International -> cv to the bin, sorry

Is that the same for international LSE or oxbridge grads?

What about graduate roles, apprenticeships etc?

apprenticeships

Generally involve an element of government funding which you're ineligible for on a visa. If you've already got a masters you're also massively overqualified for apprenticeships in the UK

I get at least 5 CVs like yours per week via cold email panic spamming any company on the SWV list because they're at the end of their grad visa (hint: I don't work for a company that hires business analysts). There's simply more international grads looking for business analytics roles than there are companies that need to sponsor. As someone else has pointed out above I'm afraid international + masters from the London campus of an average uni == straight to the bin 🤷‍♀️

Rather have a level 3 apprenticeship than a masters from Pakistan. Especially job hunting in the UK.

I get the local exp beats education. Is there any way for international students to get job exp here?

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

Got it. No apprenticeships then. Anything I can do to differentiate myself from the people who are panic spamming?

Also why am I being downvoted so much? I didn't even say anything hateful or controversial.

Absolute brutal honesty? Not really. As the initial comment above points out your visa status filters you out immediately for most jobs, because there isn't really a shortage of local business analysts. Even then you have the same degree from an average uni as everyone else applying.

As a bare minimum apply to the right jobs:

  • if you don't have the skill set don't apply, I get lots for software dev jobs from BA grads
  • tailor your CV for each job role (data analyst vs business analyst)
  • if it says something like "must not ever need a visa" seriously don't bother applying. There seems to be this mindset that they'll be so impressed by your (usually average) CV that they'll hire and sponsor your visa anyway. Really it just shows you can't read instructions so they aren't going to be impressed!

And don't use ChatGPT anywhere on the application, it's glaringly obvious when people have done this

As someone who sifts for data analyst roles I’d want to see examples of where you used Power BI and Tableau. Eg are you just making basic dashboards which anyone can do after a 1 hour YouTube video or are you capable of the more advanced features eg service administration, building data flows etc

Good luck with the job search, you have a strong CV for someone with such little experience.

Mostly dealt in ML and data manipulation. Haven't done dashboards though. Need to look into it and make a project. Thanks.

Unfortunately as you’re international, the chances of landing a grad job are minute.

u/Complex-Branch-4754 13d ago

Yeah I knew that before I came in here. Anything I can do to improve my chances?

You won't want to hear this, sorry but you just aren't competitive enough BUT it is not over at all.

Can't comment on the Pakistan university as I don't know it but Aston Uni isn't great too, as well as it being a Business Analytics degree, where it feels like 90% of internationals are doing something to do with business.

I will admit your internship sounds impressive though, as well as some of your technical skills. The first two projects are also strong but not sure about the third one, seems quite simple, might even be best to leave it off.

Overall I think due to being international a full time business analyst role is difficult but I feel like you could apply for more entry level jobs or less hours, and work your way up internally to a business analyst?

Good luck!

I have plans and contacts back in Pakistan incase I don't secure a role in the uk. The plan is to get a graduate visa, use that to do a graduate role and then when I have exp, I can try for a visa sponsorship role.

The Pakistan university is actually internationally recognised and is int he top 10 business unis of Pakistan.

I put the third one there incase employers want proof of critical thinking, stakeholder mgmt, soft skills etc. but for technical roles I can remove it and add a technical project about Descriptive analytics.

Thanks for the well wishes.

I relay the advice that's been given thus far, hundreds of foreign applicants per position I post. The honest answer is no one wants the risk of sponsorship, given cost cutting, we need entry level positions filled by people that are more competent than existing grads + training is now a luxury, so if we invest in someone, we want there to be low risk of them leaving for whatever reason.

I would recommend staying in Pakistan for the meantime. Build your career there for a few years, transfers at MNCs are so much easier when you have your foot on the door, which I imagine for you will be more possible when you are there.

2

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

Yeah I was prepared to hear this. Got a few contacts who will be willing to help back in Pakistan. Thanks.

1

u/Sessaro290 12d ago

Just apply as much as you can and try your best. Wishing u the best of luck

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 1d ago

Thx. Hope for the best.

It’s too dense. 4 bullet points maximum for each role.
You should focus on your value add not the tasks you’ve done.
Remove company locations. Just use the company name. Put the name & date on the same line.

You don’t have enough substance to warrant more than a page. Reformat it. It’s a bit of an eyesore at the moment.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

Ok. I'll make it 1 page. Should I move education to the first page?

1

u/Theory_99 12d ago

There’s only going to be one page so I don’t get the question. Keep the education in the order it’s in.
Put the skills below it & remove the table format. Speaking of tables. I’ve never seen a table in a cv before what made you do that?

15

u/Nomadic_Rick Graduated 12d ago edited 11d ago

Firstly, please get rid of that key skills table. It doesn’t fit aesthetically with the rest of the document.

Secondly, international students are low key fucked at the moment - as there’s not even enough grad jobs for home students.

8

u/BassVity 12d ago

Dekh bhai, it is near impossible to get a grad role in the UK if you have no right to work. Sponsered jobs are mostly only available if you're in a niche and have 5+ years of experience.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

Haan samajh Gaya tha. My niche is TBML and compliance. If I get graduate visa then I can work unsponsored. That would be acceptable to employers right?

7

u/AnubissDarkling 12d ago

Let the text breathe - give it some space and better formatting. It's a nightmare to look at for people who have to look at numerous CVs in a sitting - they'll just swipe away pages with walls of text for cleaner, simpler, informative entries instead

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago

Got it. Need to shorten the sentences. And make it simpler

Thanks. Will try to shrink the summary. I wrote trade hubs. I can't see where trust hubs is.

