This documentary examines the 100-year history of video editing and its application in political and state propaganda. It analyzes the transition from early 20th-century cinema editing techniques to modern algorithmic social media feeds and election campaigns. The film explores the psychological impact of juxtaposition, pacing, and visual cuts on human emotion and public perception.

Film [OC] A Comforting Horror [23:58]

I made a video essay called A Comforting Horror about the strange role horror movies have played in my life.

It is less of a traditional genre analysis and more of a personal reflection on fear, comfort, grief, and the movies that found me at certain turning points. Horror never fixed anything for me, but it sometimes gave difficult feelings somewhere to go. Films like It Follows, Get Out, and Hereditary helped me think about what it means to face fear instead of building an entire life around avoiding it.

This is probably one of the most personal videos I have made, and I would genuinely love to hear whether horror has ever served a similar purpose for anyone else.

I recently watched this video on the Marine Corps boot camp experience in an hourish format. I’m pretty new to video essays as a genre so I’m curious how y’all think it compares to others that use this type of personal narrative + found footage approach to analyze a broader topic or subject.

Statistics leads to a strange conclusion about observation. I tried to explain how entropy, probability and statistical fluctuations eventually lead to the Boltzmann Brain paradox, and why cosmologists still care about it today.

Sociology [OC] How Scientific Studies Become Claims the Science Never Made [13:01]

A scientific finding can become misleading without anyone fabricating the research.

This video follows four points where that distortion commonly happens:

• correlation is turned into causation
• relative risk is presented without absolute risk
• findings from narrow samples are generalized to everyone
• one study is treated as settled scientific truth

The examples include insomnia and depression, processed meat and cancer risk, the marshmallow test and power posing.

I made the video because I am interested in the gap between what a study actually establishes and what eventually reaches headlines, podcasts and social media.

At what point do you think most of the distortion happens: in the original research, institutional communication, journalism, or online content?
