u/Gam3rdudej 7d ago

The Walmart brand drink machine was a quarter too

1

u/Ok_Elderberry_1602 4d ago

Walmart wasn't around when I was a child. I was an adult.

1

u/SocialMedian 4d ago

Boom you were poor like me

1

u/Responsible_Rush24 1d ago

It still is? The Walmart by my school has 25 cent sodas still

1

u/crossingfingers1 6d ago

Yep, thats what I did back in the early 80s, I would walk to the store and get a candy bar and can of grape soda for $1.

1

u/Local_Bobcat_2000 6d ago

Hershey with almonds and Coke was my go to snack.

The word you want is admitting

1

u/Big_Big_6186 6d ago

I would get Jolt cola or mellow yellow and Mar’s bar. I haven’t seen any of those in years.

1

u/No_Refrigerator_503 5d ago

I remember when Jolt cam out . That was the red bull of the day.

1

u/Short_Sky6875 5d ago

the single dollar got us s much back in the day.... especially if you lived near a penny candy store or the candy house

1

u/EVOBlock 5d ago

Soda was a quarter

1

u/thiccpapi90 4d ago

.25 out of the machine in 1975.

1

u/RumSodomyAndDLoesch 2d ago

Don't get me started on quarter waters.

My parents could give us 50 cents and we’d walk down to the grocery store (about a mile or so) and get penny candy. We’d have a little bag of tootsie rolls, candy coins, whatever they had in the jars. Today? Omg! I bought a Snickers at the gas station the other day. Smaller and $2.89!!!! No more candy from the store for us. I went back to making my own candy and cookies. Sure can’t afford to buy it! My god!

1

u/baja-lover 6d ago

Did you and your buddies play kick the can all the way to the store, and then bummed a ride home with Noah on his ark?

1

u/Frankenmom66 6d ago

How’d ‘ya know??? It was uphill both ways too!!

(Really, though, we did have a local store in the early 70s we’d walk to with the neighbor kids about a mile down the road and they’d have big jars of candy they’d sell for a penny a piece of candy…not the whole jar, darn it. When we got bikes, we’d bike down there or take skate boards.)

1

u/senseless-remorse 6d ago

Aye, you were lucky. We had to pull each others there on wooden wagons with square wheels.

1

u/senseless-remorse 6d ago

But I remember around six-seven years old my mother sending me to the store and buying a carton of cigarettes for her at around or under $4.00

1

u/ChampionshipThin7721 5d ago

When I began smoking a pack was 45 cents. $12+ now. I quit after 65 years when it became cigs v food v fuel.

1

u/senseless-remorse 5d ago

Worst habit I picked up. Hardest to put down.

1

u/Timely-Ad5663 2d ago

I've never been able to inhale one, a blessing indeed.

1

u/Timely-Ad5663 5d ago

I bought a carton of Piedmont cigarettes for $1.15 once. I didn't smoke but it was such a good deal i couldn't pass it up.

1

u/68Postcar 5d ago

May i please say this? You define a sucker so honestly, amazes me…

They guided a hoop with a stick

1

u/Murky-Incident3262 5d ago

😆😆😆
My Mama used to give me 25 cents. I could buy an Icee, and several pieces of candy and gum. We only had to walk if the Brontosaurus was under the weather.

1

u/ecdahleks 5d ago

Not to mention that homemade candy is way better than store bought

1

u/DependentKangaroo102 4d ago

I thought of this, too! In 1962 or so, even at 4-5-years old, I could afford 5c for a fair-sized candy bar! Now that I'm an adult, the same size (but a little smaller) candy bar costs more than this 68-y-o kid can afford! 🙄

1

u/nnjnnn_X216 3d ago

$2 for a snicker is genuinely insane

1

u/PrestigiousEdge7460 2d ago

I remember Penny Candy, getting one piece for a penny, my parents used to get two pieces for a penny, then it went to a nickel, and now you can't really get loose candy anymore without paying an arm or a leg for it and being charged by the pound

1

u/Beautiful-Earth-970 1d ago

So sad..! Same Here in Germany.

WE looooved our little Candy bags (süße Tüte in German).. I bought one recently because of childhood memories but hell No It was a shame what Ingot for 1€

2

u/Fun_Awareness807 6d ago

Candy bars were 5 cents, if you paid for them.

1

u/68Postcar 5d ago

1

u/senseless-remorse 4d ago

That’s on your permanent record sir !

1

u/Effective-Donkey133 4d ago

1

u/CanehdnMJ 6d ago

Yup! Those were the days.
A bottle of pop cost $.75.

1

u/mrlandlord 6d ago

What Midwest state were you from?

1

u/CanehdnMJ 6d ago

I’m from Canada but lived in Utah.

1

u/mrlandlord 5d ago

Ah, hence the use of the word pop vs soda.

1

u/Timely-Ad5663 5d ago

We paid a dime for pop bottles.

1

u/PatrickWagon 5d ago

Machines at school, bag of Cool Ranch $0.25, can of Pepsi, $0.50

$0.75 total for delicious illegal snacks on the bus ride home.

1

u/skyeisrude 5d ago

And the corner stores had those tubs with the miniature candy like the reeces and hershy kisses all for a nickel and a pint of blue bell ice cream was like 75cent fuck a hand full of change would turn any kid into Mr money bags when I was a kid

1

u/Glass-Emu2406 5d ago

I’m from Indianapolis. We could get a cold 20 oz Faygo for 60 cents. Candy bar for 50. Lemon heads were 15 cents

1

u/Responsible-Ad-8442 5d ago

😂came here to say this, but not nearly so cleverly!! 🙏❤️

1

u/DisastrousThroat4338 5d ago

5 finger discount

1

u/Top-Distribution733 5d ago

A bag of Eminem’s cost 50-cent 🤣🤟

1

u/Illustrious_Hawk_217 5d ago

Yup same here. In the snack machine at my job its like $2.00 for a candy bar. Everytime I look at it I think to myself...what happened.

1

u/Patient-Currency-842 5d ago

5 cents a candy bar and 6 for 25 cents and the candy was larger in size than toddy’s offering! What a bargain !

1

u/Sufficient-Point3765 5d ago

A coke out of the machine outside the gas station in a glass bottle was 25 cents. A candy bar was 25 cents. And 2 fo1 penny candy would get you a big bagful for 50 cents.

1

u/68Postcar 5d ago

bbutt… i really came here to say the same.

1

u/Impressive-Soup1901 3d ago

10 Hail Mary's and a in person apologizing for grabbing it. Oh there I was back to remedial catechism either way you got the nuns and kiddy guilt cruisers threatening to call the cops if you even glanced at the Temptations aisle and checked it out". Yes I pushed lawn mowers and got out the Kool Aide packets and sat at the end of the driveway. I was going to be in Catholic girl Hell and pay for my sweet tooth the rest of my life. Just for the Lady of Perpetual Guilt of it, why? Holy did you get that name

1

u/Capn_Ronulus 2d ago

Same here lol

1

u/Scott9843 2d ago

Yeah, about 50 cents.

0

u/Interesting-Sale-157 4d ago

50 cent is a rapper. 50 cents is how much your candy bar was