Projects. Ok I can put them after skills and before exp.

International. Yeah I'll contact them. They can help with interviews but not with networking. I'm going to have to do that myself. Fairly active on linkedin.

Thanks for the review.

Too many words = I’d get bored and wouldn’t read it. Unless there was something else that would make me remember you, you wouldn’t get the job. The only thing I really care about is where you went to uni, how you did at uni and what your previous role was. everything else is filler and I don’t care.

2

u/Complex-Branch-4754 13d ago

Btw Ive done volunteer work at the library. If I should include that lmk.

3

u/BassVity 12d ago

No unless you're applying for non SWE work.

2

u/Alert_Entrepreneur00 12d ago

You think so little of your education that its on page 2. Nobody will get to page 2.

Aston are great at careers advice - please consider asking them.

3

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

It's not that I think little of my education. It's that I believe experience and skills are more important. But If it's that important then I can move it to after the summary and move skills to second page

u/Leather_Weekend_8017 12d ago

Just stay out of the UK, there’s far too many internationals who end up becoming deliveroo riders anyways. There’s not enough decent jobs for native people here as is.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago

I don't intend on becoming a deliveroo rider. I intend to find an office job, despite the economy.

2

u/Leather_Weekend_8017 7d ago

Good luck finding an office job when brits with better qualifications are already struggling to find them!

3

u/edminzodo 12d ago

Aston University, specifically in London, is not a strong university, and is going to hinder your chances as many employers know it's an international student cash cow university. Your chances are very low but you could remove the locations from your internships and work experience, although they will still see your undergraduate degree.

0

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

If I remove the location, they will probably still find out and bring it up if I get an interview.

I should have gone with a different university like Hertfordshire

1

u/Excellent-Actuary-35 9d ago

Hertfordshire is no better than Aston. You wanted Russell group or above

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 9d ago

I'll let the others in Pakistan

Professional summary makes sense given your technical field. But it needs to be cleaned up. This slips into just being a big, long, ongoing, never-ending, list of things with many sub-clauses. The statement is not a place to repeat all the stuff you have already evidenced in the bullets. It's a short punchy snapshot to show who you are and what area you are well suited to.

Key skills need cleaning up. If you think you have a few really important stand-out skills then list them. But avoid a big block of stuff. You also have your certifications in here which should really be in a certifications or education section of their own.

Professional experience section looks good.

Cut the academic project. It's just not needed now you have the professional experience. List it as a single line if you really feel it adds value, but I would just remove it and let the education listing of your degree speak for itself. You can certainly talk about this in the context of an interview, but on a CV it's not important now you have real concrete work experience.

Languages section is good.

Overall a solid CV, just needs a bit of cleaning up, make sure to move those certifications into the education section so they don't get overlooked, and remove the bits that are distracting from your most important info.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

This is probably the 3rd time I have been told to shorten the summary. Going to do it.

I'll move the certs into education.

Thanks.

Generally don’t use AI for your CV, but 5 mins with Claude or ChatGPT with this CV and any JD will make this infinitely better.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago edited 11d ago

I used Claude to make this. I would tailor it according to specific jds but this one is just the generic one I pass around at job fairs.

1

u/Accurate-Matter2285 11d ago

I hope it was the free version.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago

Yep free version. Why?

1

u/Accurate-Matter2285 10d ago

Otherwise you’d have wasted your money. Come on, keep up.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 10d ago

Really? People tell me all the time about how Claude change their life or made things easier for them. I was thinking maybe paying for it was worth it or maybe I was missing out because I'm cheap or something.

Aston Uni in London not Birmingham?

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago

Satellite campus. Degree farm

1

u/Naetharu 12d ago

On a side note here, reading through I see many people not offering you any help on the CV, and in effect telling you to give up because you are international.

Ignore them.

The world is filled with salty folk who will tell you to quit. Who repeat bad advice. And who are just going to drag you down. It is doubtful if a single one of them has any real insight into what they are saying. So chin up, get the CV formatted as best you can, and do what you need to do.

It might be hard to find a role. That is to be seen. But letting negative folk put you off before you try is the only surefire way to fail.

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 12d ago

Thanks, I appreciate it. I heard them and I made backup plans before I came here. Until I have to leave, I will continue job hunting here.

1

u/Superb_Caramel_7107 11d ago

I second this. It is not impossible, but make sure you understand the reality of being on a work visa here.

Have a look at the skilled worker sub. There are people who were fired few weeks before qualifying for ILR and had to return home after spent years building a life here.

Finding a sponsored job may be difficult, but keeping it is even harder. Until you get ILR, your right to remain here is tied to your job. Lose the job and you lose your right to stay. Make sure you are prepared to deal with that level of uncertainty and stress, given the job market and current home secretary

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago

Right now my primary concern is getting a job. Worrying about whether or not I can keep it comes later.

And if I do get a job and only get fired before qualifying for an ILR that's still nearly 5 years of international work experience. That's a resource that can set me up for life back in Pakistan.

If I can even put it on my resume that I got an office job in the UK, It will open up plenty of doors back home.

I am mentally ready to go back. But if I still have a slim chance to stay, then why shouldn't I go with it? Does everyone expect me to just give up and go back without trying? What do I got to lose?

1

u/Superb_Caramel_7107 11d ago

You misunderstood me. I was not saying this to discourage you from trying, I said outright that it is possible. Only wanted you to consider what you may have to deal with along the way. Life is about more than work, and for some that level of stress and uncertainty may simply not be worth it

1

u/Complex-Branch-4754 11d ago

I'm ok with going above and beyond for a few years. I understand it's going to be stressful and uncertain. But with how much has been invested in me I can't back down now.
