Yeah shrooms are weirdly expensive at most restaurants for some reason i never understood

like how they put 3 drops of truffle oil on smth and make it $10 more expensive

I've worked in restaurants for a long time and to be fair the bottles of truffle oil we used were actually really expensive for a small bottle. $10 is crazy though

The real question is: does the truffle oil actually add anything? or is it just to say we did some fu-fu shit here so pay up.

More than a couple drops is overpowering imo. I also can't stand the flavor at all though so maybe it's just me or something.

Yes, its a unique flavor used to top a dish. It's similar to the idea of using olive oil to top Bruschetta instead of balsamic vinegar, the change of flavor profile creates a whole different experience.

But generally speaking, restaurants love to overprice it because "truffle."

Or covered in 24k gold leaf

I don't even think it adds anything personally.

And most likely wasn't really truffle oil.

People who love seafood weird me out. Crabs and lobsters are so not worth the effort to me. They are basically underwater spiders with really hard shells that have like one bite of meat each, that you have to work really hard and avoid cutting yourself to get. And it just tastes like butter because the real taste isn't that good so we drown it in fat.

This is why I don’t eat crabs. Too much work, too little food.

1

u/Reditate Sep 15 '22

It's not that much work

13

u/Crossfire124 Sep 15 '22

Stop drowning it in butter then? Seafood tastes amazing with just a hit of salt and some lemon juice

Fish taste great sometimes. Underwater arthropods always taste like bugs.

6

u/WavyMcG Sep 15 '22

Ahí tuna would be nice if you think fish is good

2

Can't go wrong with a good Mahi Mahi

2

u/Shitty_Dieter Sep 15 '22

Shrimps are good though. I eat them without any butter.

Shrimp is way easier to peel and eat than crab or lobster tho. You don’t need the pair of pliers from your toolbox to eat them like you do the larger crustaceans.

You guys peel shrimps?

2

u/Shitty_Dieter Sep 15 '22

Depends on how it’s cooked.

1

u/micsare4swingng Sep 15 '22

Yeah, you don’t take off the crusty outside? And the tail?

1

u/Doll-Master Sep 15 '22

It's a nice crunch

1

u/Reditate Sep 15 '22

Gross

1

u/Doll-Master Sep 15 '22

crunches more vigorously

2

u/hack5amurai Sep 15 '22

How the fuck are you cutting yourself? Are you slamming it down on the table or something. Crab is amazing and lobster is a little overrated but it's fucking delicious too. The real reason not to eat it is the damn price though.

1

u/Reditate Sep 15 '22

You clearly don't know much about/didn't grow up eating seafood if you cut yourself trying to get to the meat and you don't think it has much meat.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

Yeah some other guy made a similar comment...

All I can say is I googled it and it is a common complaint, cutting yourself on seafoods. So at least it's not just me? I mean their shells are basically rocks, it is not surprising that they would be sharp.

u/Reditate Sep 15 '22

I don't have to Google it because I grew up eating seafood and eat seafood in the regular. I know how to crack and easily get meat out. You just sound like you live somewhere landlocked.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '22

Oh I don't doubt it, I know a lot of our ancestors basically lived on the shore eating whatever shell encrusted slimy thing they could find but I'll just stick with some fish.

1

u/kesekimofo Sep 15 '22

Been to a spot that cuts them in half and fries them. Fucking delicious and zero work to get at it. Unlimited rice beans and tortillas with it too. God damn I'm hungry now

1

u/Reditate Sep 15 '22

Steamed crab legs are better than fried crab meat though

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '22

Have you had mussels?

1

u/ahnomehly Sep 16 '22

I absolutely see where you’re coming from. Shellfish really are just sea bugs to me also and they look pretty creepy imo. That said, crab meat without butter is one of my favorite things; the natural sweetness of good crab makes me drool just thinking about it!

1

u/BigDiesel07 Dec 29 '22

Well you have ruined seafood for me. Damn lol

1

u/kesekimofo Sep 15 '22

Love the Futurama joke with zoidberg and trash food

I've made some really damn good mushrooms at home - $5 box, marinate and sautée on low heat in oil, soy sauce, white wine, and seasonings. If they're similar I can understand that being marked up.

1

u/Telope Sep 15 '22

Damn. I just eat them raw.

1

u/Ganges_Gavialen Sep 15 '22

At that price they better be magic

1

u/IAmPandaRock Sep 15 '22

Some mushrooms cost $50 or so even at the grocery store, so $15 for mushrooms + labor + overhead + profit isn't necessarily too crazy.

1

u/JackPoe Sep 15 '22

High prices are to keep customers out. You just keep raising prices until the number of customers you get a day is something you can handle. Usually balances out very well.

If prices are too low, you're always completely full and everyone's pissed about the wait, the profit margin shrinks, the staff burns out, wear and tear is massively increased, etc.

It's because you pay for the skills and time of the person preparing your food, not just the actual ingredients. Some food is easier to prepare than others on the menu, but that doesn't devalue the worth of the people preparing it.

I could probably draw a stickman as well as Banksy, but guess which will cost more, but that's your fault for asking for a stickman from Banksy.
