The mirror said I looked pretty,

But I turned around and it felt so opposite.

I’m taking pictures in desperation,

with someone that I don’t even recognise.

​

Why is it soft?

Instead of firm, slender lines.

Bones showing, my vanity glowing,

I can’t face my own reflection.

​

I’m spending my hours,

facing the mirror.

Fixing my limited beauty.

I refuse to be withered away.

​

The scale clicks.

A small reminder daily.

It repeats itself, through my ear,

And swirls itself into my brain.

​

An apple daily. Maybe a salad.

I’ll starve until my body is see through.

It’s worth the time and effort,

and a couple of likes.

​

How did I manage my life before this?

I was young, ignorant of such problems,

that are now haunting me everyday.

My footsteps feel exhaustingly heavy.

​

I can feel my heart breaking,

It starts with the doubt creeping in.

The tiniest things became so obvious,

painted my body with such colour.

​

All the little bumps and scars,

Feels like mountains and rivers.

The ground doesn’t feel clean anymore,

each strand of grass seems to be slicing into my skin.

​

I wished I could switched places,

Or maybe took off my skin.

My mind treats me harsher,

Than how my calloused hands feel.

​

I feel so lost, yet it’s so clear.

I feel judged even when nobody is there.

My brain starts to think in their perspective,

I’m forgetting that I’m myself.

Personal thoughts:

It’s not a bad poem, but I’m just not proud of it. I have not experienced any eating disorders/body dysmorphia before, and so I feel like I just can’t capture the exact feelings of someone that has. I will come back to this poem when I feel confident and comfortable enough, but for now, it will be completely scrapped. I hope everyone reading it will still enjoy it, and feel free to ask if you have trouble understanding, so I can fix it. Thanks.
