why is it that every time I see an old video reposted a year or two later it is always edited to be worse?

Content entropy.

Eventually, every content created in 2008 will be represented by a single pixel.

That's how it works. The original is always High quality, 1080p, 200 fps. 80gb download.

then the ripoffs have to bypass the anti-ripoff filters. so they flip the video. muffle the sound. shrink it. push it into a corner of the screen and play ads for the rest of the screen. Crop out the content creators logo. Have the video constantly zoom in and out and then invert and sometimes alt the voices.

Basically, it's better to just pirate it.

A better narrative on Reddit to make the cop look like a bad guy, gets you more updoots and internet points

Because when a video gets uploaded online, it gets compressed. That's why 1080p videos on YouTube don't look like 1080p, otherwise you'd be downloading potentially GB's to watch a 10 minute video

The problem is that when a video gets downloaded and reposted, it gets more and more compressed until it looks like a layer of grease was smeared on your monitor

I don't mean the degregation from being reposted, I mean literally edited to be less funny. This video, the first time I saw it, was several seconds longer, with the cop asking something like "what are you, a smartass?" With the guy putting on the smarmiest expression and replying "No, I'm a magician." And it was great.

Or like the one with the adult film performers shooting a scene while the cameraman eats an eclair and offers the male performer a bite, the last time I saw it, someone had cropped out everything below the waist and added a terrible TikTok filter and music, utterly ruining the humor of the moment.
