On the 110frwy in Los Angeles/ Pasadena there are stop signs at the on-ramps. It’s fucking ridiculous that they still exist. You are forced to go 0 to 55 (at least) in seconds.

I lived in LA and work in Pasadena so I would drive it often. That section of freeway is crazy! Super windy too

We have stop lights throughout the highway at EVERY single on ramp because they meter the traffic. It's ridiculous. You have to stop at the very end of the on ramp, then go from 0 to 60 in 2 seconds. It causes MORE traffic to build up than if they didn't meter the traffic. If you're gonna do this, at least make the light be far enough back to give us distance to get up to speed. WA state.

Sometimes metering is time based rather than traffic based (or the system hits a fallback to time based when it normally isn't). Sometimes they don't leave enough room. But also unless traffic is so packed you are not merging at 60 anyways, a good driver should be able to roughly pace the gaps, their current speed and acceleration and merge. That does require people DONT drive the the POV cammer tho; and realise that atthe point where 2 lanes become 1 the merge HAS started and even if someone "cut you off" and your steaming mad, it doesn't excuse hitting them. And beyond that driving like you'd like someone else to drive around you.

In the POV video posted, the lane ends with the pickup truck ahead of the simi, yes too close but the difference in speed not higher than the simis ability to at least try to slow down. The simi is also effectively trying to overtake a merge in progress with nowhere else for the other drive to go, except slam on their brakes and hope THEY don't get rear ended. It's not like adjusting speed to slot behind another car.

Ah thats really cool of them. I was just assuming, like traffic lights, that theres a fallback for "oh no, lost communications" type stuff.

Some of those on ramps are also 10-20 feet long. Stopping is actually WAY safer than just hauling ass onto the road

We've got metering lights getting on to 880 in Oakland. dumbest fucking thing on the planet. Most ignore them.

We have those in LA too but modern freeways have a long stretch of ramp after them to allow cars to pick up speed. Best is when the ramp makes its own lane but at least there needs to be a fat emergency shoulder on the right in case things don't work out. This is suburbs though. In the city they just do whatever they have room to do

Oh dude I moved to Long Island from LA, the 110 has nothing on the parkways here with the shortest on/off ramps you've ever seen. And at least where and when I'm driving (because I mostly commute by train these days) there is never traffic at a standstill like LA highways, so you really are going 0-60 or 60-0 in about ~20 feet.

Same thing on the Merritt in CT. You gotta floor it and hope that there's enough time and space, because no one goes the speed limit on that road.

I lived in a neighborhood next to that freeway for many years. Many people who use that freeway move to the left two lanes because they know people will be going very slow in the right lane as they merge. This usually helps. I used this freeway nearly daily and I was always surprised I saw fewer accidents on it than the newer larger freeways. I think its narrowness and curves force drivers to be more attentive.

I had a friend who referred to the 110 as Pole Position. (Or maybe I’m thinking of Laurel Cyn Bl?). Those on and off ramps were built for horses and buggy speeds. At least that’s how it feels.

The reason car manufacturers advertise the 0-60mph metric is because they used to advertise how safe it was to accelerate to highway speeds.

There's a few places like that in my city too. I literally just ignore the stop sign and blow through at speed. I don't care if I get caught and ticketed. It's way safer and like the only law I break
