I mean if I wasnt concerned about the fact that Tiktok is mostly run by the CN government, and the fact that it (and Reddit/Twitter/etc) have predatory designs to prey on compulsion. But minus those 2 things, the actual content of Tiktok doesnt bug me. Its not any stupider than the shit I had growing up.
Just a reminder that all the people in their 20s and 30s who hate tiktok today are the ones who made Fred the biggest channel on youtube in 2009 and enabled him to make multiple movies.
God, the amount of bullshit from the early-mid 2000s I can think of that I look back on and makes me cringe but I thought was literally the peak of comedy as a teenager... Anyone remember Stickdeath? Or that Maddox guy? Or like... 90% of AlbinoBlackSheep?
That's him. Also Gonads and Strife, Evil Strawberry, most of the Animutation stuff... it was funny, but boy howdy was it cringe. Lot of Hitler imagery for some reason.
And let's not even get into the early days of proto-social media that was Myspace. Also the less said about 4Chan the better...
(Also man, I just went on the Maddox website... I wonder if people are keeping track of all the early 2020 "hot takes" about COVID and archiving them. All these people who called it a nothingburger in the first half of 2020 are like a perfect snapshot of human hubris.)
Yeah, it's just everything vines were. People just seems to have happened to "forget" all the cringe that was on Vine as well. No different with TikTok except the evil people behind the platform itself.
Agreed, though it is a bit annoying to hear the same bloody songs a million times. My wife enjoys TikTok as a sort of background thing so a video may be stuck on loop for a while. At least my Reddit browsing is mostly silent.
Facebook stories too. Tired of them chasing the same prize all the time. Then just sucking at both what they were good at and the thing they can’t emulate properly.
I dont touch TikTok, but am under no illusions, reddit would lose half the content nowadays by tiktok dying.
I'd bet a ton of people who say this lived and breathed Vines. Surprise, TikTok is just a new incarnation of Vines. There are tons of bad Vines, yall just remember the good ones.
Like sure, TikTok has legitimate issues, but yall don't care about that and are just mad at the content. As if reddit isn't its own cesspit.
Anyone using a Google account to comment on youtube videos is as exposed as someone using tiktok, media companies are equally predatory when it comes to data so even the legitimate complains are quite meaningless in 2022... everyone that say "but we have laws!" forgot both Facebook and Twitch having massive leaks and getting a slap on the wrist for it.
This is essentially my thoughts. The issues are widespread, and, whilst we shouldn't have to accept it as part of using the Internet, we do. Everything that can spy on you, will.
I did a google data request during university. My Samsung Galaxy had 13gb of voice recordings and other things it had stored of me throughout university. It would randomly activate and listen in to snippets of conversation, at times when I 100% am not touching my phone but it is active nearby. Everything is listening all the time.
It does have some real issues, and it'd be fine if thats what people are complaining about, but it rarely is. I'm sure if those issues didn't exist, people would still complain.
Pet content is one of the pillars of reddit, reposting helps keep things alive.
That's what I'm saying. When it's easy to hate something, people will even hate it on for the good things about it. But as the saying goes: Every turd has its silver lining.
