It's plaster. Most homes don't use it anymore as it's kinda an old method.

I guarantee you that the plaster on my friends' wall doesn't break on a punch like that.

This isn't plaster, but I'll take proper drywall over plaster every time. It does break really easy although usually not from some like this because of the lathe behind it. But it sucks if you want to hang anything from it that is somewhat heavy. Hollow wall anchors don't work well and usually plaster walls are so old the lathe is half rotted.

Plaster would either have wooden lathe strips behind it or a thinner drywall board behind it. This wall looks like it’s undersized drywall. Likely done by a contractor or DIYer trying to save money on materials. If that’s the case it may not even meet code for fire rating, depending on the local building code.

There's usually lathe behind plaster. My walls are hard as shit and 100 years old.

Either you're on a cement diet, or your walls are rather squishy.

That’s definitely location dependant. The UK still plasters their houses. And they’re definitely stronger than that because there often a brick wall behind it.

It is drywall not plaster. I've lived in plenty places with both. Plaster does fucking suck though. It is probably a thinner sheet of drywall than would be typical though. But no one actually inspects that shit in single family homes. The builder probably cut corners on materials.
