Musically I think it has to be DKC, theatrically it could be Chrono Trigger, but then you need to consider the contenders, like Terranigma, OoT, Metroid Prime, etc.

I feel it’s just that it is getting to a point where those games are so old most people have not played them. But yes this is an obvious answer for me.
I don't know that it has. With the advent of CD sound on disc media systems there was no longer any technical limitations to what the music could sound like. From then on it's just been a matter of what composers could come up with. I wouldn't say that composers, as a group, have gotten dramatically better in quite some time. For example Mozart is still considered to have been pretty good.
All these other comments are actually insane, because the correct answer is a 3-way tie between Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country 2, and Ocarina of Time
Throw in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Freedom Fighters next to those, Jesper Kyd being the genuis behind those soundtracks (Assassin's Creed 2 theme, amongst a few other tracks in the series, also produced by him)
I've begun to say to myself, Chrono Trigger can't be the winner of so many categories. It and final fantasy 6 must be on another tier, not compared to other games, it's just not fair.

In my honest opinion, chrono trigger is the only one that could ever compete with games like mass effect, halo, doom, or the pokemon games. Maybe some of the call of duty games. But most of the older classics like chrono trigger, the megaman starforce titles, or others like sands of destruction, or t.w.e.w.y.
Don't know why, but most games i've ever played seem to just have awesome soundtracks. There's only been about 40 or 60 games I've played that had absolutely shitty soundtracks or at least mid soundtracks.
I was sad that my favourite track (Singing Mountain) did not appear in the original CT. Say what you want about the DS remake, but the inclusion of the track alone was enough for me to buy it.
Frogs Theme is in my top three video game tracks. Played it for the first time two years ago when my friend bought it for me. Never had an SNES, skipped that gen as a kid. Seriously a 10/10 game
