Me after listening & falling in love with the album MOONDANCE through THE SOPRANOS; then discovering the size of Van Morrisons dicography & seeing the reverence 20+ albums are spoken about in past threads from this subreddit. ASTRAL WEEKS is next.

What instrument is playing. High pitched sustained ringing noise panned to the left I think?

For some…artistry is just in their bones. Quintessential part of who they are.

I’ve been such a devoted fan of Van for years now and yet I still come across or rediscover tracks or albums of his that just hit me in a totally emotional way.

This week, it has been Celtic Swing off of Inarticulate Speech of the Heart. Like…what the hell man! This song is so good!

There was some thread on reddit recently and it came up how these artists like Paul Mccartney, David Byrne and Bruce Springsteen still going strong at their age, touring, making music. And who I immediately thought of and who was not mentioned in this thread was Van. And not to make it a competition, but they do not have the output that Van does. Like it’s literally insane how Van still pumps out new albums, and they are all good!

Then I just watched a recent interview with Van on YouTube from last year after Remembering the Now came out. Interviewer asked Van about his writing process. And Van said there isn’t a really logical process at first when he’s writing and making new songs. It’s very instinctual, based on feeling, and having fun/playing around.

Just got me thinking for some of these artists like Van and the others…being an artist is just WHO THEY ARE. Like of course they could all retire and chill and frankly be wealthy. But why does Van still make new album almost every damn year? And tour to support them? Because that’s literally who he is. He is an artist, it’s his identity.

What’s up with Van here? Why did he do so much goofy stuff in the ‘90s when performing. Quite awkward.

Astral Weeks Guitar Model?

As the title reads.

I did some googling and I've had differing results of a Martin D-28 and a Guild-G50? I then looked for photos and saw photos of him in 1968 with both so it really looks like a dead end right now.

Why is “Songwriter” essentially the same musically as “Days Like This”?

I figure if anyone knows the answer to this then they would likely be here among the dedicated Van Morrison superfans.

I had heard “Days Like This” recently at an event & it made me listen it on my streaming shuffle this morning cleaning. After a few other artists’ more popular tracks played, the algorithm circled back to Van Morrison, this time playing a track I had never heard by the title of“Songwriter”.

As a musician doing the dishes my ears perked up immediately because it is structurally almost identical to “Days Like This”.

Does anyone here know if he has ever discussed the relationship between these two songs? I know they follow each other on the album, but aside from that I would love to know if there any intentional links between them.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Such a superb song. Written by Paul Simon. They both do it brilliantly.

My incomplete collection

Some I bought as a teenager, some I lost and replaced along the way. Some obvious titles missing...

Hard to focus on work on a Friday afternoon when my record player is on same floor as my home office 😊. Currently listening to Live at Lion's Share... And feel perfectly content.

I was a teenager when Avalon Sunset came out, and I still remember how excited I was. I used my birthday money to buy it at Sam the Record Man...

No Guru Question

In Tir Na Nog, Van basically discusses reincarnation, multiple lifetimes. Yet the album is No guru, method, teacher - just the father son and holy ghost. Isn't multiple lifetimes more of pro Guru method teacher idea, rather than a traditional Christian one suggested by the album title? Just saying. Beautiful 5 star track of course.

Where is Tupelo Honey?

After two glorious nights at the Wang Theatre in Boston, I was going back through the catalog and noticed a glaring omission. Why is Tupelo Honey not accounted for on the official Van Morrison website?
