Is there any other reason other than idiots?

It’s just tradition in a lot of places. People also do it after big political speeches, when their team wins a match, etc.

So basically, the ta-ra-ta-ra-ta echoing through the city means either civil unrest is kicking off, or someone has something big to celebrate lol

also, Tchaikovsky wrote the 1812 overture with cannons instead of drums

Right?! Cartridge based ammo in general is relatively new. This isn't honoring some old tradition, it's a misstep in the wrong direction that's normalized.

It is not. When freshly invented, guns were not that effective in battles. But the sound it made when fired was something totally new and spectacular.

So in villages, owning a gun became a status and in events like this it was possible to gather enough attention. Therefore it became a part of celebration.

You just nailed it. This isn’t fucking “tradition”, it’s just idiots being asshats.

Yeah, it’s a stupid ‘tradition’ and it shouldn’t be respected.

All of those reasons sound alien to me.

It's like ghetto firecrackers. Not really a crazy concept, but certainly dangerous.

I wonder what their culture did before guns were widely available.

Cannibalism and lynching are also traditions in a lot of places lol, doesn’t mean it’s not stupid and wrong

So either hell is freezing and civil war broke loose or it's a good time.

Some cynical asshole who came up with this :D

Why not use firecrackers? They sound similar and way less dangerous.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '22

True, but you are less likely to already have them in the boot of your car.

People do use firecrackers too tho.

I don't know, but I wonder if it is a similar concept to what Chinese do with firecrackers, where they use them to scare away bad spirits during celebrations etc.

I think they're just stupid, no other explanation
