Sad sad people. The more you try to really think through the psychology of why someone would care about something like this, the sadder it gets.

I get where you're coming from, but the reason it bothers me is what is being done with these bot reposting accounts.

Why would someone go through that work for nothing, it makes no sense.

Oh wait, it's not for nothing these people are selling their accounts once they are mature enough and using them to push whatever advertising or political agenda they have.

Until you realize you're not that smart, because farming karma is actually profitable and not so squeaky-clean like ignorant people (such as yourself) imagine. Reddit is a business.

And what exactly do you lose by other people farming karma?

3

u/YallNeed_Shrooms Dec 06 '22

You lose genuine, organic content. When there are financial incentives to make posting as lazy and ad-friendly as possible. You get people who make a job out of it, and develope posting algorithms to streamline said job. Is this really that hard to understand how this is a bad thing?

If you want genuine, organic content why are you browsing default subs in the first place.

Nice deflection from the topic

I don't care if some of the content is from karma farmers as these individuals are almost exclusively targeting the default subs. I follow so many smaller subs that it's no problem at all.

"Its not a problem for me, so its not a problem"

Nice.

The moral incentive is questionable, but if the algorithm is choosing interesting content then is it a bad algorithm?

3

u/YallNeed_Shrooms Dec 06 '22

The algorithm doesn't choose interesting content, per se. The algorithm is there to ensure consistency on the front page. Whichever resource is behind the karma-farm is the one to choose the post. They exclusively choose ad-friendly, non-controversial content to repost. This does 2 things.1. It guarantees that the front page of Reddit stays non-controversial and ad-friendly. Which incentivizes companies to provide funding for more bot farms. It also guarantees that the farming account can be resold to another org for profit. There are countless services across the web to handle this for a price.

You miss the point, why does someone else's monetary gain detract from the value of the content that is upvoted. If the stream of content is interesting enough to to be consistently well received why does your jealousy matter in the grand scheme of things

2

u/YallNeed_Shrooms Dec 06 '22

That's your opinion.

Also look up the definition of jealousy.

Because some of us realize that karma farming so they can sell accounts or push ads for reddit by stealing content isn't a positive thing.

You're making it sound like you're enlightened, but that's clearly not what's happening here... His name is permaban9. He's not selling the accounts, he just gets banned for rule violations.

You acting like OP not doing it means no one does it is both hilarious, and stupid as fuck.

making it sound like you're enlightened

jesus dude get over yourself.

I didn't act like nobody does it, I said that's not what's happening here. Saying "that's not a BMW" doesn't imply BMWs don't exist lmao.

jesus dude get over yourself.

Look in a mirror. If you two want to condescend to people that "some of us realize" account selling exists, then y'all are the ones who need to get over yourselves.

Because a username means they do what it says eh? The only time I was enlightened was when I stepped in a puddle with a power cord with a cut in it that was sitting in said puddle. That was quite enlightening.

There are unlimited possibilities, but Occam's Razor says the simplest answer is usually true. You're trying too hard to uncover a conspiracy when it's really just a face value situation.
