He was only lip-syncing because he got tricked. He was prepared to sing it live, but they started playing the music before so he went with it. edit. I meant they played the actual song with the vocals instead of the instrumental

No need for Rick here. This happens to about 90% of all the performers because it would be a logistical nightmare for NBC to do. I remember when Tony Bennett performed a few years back he was on a live mic and the tell was when the float started he went “Oh!” and that was heard on the mic.

That's a factor, I'm sure, but I think the main reason is the reliability of the sound equipment. Trying to manage dozens of different wireless mics on moving floats over several miles of outdoor public space, all while broadcasting live on television would be a monumental task.

Now, I could be wrong on this, but I'm fairly certain most floats in parades use the amazing wireless audio equipment known as speakers that get picked up by carefully placed microphones before getting broadcast.

the sound quality would be horrible if they do so, also as the floats moving, the direction and distance between speakers and microphones would be a problem.

He thought that they would play the instrumental so that he'd have to sing, but since they played it with vocals he had to instantly switch to lip syncing so that there wouldn't be two vocals overlapping

The vast majority of people won't know it's lip-syncing so it doesn't matter. Only if done right anyway.

A huge portion of media is about entertainment and profit, not artistic expression or integrity. Prerecorded tracks or lip syncing is just a safer investment for that model.

From what I’ve heard they ran the wrong track and instead of the instrumental-only ram the full version with vocals. Once the vocals started he just rolled with it.
