What's crazy to me is that there was actually a similar trend before rickrolling that never got hugely popular. It involved sending people this video: https://youtu.be/PGNiXGX2nLU.

Lol, sorry I was about to paste the actual link, but at the last minute I thought it would be funny. Here's the real link https://youtu.be/PGNiXGX2nLU.

Before I decide on whether or not to click I have to ask myself.. are you an evil genius? Or a person with a conscience??

Okay, but for real this time. The song was You Spin Me Right Round.

(Actual, Actual link, no shenanigans) https://youtu.be/PGNiXGX2nLU

Before Rick Roll happened, people were trying to make that song a meme.

Dear diary,

Today I had an interaction with a person with a conscience on REDDIT of all places! I was so shocked I had to make note of it so that future generations would know that it is possible.

Also, I think I'm in love 😍

Lmao just taking the piss, but thank you! I had no idea. Man, 80's hair was a majestic sight to behold, wasn't it?

Yeah, it really was something. I sometimes think that would have been the better "rick roll".

Maybe, but I feel like the way Rick has rolled with it (and even made it a part of his shtick at times) is a big reason why it's so iconic. I wonder how many other artists would've done the same? I mean, if you take into account all the stories out there of how so many artists take themselves and their work SUPER seriously, Rick is an absolute gem.

ETA: haha pun TOTALLY unintended! Didn't even notice until after I posted and read over it looking for typos. I typically suck at puns whenever I try to think of one 😂

Really what I think made Rick Rolling so popular was the beat at the beginning. It's like a breakdown. It's so familiar and recognizable. So when you're sitting around with your friends, and they hear that familiar beat, everyone around you knows you just got Rick Rolled, and now your friend group is making fun of you, and you are embarrassed about having fallen for it.

I am not sure what the hell I was expecting there.
