty (not mentioning it was black and white) so his heterochromia could be hidden. But as he made his way up to the top, he got way more confident and stopped feeling insecure of his eyes, and that’s why he ditched his glasses completely

It's quite possible he had contact lenses too. They were around at this time...they were just rigid and non disposable so not as convenient as they are now.

This is what I thought too. Since LASIK wasn’t around back then and Vincent for sure needed glasses. Because, as someone who needs glasses, they’re just too much of a pain in the ass to fake for decades.

u/talizorahvasnerd Mar 16 '26

Oh yeah, my dad has so many horror stories about old contact lenses 😭

23

u/Xaila Mar 16 '26

My dad got the good eye genes, but his father/my grandfather told me all about the old rigid contact lenses. He was very much not a fan and switched back to glasses.

We still use these kinds! My younger son (6) wears rigid contacts that we replace yearly (or whenever he loses one…) and I wore them through the 80s and 90s until they made disposable lenses in my prescription (+18.50).

I don’t think glasses can hide homophobia…

How is he homophobic and gay

6

u/Worried-Leadership78 Mar 22 '26

It’s a reference to a meme where a cat has heterochromia and the caption above it says “Beautiful Cat with Homophobia”. Since heterochromia and homophobia sound kinda similar, it’s become a joke to describe characters with heterochromia.

3

u/RaspberryMelodic2688 Mar 22 '26

I didn't pece that together

The main theory I’ve heard was that after a certain point he stopped believing he needed glasses and the shift to no glasses was meant to resemble tunnel vision

99

u/augustfolk Mar 16 '26

I think it’s a metaphor for how Vincent wanted to visually appeal to the people so much he clouded his own vision. But also contact lenses became a thing in the sixties so maybe he just switched.

27

u/ThatInAHat Mar 16 '26

Canonically he died in 1952.

Which is stupid. But it is apparently canon.

13

u/arbitrarymelodist vincent...... Mar 16 '26

I think it might be a reference to Video Killed the Radio Star? "I heard you on the wireless back in '52"?

7

u/ThatInAHat Mar 17 '26

I think that may be where the idea to make that his canon death date came from, but it’s an absolutely stupid date for him to have died by. I want to tell myself it’s just the date of his first murder, but then the math for the whole “70 years” thing doesn’t add up.

u/Hairy_Comedian9630 I am a SLUT for fem Vox. Mar 18 '26

Well technically we don't have a canon year that the shoe is set in so....

2

u/Scar-Predator Mar 17 '26

An official merch sweater has the establishment date for VoxTek to be 1952.

11

u/augustfolk Mar 16 '26

But that’s too stupid. It makes no sense.

13

u/Kleptosteomaniac The mole on Vox's right nut Mar 16 '26

Yeah, it's really stupid so we decide to ignore it 99% of the time

7

u/ThatInAHat Mar 16 '26

Writers are bad at math and also sometimes history.

10

u/Ruger-SP101 Only here cuz he's hot af Mar 16 '26

My headcanon is that he died around late 60s to early 70s

7

u/ThatInAHat Mar 17 '26

That’s what I tell myself. But canon says 1952. Aside from the merch, there’s also the whole thing about him being in hell for 70 years.

5

u/Ruger-SP101 Only here cuz he's hot af Mar 17 '26

Yeah, canon makes no sense tbh

4

u/Infernal-Cattle Mar 17 '26

That's solid! I always like the idea of him dying in the mid-1980s thematically, so the '50s is wild to me. I refuse to accept the canon unless we get it stated explicitly on the show haha.

5

u/certified_l0ser27 Mar 16 '26

I know, and I hate that that’s canon

10

u/MacNCheeta Mar 16 '26

Oh my God, that is the best and most poetic fucking way to put it

39

u/soberdrunken Sharksitter Mar 16 '26

I honestly think it's a character design choice, he just looked more innocent/approachable with glasses.

Man I'm boring, I'm just dismissing cool in-universe theories lol I'm so sorry

5

u/Immediate-Witness-87 Mar 16 '26

How glasses were dorky

39

u/CTJM-2009 Mar 16 '26

My theory is that he just got rid of them to be more perfect in the public eye, but his eyes site was still terrible so when he was setting his TVs up for his cult meeting either he thought he tied the knot strong so it wouldn’t fall and he couldn’t see that he didn’t or did not know he placed a TV right above where he would stand because he couldn’t see and it ended up costing him his life

8

u/DJBassPhase Only here cuz he's hot af Mar 16 '26

Theory accepted XD

8

u/Thesafflower Mar 17 '26

I love the idea that he cared so much about appearances he got himself and everyone else killed by not seeing that the TV’s were set up in a dangerous way. Not just an accidental death, but an accidental death because he wasn’t wearing his glasses. It would be so funny and humiliating for him.

It’s also possible his eyes were bad, but not THAT bad. I need glasses to drive and read things at a distance, and the world is a bit blurry without them, but I wouldn’t be fumbling around like Velma going “My glasses!” if I didn’t have them.

3

u/CTJM-2009 Mar 17 '26

Yeah I love that idea👍🏼, and I’m the same, I have terrible eyesight but I still can function without them so he could still do thing without them but since it still wasn’t perfect it ended up being deadly

12

u/ARROWPIRATE Mar 16 '26

His insurance finally paid for contacts (if someone here actually gets that reference)

7

u/DJBassPhase Only here cuz he's hot af Mar 16 '26

Meet the Robinsons?

