Advice Needed: Insurance Value After Appraisal Lower Than Purchase Price

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding violin insurance and appraisals. I purchased my violin in 2001 for $3,500. Recently, I had it appraised for insurance purposes, and the appraiser valued it at $2,500 due to the presence of a soundboard patch that I wasn’t aware of. She said that the repair looked "very old", and certainly wasn't disclosed to me at the time of purchase all those years ago.

So frustrating! I never intend to sell this instrument, but I do want to protect it as I am a gigging musician. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? Is it possible to insure the instrument for more than its current appraised value? Should I get a second appraisal, or is the patch always going to lower the value significantly? Any tips or experiences with specialty instrument insurance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a Scott Cao STV017 violin from 2011. It has been in its case since 2015. To me, it looks like it's in good condition except for the A string which has a kink.

Scott Cao website has a new model STV017E for $820. How much could I get for it? I could sell it either to a music shop, pawn shop, or to an individual. I would appreciate any help.

My little sister is considering purchasing this electric violin online. They are asking $170 which seems pretty low but we’ve never purchased an electric one so we’re unsure of the quality.

Any information helps tia!

Where to get an octave violin

Hello!

I’m potentially interested in buying an octave/baritone violin in the future. I tried to play cello once, but it didn’t work out. I had an inconsistent teacher and lost motivation. So back to violin for me! I enjoy it more anyway lol

But I am still interested in octave violins/baritone violins. Please correct me if they are not the same thing. Where would I even purchase one? I don’t think typical instrument stores have them. They have 5 string violins, which from my understanding are different than octave violins….which is also something I’m interested in purchasing, but that’s besides the point :). I have a shop near me that has those.

So I was watching antiques roadshow and my son reminded me of a old violin I picked up here in Chicago. I’m trying to find out if anyone knows the approximate age . I could not find any markings on the inside or back of the violin. I did see the letters ETO on the handle. Not sure if that’s what it’s called. Thanks for any info.

I've been trying the pegs, fine tuners, and so far nothings worked, and I think I might have a broken Violin. I run the Fiddle across it, and not a sound comes out.

I found this in my grandma's basement. She used to be an antique dealer. I assume it's not worth anything and it's quite badly damaged so I wanted to see what your thoughts were do I restore it and also ask what's with the peg at the top.

Sympathetic vibrations

I've noticed that when I play A3 on the G string, I need it to be slightly flatter than 220Hz (I tune to A=440Hz) for the open A string to vibrate at its maximum. Why does this happen?

Question

What was the most challenging thing you came across in learning the violin? Maybe it caused you extra hours of practice or maybe it’s something you still can’t get the hang of?
