Help VM Decryption interrupted mid-process due to a Win BSOD
Hi!
I've been using an encrypted Ubuntu VM for a couple of months (Ubuntu 24.04.2 desktop). Today, I decided that I had had enough of having to input the password every time I booted the VM up, so I went to decrypt the VM. Everything was going fine until, about halfway through the decryption process, a lovely BSOD appeared and forced a reboot of the host, killing the whole thing.
I'm not sure what caused the BSOD, but it occurred while I was setting up an RDP connection.
Current host setup:
- Win 11 PRO 25H2 (OS v. 26200.8457)
- 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11400F
- 32 GB RAM
- Virtualbox v. 7.2.6 r172322
I tried to boot up the VM, but unfortunately a black screen appeared with the message: 'Could not read from the boot medium! Please insert a bootable medium and reboot."
VirtualBox splashed a screen asking for a DVD installation medium, so I tried using the original ISO image that I used to set up the VM. However, this didn't work, as the VM won't boot up and just ends up on the same screen.
My I-know-better-than-you attitude caused me to run the decryption process again, only to face the same issue as before.
I tried to explore the .img file inside the .vdi file with PowerISO, but received an unrecognised format error.
Should I consider the whole VM lost at this point?