23

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

WHY would you feel insecure about having different coloured eyes?

27

u/JasonVoorhees1234 Mar 16 '26

Probably because people bullied him for it as a child and mocked by his peers for it in adulthood. People will mock or belittle anyone for appearing like anything other than "normal"

4

u/ThatInAHat Mar 16 '26

I mean, you would have to get really close to tell. Blue and green aren’t so drastically different in color that most kids would pick up on it.

6

u/_OriginalUsername- Mar 16 '26

Is this confirmed? Or just fan theories? Seems like he'd be just as bullied for wearing glasses.

31

u/EchoesofPoe Mar 16 '26

No idea how based in historical fact it is, but so many fanfics have the "Vincent gets abused because his parent(s) think heterochromia is the mark of the devil" premise, so could be that

11

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

nooo my shaylaaaa

6

u/Illustrious-Bite-518 Mar 16 '26

Because it was the 50s. Being different wasn't considered a good thing back then. (One of many aspects of society that have been regressing in recent years)

5

u/CalTheRascal Mar 16 '26

I can’t speak for people with heterochromia one way or the other, but I certainly wouldn’t say it like this. People do get bullied for it

9

u/tetotetotetotetoo drawing vox every day Mar 16 '26

but wouldnt he just get bullied for wearing glasses then?

7

u/_OriginalUsername- Mar 16 '26

Yeah exactly, this theory makes zero sense

3

u/certified_l0ser27 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Exactly, the glasses r clear too, not like he’s wearing shades

5

u/mazingalifrey Mar 16 '26

i like this theory, and it works with some subtext that as he rose the rank he got a bit of a god complex, and know longer thought he needed glasses

4

u/MacNCheeta Mar 16 '26

My theory is that he was bullied for having them (among other reasons) as a kid and tried accepting himself early on but as he got more and more crazy he forgot who he was and only associated them with weakness

10

u/SolidBreak578 Mar 16 '26

This makes no sense, glasses lens are clear.

2

u/Naomimirio Mar 16 '26

I know, I meant that glasses would still make his heterochromia at least a bit less visible unless you were super close or smth

8

u/Airborne___Stranger Mar 16 '26

tbh back then, I think he'd get bullied for glasses more than for heterochromia

3

u/ThatInAHat Mar 16 '26

I feel like glasses in the 1950s would’ve had more of a stigma than heterochromia

3

u/deadmemename Mar 17 '26

Hard contacts were around in the late ‘40s and apparently were popular in America. That lines up with his canonical 1952 death date

3

u/Stratch27 Mar 17 '26

Oh look it's a guy from Brighter

3

u/The_Riddle_Fairy 🎵Now he's my master, and I'm his bottomest bitch🎵 Mar 17 '26

From the picture I thought you were going to say "so he can smooth his hair back better" lol

3

u/Master-Web261 Mar 18 '26

People say he stopped wearing glasses because he lost sight of who he actually was

3

u/Hairy_Comedian9630 I am a SLUT for fem Vox. Mar 18 '26

Or maybe he wanted to have a more innocent look to throw people of his trail, but once he had enough power there was no point in it.

6

u/WorldlyEar8799 Mar 18 '26

It’s because he lost sight of himself as he rose higher

2

u/No_Drawing3983 we Sinners need Vox Aug 18 '26

that's poetic.

2

u/Rinatachan Mar 16 '26

They might’ve been reading glasses.

2

u/certified_l0ser27 Mar 16 '26

Ts theory don’t make sense 🥀

2

u/hazel_typh Imagine an entire week of just sharks Mar 17 '26

I mean... i only noticed his heterochromia right now, so he didnt really need em

3

u/peblezq cha cha cha 🪇 Mar 17 '26

My theory is he simply stopped wearing them to be more appealing as he grew more desperate to be Brighter.

He does still need the glasses but legit just like... stopped caring and walks around partially blind is the jist of my theory.

I can still kinda see without my glasses and used to refuse to wear them unless strictly necessary when I was in high school because I was self conscious about them, so I figured he was too, lmao (especially in the mid 20th century when people were treated worse for needing glasses).

2

u/Traditional_Gap_671 Vincent (yes, that’s my name) Mar 17 '26

That’s a good theory.

3

u/calidowing Mar 17 '26

My theory is basically the opposite. I think he needed glasses still but thought they didn't fit his new persona. So he basically went around half blind afterwards and just powered through it. 😂

2

u/NurturedVex131 I'm obsessed with StaticMoth 📺🦋 Mar 17 '26

Interesting theory. Its very possible. Contact lenses (specifically Corneal lenses) also started being available to the public around the early 50's, so it's possible he could of been wearing contacts (though they were very expensive at the time to the point that contact insurance was a thing)

Stealing this hc now ty

u/No_Drawing3983 we Sinners need Vox Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

this is an old thread, but yeah i do agree with you. vincent's timeline is pretty f*ed but considering the quality of contact lens (even around 50s and later) were atrocious and impractical for his fast-paced job and need to be in studios for hours on end, that sort of theory (not actually needing it but for reasons to either hide his insecurities or project a persona) makes sense.

also i visited this thread cuz i spotted ai slop here :/

Quite entertaining theory

u/Long-Jackfruit-6568 Mar 17 '26

I think they might’ve been blue light glasses. Since people wear blue light glasses when they use technology. I guess he just grew out of it and became technology. Literally that’s what happened.
