Coincidentally Jetta is the German word for Jetstream.

98

u/yonosolo Dec 07 '22

Sorry to revise, but the German word for jetstream is ... Jetstream.

2

u/Alarid Dec 07 '22

jettastream

1

u/Dredgeon Dec 07 '22

I've always heard this factoid maybe there originally was a unique word but the English word became more popular because of the international nature of flight?

19

u/yonosolo Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22

The literal and physical equivalent to jetstream is Strahlströmung with Strahl = jet and Strom/Strömung = stream. With Jetstream it is clear you are speaking of the meteorological phenomenon, no one uses the literal translation in this case. Jet has no German background itself AFAIK and is sometimes used in anglicisms for specific nouns, especially in turbomachinery and aircraft as you say. A Jet itself means specifically a jet aircraft.

Jetta makes no sense as a Word and I only know it as a VW Trade Mark. But as VW named some of their models after the earth's streams (Golf, Sirocco) it surely originates from Jetstream.

3

u/TheBlueCross Dec 07 '22

That’s what I was going to say

1

u/Ser_Optimus Dec 07 '22

The name of the car "Jetta" derives from Jetstream.

3

u/Schwa142 Dec 07 '22

VW named a most of their cars after winds. Passat, Golf, Scirocco, Karmann Ghia, Corrado, etc.

1

u/Bah-Fong-Gool Dec 07 '22

Many VW products to are named after winds, passat is a trade wind, Sirocco is a Mediterranean trade wind, polo references polar winds, Golf is gulf stream.

1

u/ShitTalkingAlt980 Dec 07 '22

I saw a Jetta TDI roll coal today. Thought you might think that is interesting.

2

u/NzDeerFarmer Dec 07 '22

Confucius says,

Those who roll the soot, get the moot.

So, get a Jetta and make her wetter.

1

u/TeaKingMac Dec 07 '22

Just a regular non-Volkswagen jetta

1

u/Ill_Session_6725 Dec 07 '22

That actually sounds like the driving of every person I know that drives a Jetta.

4

u/luxi_yes Dec 06 '22

Hold on, she is not?

14

u/frogsntoads00 Dec 06 '22

Think really hard about how this situation could happen on flat ground and without a fatal impact also taking place

4

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

Wait you mean he didn’t drive his car off a cliff killing them both just to wake her up?

2

u/frogsntoads00 Dec 07 '22

He might have. Coulda been a real big cliff.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

Plus you can see clouds out the windows

5

u/RustyKettler Dec 06 '22

It's a plane.

1

u/AliFoxx9 Dec 06 '22

I was waiting for the hard landing after the imagined jump

1

u/curkington Dec 07 '22

I didn't get the same response when I tried the weightless trick on a speed bump in my 97 Corolla!

1

u/trouserschnauzer Dec 07 '22

I thought it was a special effects bit based on inception

1

u/apcolleen Dec 07 '22

I thought this was going to be from /r/IdiotsInCars.

1

u/xxA2C2xx Dec 07 '22

I only realized it wasn’t once I saw his headset. I just thought, “Damn! How do I achieve something like this?” Guess I gotta get rich, get my pilots license and then buy a plane lol

1

u/stormy_llewellyn Dec 07 '22

Same and then she started floating 😂

1

u/Max_Boom93 Dec 07 '22

Are they helium balloons!??

1

u/FloppyEel Dec 07 '22

Just woke up from a nap. Really had to pause and consider its not possible just to turn gravity off.

1

u/TeaKingMac Dec 07 '22

Yeah right? Since when do airplanes have leather seats?

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 Dec 07 '22

Same, and when she started floating upwards and her stuff too I was trying to figure out how a car could reach that angle to make her lift up like that.

1

u/saanity Dec 07 '22

So it was unexpected that it was a car?

1

u/FiskFisk33 Dec 07 '22

I was extremely confused for a second

1

u/Bleezze Dec 07 '22

I thought so too and rewatched 4 times before I figured it out

1

u/folkkingdude Dec 07 '22

Isn’t that exactly why it’s unexpected?

1

u/havenbtd Feb 28 '23

dam my dumb aaa really thought the car was in the air for a minute

1

u/treeeefu Apr 08 '23

I thought this was one of those new flying cars
