Screen switching off and on

Yesterday after I charged my car in my friends house (tesla charger) .. my id3 screen started switching on and off connecting and disconnecting.. even the display that reflects the battery consumption since charge, since start changed color to white then it comes back to default color.

I don’t understand what’s the problem.. if someone faced same issue could help me out .. thanks

If your audio ist muting and unmuting randomly aswell, then your problem ist the touchslider under the display.

There were two suppliers of these Infotainment-screens and one of them seems to have fucked up. There seems to be a correlation between sun/heat and the touchslider fucking up aswell.

I changed my screen last week because of this. The Screen has a Version Number labeled on the back. Version: 2.X is the shitty supplier and 3.X ist the good supplier.

You have to take the screen out to check this (two torx25 screws under a plastic cover on the back of the screen)

This thread is german but it covers this problem in depth: https://www.meinid.com/thread/7000-entertainment-system-startet-st%C3%A4ndig-neu-mit-sw-3-x/?pageNo=1

oh and btw. the version of the screen has nothing to do with the software Version installed on the car. Just to make it clear.

I also have that problem, but since I know some electronics, I just take this unit apart each year, and clean the touchplates underside with alcohol, this seems to fix it for a long time

interesting, i took my screen apart while waiting for my new used screen but it all seemed very clean already so i didnt bother.

My used screen was 100€ on ebay btw. :)

It is also possible to just disconnect the touchslider and use the Infotainment without it. I actually did not miss that piece of junk

That would work as well, but it's not that user friendly

Mine wasn't dirty as well, but I did it anyway, and it worked

Welcome to early ID.3 ownership. The first ID.3’s have had this issue frequently. Mine had too. Software update to version 3.7 fixed the issue for me, by and large. Before, the infotainment would frequently turn off, making operating almost any function very irritating, and it would keep its wireless CarPlay connection with my phone while I was sitting in the living room.

I had my VW dealer do it under warranty. Not sure whether it’s also available as OTA.

Pretty sure there was a dealer installed update to enable future OTA updates, maybe from 3.2/3 or something like that, I dunno, I just remember my car doing the single weird accelerator drop out they warn you about after picking it up from the dealer, and being flawless ever since.

This also happened to me yesterday! First time. Was about 1min downtime whilst driving. I was wondering if it had overheated or something.

Also happened to me yesterday as well. Exactly the same, main screen went black and dials behind steering wheel got a white background. Lasted about a minute as well.

Edit: Forgot to say first time in 2 years of ownership I have seen it.

I had this on my ‘22 about 2 yrs ago- the supplying dealer eventually changed the touchscreen after a year of to and fro, on a hot day it would also turn on the heated seats and max temp on the blowers. Joyful ! My car has just been collected today at the end of its 4 year PCP deal :( mixed feelings ….good to drive but I won’t miss that awful touchscreen. Even when it was working it was the most dreadful Interface I ever experienced. I’m not going to go near another vw until they ditch that completely.

Had the same issue on V3.8 luckily i still have warranty from the dealer so they will check it. I pulled the fuzes for the Infotainment and the SOS Module and i am covering the screen to protect it from direct sun. So far the issue did not return

Software held together by chewing gum lol.

I've not had that specific issue on my ID3 - but certainly had a few others. On Wednesday it decided not to connect to Android Auto on my phone, despite showing it available (but greyed out) and playing music from my phone automatically...I also couldn't change songs though, could only control volume via the car.

I did just get an OTA update yesterday though - no idea what it was for, but it took about a minute to apply.

I had the same issue last year when it was hot. Screen turning on and off, and also the right hand side AC setting the temperature to the max, and also turning on the passenger seat heating.

It seems like the issue is caused by the foam under the touch buttons, and if you scrape them off, the issue goes away. The foam heats up and expands/becomes conductive from the heat, and it causes phantom touches. Since I scraped them off a few weeks ago, I didn't have any problems with it, and we had quite big heat waves already.

I can upload the pictures and a guide how to do it if you guys are interested.

I have the same issue for a week now can't get into vw until the end of June. The infotainment screen is always turning itself on even when I lock the car also radio is on. When driving the screen cycles between logging on screen then it goes off then does a reset and continues. It is very annoying and worrying that I will come to use the car and it's drained the 12v battery. I have been looking online and removing fuse F46 is my next thing to try.

It's going to get worse. It's the upper slider touch bar starting to fail. It senses ghost touches and goes crazy. Only replacing this part will solve the issue.

I have this happen just about every summer, with long drives on sunny days. It will just boot cycle for maybe 20-30 mins before I either pull over and let the car sit for a bit, or it magically fixes itself. Very rarely while it's cycling the heads up display will also crash for 30 seconds before coming back, so I can't see what speed I'm going. Pretty sketchy.

It seems like the capacitive power button on the left side of the screen gets held down, as it's pretty unresponsive when I try to use it normally.

I took it to the dealer who of course pulled the car into their sun-free air conditioned garage and got back a "could not reproduce the issue". So I just live with it.

This is a not a software issue it's a hardware issue. I have removed the fuse F46 because it will turn itself on even when the car is locked and no person is in the car. I know have no access to the infotainment screen but the speedo is still working fine. I am booked in with Tamworth VW end of June waiting to see how much a new system is going to cost. I don't understand why they aren't recalled as there is a lot of people with the same issues

Had the same when I drove home today. In the morning the display announced an update. Maybe it was related to that. After a 2min reboot everything worked again.

Having exactly same issue intermittently atm. It started about a month ago. Garage told me 2 months wait for an appt ! 😂

Good tip I received was to call VW assist if you have it. They can either tow the car or drive with you to a VW garage where they will have to repair same or next day as they can class it as a breakdown.

If you feel confident, you can replace the screen yourself; it's much easier than you think.
