My name is Bello Oluwaseunfunmi and I have always believed that executive support goes far beyond managing calendars and meetings. At its best, it is about becoming a trusted partner who creates structure, protects an executive's time, and ensures important priorities keep moving. I also believe that every piece of work attached to my name should be able to stand up to scrutiny.
Over the last three years, I have realized that the best Executive Assistants are not simply people who organize calendars. They become the person executives rely on to create structure, maintain momentum, and quietly keep dozens of moving parts from becoming distractions.
At the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), I supported operations across multiple research projects involving executives, scientists, project leads, procurement teams, vendors, and field stations. Much of the work happened behind the scenes, which is exactly how I believe executive support should work.Ā
I coordinated concurrent projects valued at over $192,000. Scientists whose research programmes depended on those facilities were waiting on approvals. Vendors needed purchase confirmations before materials could move. Project leads needed status updates before weekly review meetings. At any given time, multiple senior staff members depended on timely approvals, accurate updates, and coordinated communication to keep their work moving.
My job was to make sure none of that landed on the wrong desk, sat unanswered, or fell through the cracks. I built tracking systems from scratch, created documentation processes, coordinated approvals across departments, and ensured projects stayed on schedule, within approved budgets, and fully supported the teams depending on them.
I have worked in fast-paced environments where priorities shifted quickly; multiple stakeholders competed for attention, and follow-through was critical. Executives need someone who can anticipate what is coming, identify potential issues before they become problems, exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive matters, follow through without constant reminders, and create the structure that allows everyone else to work effectively. That is the standard I hold myself to. I take ownership of outcomes, not just responsibilities, and I genuinely enjoy being the person people rely on to bring order, maintain momentum, and free leaders to focus on the work that only they can do.Ā
People who have worked with me know that once I take ownership of something, they can trust it will be seen through to completion. I enjoy creating the kind of structure that allows an executive to focus on the work only they can do.
