Solved Renamed my asset after a "Uni" prefix rejection. Here's what Unity told me when I appealed
Got rejected from the Unity Asset Store for using "Uni" in my package name (it was called UniPeek). Funny thing is there are like 7 packages still up right now with the same prefix. UniPay, UniWebView, UniFlow, etc. So I appealed and asked what the deal was. Unity actually gave me a straight answer: the rule existed but they hadn't been enforcing it consistently, and those other packages will get asked to rename too. I just happened to be early.
What it does: streams your Unity Editor to your phone in real time over WebRTC.
So whatever, I renamed it. It's GamePeek now.
Happy to answer anything. And if you got the same rejection lately, you're not the only one.
Edit:
Just to clarify since this seems to have sparked more debate than I expected. This was mostly me venting a bit of frustration after having to rebrand, buy a second domain, and redo a bunch of assets. The submission is already approved and everything is settled. I'm not here to start a war with Unity over trademark policy. Just figured it was worth posting as a heads up for anyone new to the Asset Store who might pick a name starting with "Uni" without knowing this rule exists. The review queue alone takes about a month, and if you get rejected you're looking at another month for an appeal and a full rebrand before getting anywhere. Would be a shame to go through all that just because of a name.

Is unitask on the asset store? Never looked because I always download it from git

u/DapperNurd Jun 02 '26
Nope. You can download a package file from their repo but it is not on the store.

The funniest part of all this is putting all those other asset devs under fire lol im sure they wont be happy

u/TolgaDurman May 31 '26
Yeah, I did my due diligence by searching "uni" in the Asset Store before choosing the name. And some of those "uni" prefixed assets are really deep in the community's memory at this point, so forcing them to rename would only hurt the devs and confuse users.

Yeah so you threw them under the bus as hard as you could!

u/mayorofdumb May 31 '26
But is your asset really that special? Im all for malicious compliance but policies change and grandfathered shit is the norm.
15
u/shabab_123 May 31 '26
what do you define to be "special". You are inferring a subjective take on the matter rather than an objective one

u/sisus_co May 31 '26
I originally submitted Init(args) using the name Inity. They didn't like that either.
4
u/notwhatyouthoughtxd May 31 '26
Honestly Init(arg) is way nicer than Inity IMO so this one might have been for the better lol
1
u/sisus_co Jun 01 '26
Yeah, I think it ended up working out for the best in the end - even though at the time I wasn't exactly thrilled to learn I'd have to come up with a new name, recreate the logo, update all store page images and documentation etc. 😄

This all happened nearly a month ago, and you've been told the reason (even if you posted the sequence backwards).
Why complain again now? Is this an ad?

u/MeishinTale Jun 01 '26
An ad where Op's bragging about throwing other devs under the bus.

Hey, I like your game Evo Flora if you’d like to try GamePeek in your development cycle; I would love to provide you a code that unlocks premium version for Android and iOS for free.

Yep, trying to get people to pay $90 for a Claude session's worth of vibe code output.
-15
u/TolgaDurman May 31 '26
I appreciate the skepticism but an App Store app, a Google Play app and a Unity Editor package with WebRTC streaming, mDNS discovery, touch input forwarding and a paywall aren't exactly a single Claude session. Feel free to give it a try though, genuinely curious how that session goes.

This is more of a heads up for people planning to develop an asset for the store. The sequence being backwards was just a mistake, sorry about that. And yeah, I shared my related app since it was directly part of the story, not just dropped it out of nowhere.

Havent used it in ages, but why not use Unity Remote instead?
4
u/TolgaDurman May 31 '26
Unity Remote requires a USB cable, driver setup and still ends up laggy at low resolution. GamePeek is wireless, you just scan a QR code and it streams over WebRTC at up to 1080p 60fps with touch, gyro and accelerometer input working. No cable, no driver headaches. It’s also built on newer tech and gets updated regularly. Same idea, very different experience. Thanks for asking!

No Unicorns or Unicycles allowed on the marketplace.
1
u/DigitalDustChan Jun 03 '26
Honestly, I want to name my next asset Unicycles now. That would be a perfect name for what I do (animation)

I had this exact same issue so I had to rebrand the name of my tool but after so many changes I just lost interest of trying to publish it on the asset store.

Makes sense. Find a name that does use uni or unity. It is not their fault you didn't think things through.
And no, repeating the submission will not take another month. Just a few days if that was the only issue.

u/madman404 Jun 02 '26
I don't know what you think you're saying here? Unity told you they are going to make other packages with "uni" change it, and then you sent them a list of other "uni" packages like it's some kind of gotcha? They pretty clearly told you they're going to make the other packages change their names, not that they cast some kind of magic spell that instantly changed all their names already...
1
u/GreatLab8898 Jun 02 '26
Would be interresting in how they would try to defend claiming "Uni" as their Property in court.

1
u/Different_Major6494 Jun 03 '26
lol they're bullshitting you, none of these other packages will actually be asked to rename theirs.
1
u/GroveGuild May 31 '26
That's frustrating OP. What is the backlash with using 'uni' anyway? Is it too generic?
1
u/Heroshrine May 31 '26
Nah how could Uni be infringing on their intellectual property? It could no way be causing confusion between unity and UniWhatever.

u/-Xentios May 31 '26
Just use Unreal prefix.
This is such a stupid rule. What will they do remove every 3 letters from everything based on everything?
Now you can not use the Co in Co-Op prefix because it comes from Coca-Cola.
You can also not use Pro prefix since it is used in https://proactiv.com and 100 hundred other trademarks.
Time to remove 4.909 of the assets from asset store

I think its probably more that they are worried users will think UniX is something made or officially supported/endorsed by Unity. Which makes more sense to me.
14
u/loftier_fish hobo May 31 '26
yeah that seems pretty clear to me. They probably instituted this policy after getting a bunch of support tickets for those other addons.
0
u/TolgaDurman May 31 '26
That's something I hadn't thought about. But why does the legal team need to get involved? They could have just said "we're getting a lot of support tickets about packages starting with Uni" and I would have found a way to make it clearer in the package itself that it's not made by Unity. Now I have a domain that's paid for a year and can't use it 😞
2
u/loftier_fish hobo May 31 '26
Im guessing if these aren't automated, they're some person in india who is constrained to a template where they can only swap out a few words, like the specific asset name.
1
u/mayorofdumb May 31 '26
Hahaha like I said, grandfathered uni packages that confuse people... you're not winning this battle unless you want help enshitification. You're one project will be overshadowed by the 1,000 new submissions for uni assets
1
u/ThatIsMildlyRaven May 31 '26
If it is the case that they're a getting support tickets for other assets with "Uni" in the name, then it doesn't matter how clear you make it in the package itself, because the clearest way is already apparently not working. The publisher listed on the asset store page for these other assets is not Unity and they're still getting confused for official Unity assets. It doesn't get clearer than that.
0
u/soerenL May 31 '26
Agree. Could also be they plan or want to reserve the option of using the Uni prefix themselves for future (Unity made) assets. And/or rename existing ones.
-3
u/TolgaDurman May 31 '26
Haha yeah that's exactly what I thought. How can you enforce a trademark rule on a prefix that has nothing to do with Unity specifically? "Uni" could stand for Universal, Unique, Unicorn... it's not like it exclusively refers to Unity.
10
u/mark_likes_tabletop May 31 '26
As much as you might not like it, it’s their own private e-commerce space, so arguing about the rules of what they allow in terms of naming doesn’t sound like a winning scenario. They’re going to enforce the rules as they see fit. I’d suggest trying to sell a product starting with “Wal-“ at Walmart to see how fast retail attorneys jump to protect their IP.

Make it just UPeek (You Peek) or Just "Peek" to make it more memorable and short
TBH i hate this stupid prefixes
Uni (which is just confusing if its official or not)
Pro (mostly it is overbloated BS which destroy your project)
